...both listed with a release date of Sept. 30th.

Please SO2, have a brand new localization. VP1's was adequate enough to leave intact for the PSP port, but SO2's was a total trainwreck. Surely, if Square can retranslate FFIV three times, surely they can do it once for SO2...

It is not the same, cause Voice Actors are different from just text, though I do think they SHOULD kill whoever did claudes VA (COME HERE BARNEY!)

well, they retranslated FFT, and that game had a MUCH better PS1 localization than SO2 did (sadly enough).

I'm not sure I really understand what's going on in this thread, the voice actors weren't the only problem. SO2 had one of the most bone-dry literal translations I've ever seen in a video game.

But really, the old voice acting was so bad that it was good. But I guess FFT's text translation falls under the same thing...

I guess so.. But the VAs in SO2 are the most disturbing IMO

no, no. FFT's translation was mostly decent, just sounding a bit stilted in a japanese sort of way. well, and there were a bunch of flubs, like, say, the dragon skill "fire bracelet". but there were also a bunch of cool-sounding and memorable lines and whatnot.

SO2's translation was just plain bad, bad, bad. and the voice acting isn't so bad it's good, it's so bad it's terribly, gut-wrenchingly horrendous. i don't understand how this is possible... they could have hired, say, *me* to do all the voices, including the female characters, and it probably would have been miles better... and i'm just some random schmoe with no voice acting experience whatsoever. it just happens to be funny sometimes, which is its only saving grace.

SO1 FTW! Grin
Except it isn't as much played as SO2. No-one talks about SO1 and everyone doesn't like SO3 from what I can tell. Why? Cry
I loved both of those games

Much better, but harder to read.

Any who, I'm just looking forward to the game.

I have to hand it to both of these games honestly...

I finished Star Ocean First Departure in 2 days. I couldn't stop, so addicted!!!

And the voice of Ronyx IS awesome. And Ioshua!! Freaking awesome...

Now I am on Star Ocean Second Evolution, and there's just this "thing" about it that I can't really put my finger on. It might be that you are the alien coming to the planet this time, rather than the reverse (well you can choose the reverse as well but I prefer Claude and Leon over Rena and Dias).

The voice acting is slightly less enjoyable in Second Evolution as well... emotionless expressions (which exists in First Departure as well, but not at the same extent). Sooooo much more dialogue (though I haven't played very far but compared to the first at this point... much more).

Overall they are both very good, but First Departure is better.

You are going to start all kinds of fights with that opinion. I honestly haven't got into one as much as 2 pulled me in.  I do like going with the Rena and Dias angle though and Dias is just badass.

Not intended to start a fight I might as well say. The Second Evolution is really good too. And it isn't an opinion, there's just this invisible thing that I can't grasp or fully understand about the 2nd. As I mentioned, there's just this "thing". And yes, Dias is bad-ass. But so is Leon ^^ (not personality wise though)

I was pulled into the 2nd when it came for the PSX, I couldn't stop playing. And now that I've finished the 1st (which I think is much better even though the lack of an airship) it went above my previous "liking" of the 2nd. That might actually be the invisible "thing". Previously I valued the 2nd very high, but now I value the 1st higher.

It might also be that the 1st is a classic (and I have always valued the classics higher than the newer ones), it might even be that the 2nd is just what it is: The 2nd. Now thinking about it again, I don't really know what that "thing" really is. It simply just is as it stands, I think the 1st is better. And I don't want to have a fight about it :p

Nonetheless, which characters did you play as in both games then?

1st:
Roddick, Cyuss, Ilia, Ioshua

2nd:
Claude, Rena, Leon, Ashton

I've heard stories about Ashlay and Opera (and Ernest) being badass. But I think Cyuss is awesome for unknown reasons. Same goes for Ashton, I have this thing for dual-wielders and two-handers. I'm planning to grab all characters in later playthroughs.

I play presently as Roddick, Ilia, Ashlay, Ioshua. Though I have Phia, Ronyx and Mavelle hanging around a well.

The 2nd I still need to pick up but I'm money strapped for a bit since my tv just died on me but back in the playstaion days it was Dias, Claude, Rena and Celine.

Well I finally bought Second evolution and it's quite nostalgic. I like the widescreen and though they could of enhanced the sprites and backgrounds in some areas a bit to clear them up it's basically a straight port with more portraits and voice acting so far. There are also some battle system tweaks and bug type fixes.. My only quibble so far is the new artwork for Rena makes her look likes shes 14. I like the old portrait for her much better.

I haven't played Second Evolution but I saw some previews on it and noticed that she looks younger, that is awkward when she is a 17 year old but her portrait makes her look adolesent like a child instead of a teenager. Her original one is more proper and I prefer it over the new one.

Even in the anime she looks young like she does in Second Evolution. I guess they decided to scrap the old portrait for the sake of making her fit with her anime look since the portrait is anime styled as well.

I'm more of a fan of the original games looks and the games in general. The remakes have an enhanced battle system, new playable characters, different items and locations. All of those are nice additions but there's just something about the old ones that make me like them more. Maybe because they have been around since my childhood.
