So the Tales Channel finally updated with some info on the TOD2 PSP port... And man is it just me or does it not look very good? Like Kyle's sprite has some funky coloring going on, the 3D models look different...

I was excited for this port, and now I'm left alittle dissapointed from the screenshots... It seems like they are half assing the graphics. Maybe I should save my money and hunt down the PS2 verison!

Of course they could fix the problems by the time it comes out... but it's kind of strange TOP and TOE look great on the PSP, why such a differences with TOD2?

Hmm? What?

Okay, after comparing them side-by-side, I see I was wrong to initially think you were crazy; there is a difference. However, I'm seeing nothing but improvement. Even if you have a personal preference for the original graphics, why aer ToP and ToE "great" compared to this?

The backgrounds do look a little fuzzy compared to the super-crisp sprites though.

Cyllya predicts:
--Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World will reveal that Ratatosk was involved in ToS's last required scene in Heimdall.
--Tales of Vesperia's plot will involve space aliens in some way

All I see is greater color saturation. And the text looks slightly flattened vertically. Other than that, it looks the same to me.

Also, ToD2 uses low res pre-rendered backgrounds and high res map sprites. It's much more obvious with an HDTV. For the PSP LCD, it's noticeable since its picture quality is >>>>>>> than an SDTV.

It looks pretty much the same. More color saturation and stuff like Cless said...

I think the world map's 3D is actually a bit worse. PSP makes 3D things a bit more jaggier than PS2 from what I've seen. I've never really seen a PSP game match up exactly to the 3D that PS2 can do; PSP's 3D is usually a step down from PS2's.

Graphics aside... I haven't been keeping up with news about this, but did they ever say that this will be more than just a straight-up port? The way I see it, they're just shoving this out for people who are playing ToD-remake. They'll have the option of two systems to get ToD2 for. Plus they can charge whatever the standard price is for PSP games, which I'm guessing is more than The Best's 2800 yen, for the same exact game.

I'm pretty sure they just said this was a port...

oo and thanks for the comparision it isn't that bad when you put the two side by side...
But I think the main problem I have with it is the color saturation with Kyle he kind of jumps out compared to the other sprites... Maybe it shall look better on the PSP's screen.

Oh c'mon. The PS2 version doesn't actually look that washed out, it's just those pics. The real thing looks comparable to the PSP pics.

It might look worst to you 'cause the PSP battle screen seems to be zoomed in more.
It's not just the text, looks like the whole game is squeezed down a bit vertically (compare the compass and map legends if you don't believe me).

And did you actually play ToP PSP? The way they had to mix the screen ratios doesn't make it great.

I don't think they're exactly shoving this out for the ToD Remake demographic so they have something to follow through after it dies down. ToD2 PSP is another outing for the Japanese portable commuter crowd. You can tell by the way they've made ToE+ToP+ToD2 portable. ToD was too fugly for a portable so we get a PS2 remake. This was essentially their next phase after the launch of mobile phone Tales. On the bright side, they'll have to do more original crap for a while after ToD remake and ToD2 PSP.

Was ToP PSP pretty bad?  I hadn't really heard a lot about it, but I was curious what they had done to fit it to the PSP screen.  In any case, ToD2 PSP doesn't look that bad to me, but just in terms of power, the PSP really can't be expected to compete with the PS2.  In any case, I usually assume that when a game gets ported to a portable system that it will suffer from some of this kind of stuff.  If we're lucky then it'll be an improvement (or at least as good).  If we're not lucky, well, we're really no worse off.  You can always play the console version.  Or at least that's my line of thinking.

ToD2 doesn't really push the PS2 that hard so a good port to PSP should be possible.

The only issue I see is disc space. I can't recall if a dual-layer UMD was possible. If not, I'd guess they'd have to at least re-work the data a lot to get rid of some redundancy, and also use better audio compression to make the FMV fit.

Yes I've played TOP for the PSP and I thought it looked just as good as the Playstation verison if not alittle better.

And for the record I've also played abit of TOD2 on the PS2(I don't own it though, as I plan on buying the PSP verison when it comes out... Maybe) but stopped as not to spoil my play through on the PSP.

Also I too wonder how they'll fit a 3ishGB game on to a 1ishGB UMD... Maybe this game will be the first two disc PSP game?

maybe they are taking out a lot of stuff like fmvs (IIRC the fmvs munge file is 1,41 gb ?) so that and a little work on other files would make it fit to 1 UMD

btw dual layer umd doesnt exist

Anything is possible, but honestly, I'd expect to see Tales of Destiny PS2 in English before any of the PSP titles...  After how ToP GBA preformed, I doubt that Bandai-Namco is in a great rush to put out another portable game.

Really i'm hoping it doesn't get released in North America...(Cause i'm short on money as it is haha)  Some dude was working on a script(hope he still is...) and that's good enough for me. Also theres the translation patch going on... So really do we need an offical translation?

Not only that but the PSP itself isn't doing very impressively. It's currently being stomped on by the DS and even the GBA is still selling significantly better. Not the most attractive platform to publish on, really...

Plus, I'm pretty sure that Sony is selling the system itself at a loss.  Even with that, most people still aren't willing to toss out that much for a portable.  Especially when they can get a GBA for like $70 or a DS for $130.  It's not all that shocking to see that a lot of the titles for the PSP are just ports and remakes, financially, only the developers with a little money to throw around or nothing to lose can take their chances on a system like the PSP.

A lot of PSP originals end up on the PS2 too, they're not making the return on the system. The PSP Grand Theft Auto made it to PS2, Lumines and Tokobot were made for PS2 as well.
