Nice! I was wondering when they'd announce a new one!

Yoshiaki Inagaki mentioned on his site ages ago that NexTech was supposed to do a Star Ocean remake, but the deal fell apart since tri-Ace wanted it to use Star Ocean 3's engine.

If it's a port/remake instead a new game I personally hope it's in 2D.

I wonder if ToDr had enough influence to hopefully start a 2D remake trend. It would be nice sort of, as long as the quality is on par with ToDr and there aren't too many seeing as how the J-RPG market is flooded already.

Why the hell would that have been a problem? Doesn't make any sense at all. The SO3 engine was solid and performed well enough.

Could've turned out amazing, especially if all the gameplay systems remained true to the original SO1/SO2 style with SO3's basic battle engine (except get rid of the pressure sensitive attacks, plz)

Agreed on the point of the pressure sensitive buttons. I hated that.

I'm curious to hear all your thoughts on the multi-platformness (or lack thereof) of the new Star Ocean. The PS3 is doing better than the 360 in Japan, but here in America, the 360 is owning the PS3. Personally, I'd like it to come to 360, but if it doesn't, that's just one more reason for me to buy a PS3.

I wouldn't be surprising if this Star Ocean whatever will be going to DS or Wii considering how XBox 360 and PS3 are doing in Japan atm. But in any case XBox 360 will be getting tri-Ace's Infinite Undiscovery.

If they put it on the 360, that would be all the more reason for people to buy one. I wouldn't mind it on the Wii or DS, but I'd like it better on the 360. Maybe they'll release it on both.  I'll be happy with the good amount of RPGs coming to the 360 already, Star Ocean would be a HUGE plus. We'll just have to wait till this Saturday to find out.
On a side note... I wonder when IU is gonna be released.

Star Ocean 1 and 2 announced for PSP (the king of ports/remakes, of course!), SO4 for an undisclosed platform. SO4 will be a "high end" game.

And there's a single screenshot of SO1:

Obviously, they ported the SO2 engine, and are building an SO1 remake on top of it. It's a perfect fit, since SO2's gameplay was pretty much everything the original game's was with loads of refinement here and there.

Judging by this, I'm going to wager that SO2 is going to be an enhanced port. Mention of new sprite designs, at least. Hopefully the framerates are better, running on the PSP.

And for the love of god, speed up the battle system. That's about the biggest issue that's kept SO2's system from aging well.

That's my biggest beef with the announcement, but I probably shouldn't be surprised that Star Ocean is following the Tales series in that regard =P. Looks good so far!

Seems like SO1-2 are different releases,

Star Ocean - First Departure [linkety link for another screenshot at 1up]

Star Ocean - Second Evolution will be the new name of Star Ocean - The Second Story.

To be honest, I dunno if I should be happy or crying... SO1 looks like some PSX reject.

Ofcourse, one could always dream of an English release of these + question if Blue Sphere will get secretly redone too.

PSP? If found that rather unexpected...

I've got a feeling that SO4 will end up on PS3, and always have, especially with all the "high-end" talk. Still... the system's not doing too well at the moment. Makes me worried. Still, I'm not going to start worrying until they actually announce the thing.
