Compare Symphonia's dub to FFX, FF7:AC, FF12, Tales of Vesperia, Lost Odyssey and Metal Gear Solid 4. Those games have great voice acting. Symphonia is trash in the VO department when compared to them. It had a few good voices, but overall nothing that great. Colette espcially was horrible (and shes like the one voice kept in TOS2....go figure >_>)

And I like to pretend that the GBA port of Phantasia does not exist....
Uh, FFX was the only one around when Symphonia came out iirc. And being a Square Enix game they had a huge budget compared to Symphonia's I bet. VAs weren't too great back then, but Symphonia's was pretty decent compared to the average game dub back in the day. Of course it pales compared to recent Tales dubs (Even Legendia and Abyss in dubbing were quite better quality-wise than Symphonia, voiceless character quests aside.), but that doesn't make it not passable for the first real Tales localization with a decent budget.
I agree with you with Colette's voice, though she sounds tons better in ToS2 because the VA acts better than in ToS.

Well Square Enix has proven that with Star Ocean 4, budget =/= quality, as that thing was a gigantic shit pile in the English audio department. Thankfully SO4 Int will have Japanese acting.

Tales of Vesperia probably had a way smaller budget than SO4 did, and look how great its dub was anyway.

Whoa... I seriously can't believe people are hating on Symphonia's dub so much. In my mind it's easily second to Vesperia and eons better than its spin-off sequel.

SO4's known for trashy voice acting in Japanese, too. Word from people who know both languages say the localization tried too hard to replicate the original nuances in English.

I'm also of the opinion that Symphonia's original dub is still fine for the most part. I think the "failings" are more due to the characters themselves. Lloyd and Colette really made me want to punch them a lot due to their own stupidity more than the VA (which worked for them) when I replayed the game a year ago. Symponia's voice acting doesn't come anywhere near a 100 mile radius of anything on audioatrocities.com.

Heck, Symphonia had some of the same voice talent as FFX. Tara Strong (Rikku) did Presea, if I remember correctly.

I think Symphonia's biggest problem was the muted skits. It always irks me when they leave things silent that originally had voices. To me the skits just lose their soul completely without the voices.

Symphonia's problem was the directing. There was some pretty awkward delivery in some places, particularly in unimportant scenes with relatively unimportant NPCs (Fun fact: Chocolat and Lymle have the same voice actress, 'kay?), as well as "WHAT IS THE OMINOUS LIGHT THAT THREATENS TO ENGULF US!?" That said, the main cast did a great job, particularly Scott Menville, Jennifer Hale, and Cam Clarke.

Agreed with imtocheaptopayforxbl on the point of the skits. Playing Vesperia and even some parts of Dawn of the New World in English really made me appreciate voiced dialogue in skits, despite the fact that I want to throw a heavy object at Lloyd and Zelos' new voice actors in the latter's case.

Also, Sword Dancer music is awesome.

FFX's voice acting is HORRENDOUS.

Sorry for the interruption, you can go back to the topic now.

i know it was just released in japan (and sold very well) but have they announced anything for NA??? i WANT it also here are some numbers (copy and paste from playstation university)

Tales of Vesperia launched on the Xbox 360 and managed to do a pathetic 106k the first week and then struggled to get past 170k within a year. On the flip side of things Namco released Tales of Vesperia for the PS3 earlier this month which was essentially a year old port that somehow managed to sell 140k within it’s first day and 217k within it’s first week.

To say the least these are very impressive numbers for a YEAR old port and hopefully other JRPG devs will start to catch on to see that if your going to put a JRPG on a home console it should be the PS3. Why? Because thats what the PS3 fanbase in Japan wants and will purchase. Case-In-Point Tales of Vesperia.

To compare the numbers the Xbox 360 version of Tales Of Vesperia has sold 400,000 Worldwide with 170,000 from Japan and 180,000 from the US and a mere 40,000 from the UK.

On the other hand the first week sales of the PS3 version has sold more then half of the 360’s total yearly sales. If this doesn’t wake up JRPG devs I don’t know what will. Lets all hope ToV PS3 finds it’s way to America sometime in 2010.

supposedly it's a case of signing a 1-year timed exclusive agreement with microsoft to get their development money. then they port to PS3 for massive sales. end result: screw over the 360 user who actually bought their 360 release. nice job, namco.

(unless they end up doing a 360 DLC, of course... but i wouldn't hold my breath)

That pretty much is the case. Though, Namco wouldn't be the first do that. I hear the PS3 is hard to develop for and that Microsoft is really helpful to devs. Microsoft just wants to gain a foothold in Japan >_> But no one in Japan is interested.

It's almost been two weeks since my copy of ToV PS3 shipped. Where is it?! D8 *impatience*

Hardly any English, definitely not enough for you to play through it unless you read guides, but you'll miss out on story/characters.
As for the Xboxes, try making sure you get a Jasper unit, those have a harder time red ringing I've heard. Google it.
