I know how most of us who played Tales of Legendia USA version were dissapointed that many NPCs were not voiced, and how the entire 2nd half of the game was not voiced.

It was recently brought to my attention by a friend that he was able to take the the English music from the USA version of Budokai Tenkaichi, and replace it with the Japanese music from the Japanese version of Tenkaichi. The reason he did this was because the original Japanese version featured music from the actual show, while the American release altered the music to feature music of past Budokai games, which many fans did not like. So now, he has a working USA version of Budokai Tenkaichi with the Japanese version's music (music from the show).

By the way, my friend also informed me that there was a Japanese group who edited their versions of Budokai 3 to feature sound effects and music from the show, such that they could play Budokai 3 with the music from the show.

My question is, would anybody here have any idea if the missing voice actor portions in the USA release of Tales of Legendia can be filled in by the Japanese voices from the Japanese release? Or if we could replace all the voices?

It should be very possible...

In an easy case scenario, and with a proper mod solution that'll boot pretty much anything you feed it that has an a PS2 exe or .ELF. (Like a HDD or a not too old Mod-chip)

Taking all files from the US version and replacing the following with their counterparts from the Japanese "could possibly" work

AFS/BATTLE.AFS
AFS/MOVIE.AFS
AFS/SND.AFS

MB5/BATTLE.MB5
MB5/MOVIE.MB5
MB5/SND.MB5

You might only have to replace the .AFS set, but I think you'll have to include the MB5.

I don't have time to check this now if it really works. (maybe I'll do it later)

But atleast the US version contains lots of empty/dummy sound entries, so I guess those might be places where the Japanese has audio (but I haven't checked, so I can't say for sure).

And those 3 archives listed there are the ones that contains audio/speech atleast, and I guess their names should be obvious.

If this doesn't work, it might work to manualy extract all the audio parts from the Japanese set and insert in the English archives, but that still might create problems that requires you to hack in the new places on the disc for all audio/speech :/

And in a worst case scenario, it might be totaly impossible, if they've removed the triggers for the audio in the scenes that has no audio (but it atleast seems like they've only dummied it instead, so I guess it should be a quick job atleast)

Will this also work with Tales of Destiny? I want to change the opening FMV...

Assuming it does, can anybody....um...send me the MOVIE.[fileextensionhere] file from ToD JPN? I already have the US version, and I don't see why I should buy it again just because I want a different opening. I'd appreciate it...

Is it possible to switch the circle and x buttons back to the way they were.  That drives me bananas.

The options menu in the US/Canada version can change it. It's just the options are preset. Once you do change them, it completely switches X and Circle's options everywhere in the game (Circle for confirm X for cancel in menus, Circle for attack X for tech in battle, etc.)

The PSX is a bit more tricky, but if you read Cless' PSX hacking doc (should be on the main site + probably at romhacking.org too) you should be able to understand how to properly rip a PSX game's files to your HD and then just replace... Uhm... I think it's called "OPENING.STR" or "INTRO.STR" (Just use an STR player like PSXMC, STRplay or something to manualy open and check) with the one from the Japanese version before creating the edited/altered ISO

Carnivol: Could you please take a look at Tales of Legendia and see if the voice swapping is possible? It doesn't have to be immediately, just as long you are able to eventually check it out.

I know that I checked for that right away but didn't find anything.  I'll look more carefully.  Thanks for the heads up.

Well, I'm not sure if it changes out of battle options anymore. I went back. It's still what I said. To do it, you go to options and go to controls. Then just press left and right and they have like 24 combinations which is weird because at most they should have 16 since it's only 4 buttons... unless my math is wrong...

yep, your math is wrong Tongue

there should be 4 * 3 * 2 * 1 = 24 possible permutations.

okay, so the game (ToL) was not very happy towards region swapping of files.
(Unless black screen with no system activity = happy)

I might try something else later, just for the heck of it.
But even if it works, don't count on me going through the trouble of inserting thousands of audio files into empty spots and checking if they match their correct position in-game (if they even show up somewhere when added to dummy entries)

>.< Thanks for your efforts Carnivol. I'm sure it's possible, as the Japanese folks do sound effects/ voice swapping quite often. They did similar stuff to Budokai 3 by taking sound effects and music from the show and replacing it in the Budokai 3 game.

I was thinking: I'm on final chapter and EVERY CONVERSATION BETWEEN MAIN CHARACTERS ARE VOICED.

Where are not voiced? NPC's? Even Harriet, Shirley, Stella, Fenimore, Walter, Maurits, Vaclav and The Terrors, The Oresoren, Someone talking with Will in Werites Beacon...
All Voiced.

If i'm wrong correct me.

There are character quests after the main quest....all of which isn't voiced but was in the JP version.

I guess you'll be happy if you liked the game, you have another half to play through =P. Wish I was as oblivious as you haha!

As its legality is questionable I won't provide it directly Google for "scph1001.bin" or "scph7502.bin".
