Turns out last month's Nintendo Power "Epic-RPG" announcement:

Quote
Next month’s cover story is an RPG so fantastic, so engrossing, so epic, and so hush-hush that we’d have to erase your memories if we told you what it is. In fact, maybe we already did. Role-playing fans, get ready for a big one.

... was this:

Oh well, I'm really disappointed that with so many possible developers they had to overhype something we already knew (and is so epic that it comes behind in budget to Vesperia, let alone stuff like Lost Odyssey) but... At least it's officially coming to US; new subtitle too.

Lame. I guess this is the nail in the coffin for Tales of Destiny remake. Do a spinoff, and then another spinoff.

It was pretty much certain this was going to make it over, anyway. I never doubted that wouldn't try to cash in on the Symphonia name. I'm at least glad (well, maybe shocked) they didn't fall into the trap of calling it Tales of Symphonia 2.

I dunno, I mean... Namco wouldn't announce that on Nintendo Power, unless it was coming for the Wii. My guess is tht they didn't even look seriously at it yet, and perhaps won't even do so.

A 2 in there would imply it was for the people who played the first one, and reduce it's demographic, I mean, we know it's a sequel, and it's not even a direct one (more like a spin-off).

What I find totally stupid is that they're not taking the chance of a sequel coming over to make money out of the prequel in the sense Capcom did with... say, RE4 Wii Edition; they could (and should) even throw in the PS2 extras, add 16:9 and sell it for a budget price like 40 bucks.

This would make even more sense in Europe, considering the GC version often sold out at retailers until it got pulled, and now it's out of print and selling at astounding prices at ebay. What now, for the sequel? the first one is out of print, and reprints of a GC game are past their time.

Not only Destiny Remake, I now have doubts about Innocence as well.

Heh, and I thought I was the only one who expected (and feared) that.

A direct sequel is a game that fits the literary definition of sequel, meaning it's complete in itself (not just "episode 2") but continues the narrative of a previously completed work. This is to make a distinction versus the video game jargon definition of sequel, which has nothing to do with plot.

A spin-off, at least for the purpose of Tales, is a game that is either for mobile phone or doesn't fit the "norm" of a the series in terms of gameplay. (Must be more different than ToR to apply.)

TOSKOR is not one of these rather than the other. It's both of them.

Cyllya predicts:
--Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World will reveal that Ratatosk was involved in ToS's last required scene in Heimdall.
--Tales of Vesperia's plot will involve space aliens in some way

Fair enough.

But I still want mine Tales of Symphonia: Wii Special Edition or something.

And since quite clearly, ToS:KoR/DoaNW is closer to the Abyss engine than it is to the ToS one; hell, I'd pay for a TotA with 16:9 and 60 fps on the Wii. Darn Namco.

Still, this is awesome.

I did see this game getting a North America release.  Though I have to agree on the sentiment that the way Nintendo hyped it up was anti-climatic.

Well, it's nice and all I have to say about it.

Why change the subtitle?  That's the only thing I don't get.  Glad to hear it'll be released in the States.  As for the voice actors, there's little doubt that the Lloyd that featured in TotW will be the voice for Lloyd.  At least they picked a financial winner with this game, it's got all the makings that made ToS a huge success in the US.

As for ToDr, it'll get translated whether it's officially or not, so I'm not worried about that.  In other news, I just saved $250 since I don't have to buy a Japanese Wii.  Yay!

And who would translate it unnoficially? I dont know of any group interested specifically in ToDR DC or ToDR

Well, I for one would be very interested in working on ToDr.  However, having an interest and having a viable project are different.  If the opportunity to work on ToDr arose, I would jump on it.  But not at the moment.  I'm enjoying some time off from working on any hardcore projects for the time being, but ToDr must be translated at some point.  Sadly, the skills that I have to offer are commonplace, finding someone capable and willing to hack a translation into a game is another matter.  The PS2 is still largely undocumented when compared to other systems, so it's no surprise that nobody is jumping on the game even though I'm sure many would love to.

I'm interested. I'm actually digging deeper into the DC than I did with the original. But that doesn't mean I'm going to announce a project soon. I want to finish ToP and get further with ToD2 before I even think of that.

I can say that this deep directory system is really pissing me off, though.

I still wish Namco would do this game officially so that it would be one huge thing off my back.

I kinda like the new/English title.
From what I've seen of the game so far and the little attention I've paid to story details, it seems to be a very fitting title too.

Is Nintendo involved in the localization process again?
If so, I guess it wouldn't be too unlikely that they'd manage to fish out the same voice actor pool they had for the original. Not sure when it comes to Namco side of things, though.
(No, that is not me taking a hit at their localization department. Just me pointing out that I don't know what's within reach to them :p)
