Heh, I still haven't played Rogue Galaxy Tongue

I was planning on playing the undub version too, but if that's so I'll look into it.

Tales of the Abyss... I prefer the Japanese voices by a mile, even because I like the voice acctress who did Tear very much from other endeavors.

Crisis Core should be good too, but I prefer that one in particular in Japanese, for sure.

EDIT: In Tales of the Abyss undub you have the skits voiced so it's a lot better from that alone Cheesy

I heard the skit werent voiced int he undub, cause they were blocke dby the game, or something

The 2.0 version of the patch fixes that. But the Abyss undub doesn't sub any of the videos that don't have subs. So, if you're an anal person that wants to understand everything, you may want to avoid it.

An anal person shouldn't play undubs at all.  I mean, the differences between the Japanese script and the English one alone would be enough to bother them assuming they understand any Japanese.

Tales games are usually well dubbed to the point I don't worry about these "undub" things.  And if I wanted to hear the Japanese voices, I could always just play the Japanese games, though I understand that most may not have that option.

Well, most people playing undubs don't know any Japanese beyond a few words and expressions most likely picked up from watching anime, so I guess most of them aren't anal at all.

I'm trying to dig into that, but it was definitely attempted, I think they ran into difficulties.

no no, they extracted and subbed them at least optionally, they even subbed the opening with karaoke vocals.

i assume it's for fun, just to hear the japanese voices. i certainly don't see anything wrong with the voice work (excluding ToP GBA of course). even the earliest Tales voice efforts (Eternia) were passable, and by now it's really good.

Abyss is passable in english, but I find it so much better in japanese.

As for Eternia... first game I remember having to turn the voice overs off, it was just hideous; I want a undub for that one.

The most  annoying are the In-Battle VAs, cause the battles seem... strange (When allies getting hit "ouchies" or "ou!" sounds really bad) and they talk like if they didnt want to ("spread.." Heal..." "Meteor Swarmmmmm...") the only one that is decently bad, but not horrid is Keel (at least his summons sound OK)

Abyss has awesome English VA. The only reason I'd go for an undub of that game is if it actually restored the skit voices, but it apparently doesn't. And that would be for a second playthrough.

I recall trying to undub eternia PSX some years ago but it failed because everything was off sync. There was probably a table somewhere I needed to find.

But I wouldn't want to undub the game. I'd rather insert the US translation into the Japanese version.

The newest version of Abyss' undub actually includes voiced skits, and the movies were subbed. (This is pretty recent, like a few months maybe, the older undub didn't include skits)

I agree, I didn't mind the voices of Abyss and thought they were good, but when going through the game again, it's refreshing to hear a different set of VA.

And yeah about Eternia, I remember attempting to undub (both ways, adding english text to jp version and japanese voices into english version) and they ended up out of sync, and I just gave up because it didn't really matter that much.

It's all horrible for me no matter what you say; but I'm willing to accept that it's just me or that I'm in a minority.

Eternia's dub strikes me as terrible though, I couldn't bare with it.

I'd love to see that Smiley

That way around is actually easier? *confused*

As far as I was able to tell, ToE doesn't require nearly as much ASM hacking as ToP does. It was already designed with variable width fonts in mind and that solves a lot of problems. The biggest hacks would probably be to reduce the number of columns in the tech and item lists, which judging by ToD and ToP would actually be pretty darn simple.

And it would also restore the skits, which someone with more ASM hacking prowess than I have could help subtitle them. It also restores things like the pocketstation games and the original opening (which had some footage cut and reordered)

But no, I am not considering a venture towards this right now. I'm buried as it is.

understandable, but your insight into it might still be useful for someone who wants to get started with it.

Of course I wouldnt ask you to do the job Wink, it would be egoist thought, but it seems from what you say that with a good ASM hacker, the job can be done, interesting..
