Just thought i'd mention this here as well...

Tales of Hearts
K-E Translation Project

So I actually started work on this back in June/July or so. I've been working on hacking and translation thus far, but would need a dedicated translator and possibly editor at some point, as I can't really translate fast enough or long enough to be able to do a whole game. At this point a decent chunk of the core programming, etc. is done and figured out, but there are still quite a few (major) things remaining, like FMV/battle subtitles, 3D subsystem hacking, a bunch of random hacks here and there, etc. I figured I might as well mention the project since I've been working on it for a bit by this point.

Some screenshots:

(Everything is very much WIP, of course -- but please do point out any problems.)

As far as progress goes, well... there's still a ton of stuff left to do, but I guess you could say my current goal is to do a menu translation cum first bit of the game translation (upto, say, where you leave Xing's village). Once I'm more or less sure that things are working out correctly, I would be very much interested in a translator, if anyone is up for it. (The same still holds for ND2/ND3, by the way!)

Many thanks of course go out to the many many people who helped out thus far, either directly or indirectly (via advice, tools, documents, etc.).

And of course, if Bandai Namco were to formally request me to stop, I would be more than happy to comply. I would hope that the reason for that would be that they have plans for an official release. In that case, looking forward to hearing from you! (You can count on one sale right here, at least Tongue)

Isn't there a group already working on this? Wouldn't it be better if you and them joined efforts? I doubt they wouldn't want the help of someone as experienced with the Tales series as you.

Just a thing to note, the official website transliterates the main characters name as SHING, not Xing.

http://www.bandainamcogames.co.jp/cs/list/talesofhearts/

Just thought I'd let you know that. I think most fans would prefer the official Japanese spellings.

Your hack looks awesome though, just like another professional translation does. Great job. Looking forward to it.

But...Aren't most of the names, based on rocks? Besides, you can change the character names to whatever you like. Undecided

This translation is looking very professional Kajitani.

I'll be looking forward to playing this game! Smiley

the official website transliterates

Not to sound rude or anything, but that's about when many stops caring.

Japanese + romanization = Does not compute.

Besides, as someone pointed out over on the official Tales forums; Xing/Shing is pronounced more or less the same way, and Xing is a Chinese word for "Star" (Which goes hand in hand with many of the elements used in Tales of Hearts. Please note how the guy's surname is "Meteoryte" Wink)

In general, Japanese spellings are wonky and gimped. People need to stop treating "roman letters spelling Japanese stuff" as "English" (or any other language, for that matter). If you look through stuff through history, historical figures have had variations of their names depending on which country you're from. Just look up some random "Queen Elizabeth" and check her out in various languages. Adjustments to names are often the product of the pronunciation rules that apply to someone's language or the limitations to its alphabet.

Anyway, since I love bringing it up (last time I did was when explaining a few things related to the official Tales of Destiny's failtastic romanizations and some of the decisions we've made for names in the Tales of Destiny - Director's Cut translation project)

Take a look at this Tales of Destiny - Preview. This is an official Japanese trailer for the game, probably the "the first" trailer for the game that was shown in Japan. Notice how they've romanized the names and compare them to the more commonly seen ones, and then compare to the old Tales of Destiny (PS1) localization Wink

For those of you who want to be so pure about things and have XING -> SHING, I guess you can rest easy~~
The game lets you change character names, so unless seeing about 5 dialog lines with the Xing name doesn't make you turn off the NDS, you should be perfectly capable of changing Xing -> Shing through the game's option for changing character names Wink

Why does it matter if his name is Xing, just rename him if you don't like it. Anyways nice knowing that your working on this project Kajitani-Eizan but I still await for ND2 and 3 ^_^

Just thought I'd let you know that. I think most fans would prefer the official Japanese spellings.

Only the romanization fanatics would enjoy that. Most people would prefer a locaization-like approach that carries over the intended names rather than the Engrish that Namdai brings out (Lion, anyone?).
