Ratix -> Roddick
Dorn -> Dorne
Iria -> Ilia
Ronixis -> Ronyx
Cius -> Cyuss

It's like most of these were changed for the sake of being changed and nothing else. I normally don't have much objections to name changes when they make sense in the target language, but, I mean...seriously, Roddick? Looks like a typo for Riddick. What was wrong with Cius? Iria/Ilia could go either way (but I'm partial to Iria more, and it gets more hits on google anyway). Dorne? Fine. Ronyx is more like his nickname, so *shrug*.

It looks like they are just correcting engrish translation errors that happened in the original translation (Iria to Ilia being the most obvious correction) Not really sure though. That would probably be the only reason to change the names like that. It's what they did with the re-translation of Final fantasy tactics. When you're dealing with games translated in the 90's, what you think the names "should" be may not actually be what they should be. I seriously think that in the 90's all the editors mysteriously went missing.

EDIT: OMG! I just remembered this game didn't receive an official english translation. Still where are you getting the other names from?

Old legacy translations from material using romanizations and also Star Ocean - The Second Story, which at least featured Ronixis (Claude C. Kenny's father).   Then there's ofcourse Star Ocean (SFC)'s fan translation.

Wouldn't surprise me if this is another case of Dracula X Chronicles, where the Symphony of the Night re-translation was hilariously awkward. They're probably giving Star Ocean PSP the same type of "rewording" treatment towards the old fan-translation.

cyuss? what the hell are they smoking?

roddick isn't much better. honestly, i would have just gone with ratix, or ratiks, or something. it's a bit awkward due to sort-of similarities to other words (radditz, radix, ratings, latex, rat), but not enough to really warrant a namechange.

I'm pretty sure you can change the names of the characters anyway so its not such a big deal. The Ronixis change is very trivial though considered the fact he plays a role in SO2.

 I got the game today and there are quite a few more. Of course Planet Stream became Planet Styx to match TTEOT and Fear became Fhia. Also the spelling of towns have been changed a bit as far as the fan translation went. They are no longer hot and cool.

Seems good so far though. The cutscenes will still call you by the original names btu that's an eh. The only issues I have so far is maybe the text being a little small in the text boxes. No subtitles for the opening song which is japanese but subs for all the english cutscenes that you can't turn off and finally the sprites seem small on certain maps yet when they enlarge them for ingame cutscenes their appears to be no real high resolution sprite for those.

The funny thing is that the Eternal Sphere site uses the "old" names + identical romanizations/translations to what's found in the old DeJap translation.

It really reeks like First Departure got the SotN "re-translation" treatment.

Oh and Joshua became Ioshua which was weird. The all caps names in the text boxes annoy me a bit and the odd I always being lowercase in the battle screen. It just looks wrong. Plus the generic no resizing textboxes made for 3 lines of small text are a bit weird but not too bothersome.

I've played a bit. I haven't played the original in ten years (never played the DeJap patch, only in Japanese with the old Ian Kelley FAQs), but it's pretty much exactly what I wanted after playing SO2 nine years ago-- SO1 remade just reusing SO2's engine. Yes, it plays and feels EXACTLY like the same game as SO2, just modded into SO1.

The voice acting isn't amazing, but it's fairly decent. It's a huuuuge improvement over SO2's (lol), at any rate. Some lines have some really odd delivery though.

There are a few enhancements to the battle system (vs. SO2 PS1) I've noticed:

1) Can do a three-hit combo with regular attacks before needing to recover for the next attack (at least with Roddick/Ratix, dunno about anyone else). Can't link to special attacks like Tales though. Tongue

2) Targeting button in Semi-Auto control mode. Semi-Auto in SO2 PSX made you confirm your target every single time you attack, doubling the number of button presses. Targeting button lets you select the enemy you want to attack, and it locks to that enemy, so no need to reconfirm your target. As an added plus, the battle now pauses when selecting targets, like it does in Tales.

3) Pressing the targeting button while running toward/chasing an enemy will cancel the attack! I'm sure the people who hated chasing those spinning witches in SO2 will really like this.

Stuff I'm iffy on-

1) The number one thing that still makes this battle system feel incredibly antiquated is still intact--The SLOOWWWW battle speed. They really should have sped it up. I need bunny shoes or something.

2) Real world map. The developers stated in an interview years ago that they wanted to implement a normal world map in SO1 but weren't able to for whatever reason. So they just used the "dungeon map" engine to handle it. But actually, I think the "dungeon map" engine was better... it was so much more intricately detailed. This just uses the same generic, uninteresting world map used in SO2. Towns are just a hop, skip, and a jump apart. I'd also say that the open world map doesn't really work all that well with SO1's world map, either. There are only three continents, two very small ones and one huge one. No islands or anything.

3) The new character designs. They're so simple and generic looking. I'm slowly getting used to them, but I still don't really understand the reason why they made all the Fellpool people look less like cat people and more like humans with tails and elf ears. One thing that sort of bothers me is that Millie's sprite looks an edit of Rena's; the head looks exactly the same, except with a different hair style.

Ratix Farrence -> Roddick Farrence
Dorn Marto -> Dorne Murtough
Milly Kiliet -> Millie Chliette
Ronixis J. Kenny -> Ronyx J. Kenny
Iria Silvestoli -> Ilia Silvestri
Fear Mell -> Phia Melle
Ashlay Barnbelt -> Ashlay Bernbeldt
Cius Warren -> Cyuss Warren
Marvel Frozen -> Mavelle Froesson
Joshua Jerand -> Ioshua Jerand
Perisie -> Pericci
Tinek Arukena -> T’nique Arcana

I think the only name change I actually like is Marvel's.  Roddick just sounds so.... ew XD;;;  And everyone else's was pretty pointless.  Not that I was really fond of the character remakes in the first place >_>  I'm hoping they don't go doing something weird with the SO2 characters' names...

Except Ioshua actually makes sense.  It matches the original Japanese pronunciation (yoshua), and is almost certainly Latin in origin.  There is no 'j' in Latin, just a consonantal 'i', which is frequently written as a 'j' in modern texts.  By writing it as Ioshua, no one is likely to mistake it for the English name Joshua, which it most definitely isn't.

So names are downgraded to some non-existing versions so English speakers can speak it out the original way? That's cute...

Does anyone else think that Roddick's armor looks a LOT like Cless from ToP? I mean not the huge belt thing but it has similar features including the cape. He looks like a badass dont get me wrong it just feels like im playing a Tales game even more than the original. It has I G production for the animation, and the original battle designers made the battle system for ToP as well. Its just really close the the Tales world, which is fine with me. Ok im ranting now, just commenting on his armor

The SO1 remake was done by TOSE, none of its original staff was involved (plenty of it aren't at tri-Ace anymore either) so there isn't any link to ToP staff wise anymore.
