VP2...beginner's question

After much debate with myself [and keeping myself pre-occupied until my Wii day happens] I've decided to convert to something called Valkyrie Profile 2.
Now...I've never been a huge tri-ace fan or much of square one since they became "squee-nix" but i was wondering if someone could tell me what's in store for me with this game.  Granted i have played a bit of the 1st but never truly brought myself to finish it.  Like is it more or less the 1st one in 3d or something entirely diffrent?

my only complaint is that i got a bum copy with no manual.
the game itself however looks BEAUTIFUL.  I'm actually having a lot more fun fighting this time around than i remember the 1st one [maybe its the illusion of "3d" that doesnt make it seem so tame]  I think I'm going to take some time off to earn some of my money back and maybe level up someone to release them soon.  The battle system's a bit of a chalange to get used to but i think im getting there...Neibelung Valestie has never looked sooo good...i hope there's more candy for the eyes.
