Started this yesterday, and...
And I the only one that kinda dislikes the SO1 remake? sure it has a bigger resolution going on... but it's static, when I enter areas/cities with water, as in... rivers... the rivers are static, they don't even sparkle, the scenarios are not as beautiful... I mean it looks like a remake patched together in some isometric point of view... I prefer the original one.
(am I the only one?)

You're not alone there. While I haven't personally played the remake, I have watched a family member play their copy of the game, and I just couldn't get into the new look. Maybe I'm just overly nostalgic for the SFC version, but I preferred the aesthetics of it much more than I did the PSP remake, especially in regards to the scenery.

Glad to know I'm not alone.
Basically I've know Tri-Ace for so long and know they're tech whores, static water? I mean... that's not up to most developers standards, let alone theirs of all things; they wouldn't even do that on the SNES.
Then the whole scenery also looks kinda bland in comparison with the original, I don't really like the isometric compared to the "angle" the original used and ; oh, and the character names were changed for no good reason, and while renaming them I can't use lower case letters. That coupled with the new world map with PSone-era 3D graphics when the original one had us roaming in places outside of town, as detailed as the town make this seem not entirely a upgrade. I mean if they were doing the worldmap from the ground they could have done a little better than Tales of Eternia Worldmap.
I'll still play it to the end, since I bought it, but I was expecting more.

Yeah I liked the new charter portraits for talking and the battle system tweaks but the world map is kinda meh. I actually flat out stopped playing it where I'm supposed to be going into the netherworld. But I have vacation away from technology to finish it.
2 is good though I can't seem to fight the bandits in that in the city before you get to go to lacquer. I can't remember how. However other than the chibi look for Rena I think it stays true to the roots without some fixes to combat.

Old quoting in action here now, but I guess you might've seen (read) some of the "not so nice" things I've said about it in the past
Anyway, yeah, Star Ocean - First Departure isn't exactly high on my list of remakes I've enjoyed.
(And I've got issues with certain aspects of Second Evolution too)

I love the fact that they even upped her age to 18 in the English version of Second Evolution (in the JP + Second Story she's 17), besides, although Ronyx doesn't care much about looks, I hear Claude C. Kenni's
other
father, Ronixis, has a bit of a problem with this loli affair. (Yeah. I'm one of those who's a bit mixed about some of the name "changes", although some were okay, I'd say most of them weren't necessary and were kinda like the Symphony of the Night retranslation... just heavily rewritten for the sake of just rewriting, 'cause if it carried similarities to the original/legacy translations;
it'd be bad
, by default...)

Want to hear something weird I read? I read sometime when Star Ocean 4 was being released earlier this year, that the producer of Star Ocean, in all honesty, wants to make a hentai game. He even said he asked about doing it and was met with a stern, "No, and don't ever think about it again!"
Maybe that say something about Rena's age going up by one and looking very loli? Hmm...
(I would link the site that mentioned it but the site I found it at was potentially NSFW. San-something Complex or whatever?)

Yeah Tri-Ace doing a hentai game would just be wrong even more so if they decided set it into the Star Ocean universe.
But I think that would make the designs go in the other direction more mature and sexual not more kid like unless he has an unhealthy obsession there.

I agree, I particularly hated Joshua becoming Ioshua.

It was always like that though, look at Star Ocean EX.

That's very true the art for the psp looks similar to the anime for star ocean two. I only watched some of the first episode but she is very loli in there.
EDIT never mind I double checked the anime art and she still looks a lot younger in the psp art.

She has Estelle's voice too, I think.
Star Ocean 1 PSP is really, really broken. Once you hit Ionis and have access to all those base items for creation, you can sit there and manufacture crap for ages. Iron is so cheap that you can simply mass-produce expensive gems and still turn a profit. The "success up" items you get from Machinist are also worth a fair amount (over 100k). I wasn't even TRYING and I now have over a million Fol.
You can't really get that far ahead of yourself in terms of weapons (in some cases, anyway), but you can make all the best armor and accessories.
Wasn't Mavelle's original name "Marvel Frozen"? I can see why they changed that. Marvel Frozen is the name of a character in Aura Battler Dunbine (a mecha anime from 1983).

Indeed. I dropped it in favor of Star Ocean SNES, what a horrible "remake", doesn't Square-Enix have any "quality-control" going on?

Uh, I recall SO1 (the original) being known for being insanely exploitable early on as well. So is SO2, for that matter.
Anyway, for me, SO2 engine >>> SO1 engine, so I'll take First Departure.

Ive been considering buying one of the SO remakes ever since I got back on SO3 these past few weeks. The comments ive read so far are kinda mixed in opinions, so point blank...which remake is better?? I havent played either of the originals, and both remakes look pretty good, so any suggestions??
