What is a Chain

OK, I'm playing Tales of Graces with a friend, who's also a long time Tales fan, and we keep getting teh "smash with 4 chain" challenge, but neither of us know exactly what a chain is. Anyone know?

IIRC, a chain is each new arte used in a combo.

Majinken -> Shuuoushin -> Raizanshuu will hit around 5-6 times and is a 3 chain (of artes) assuming that it all combos.

This means you'll need to defeat an enemy with a sequence of at least 4 different attacks to achieve the technical smash. I don't think the cc1 attack arte counts as a chain. Note that different doesn't mean that you're not allowed to repeat an arte. Spamming Majinken 4 times in a row is perfectly valid.
