people with projects being bashed and told its impossible to do. It may take some time, probably a loong time but it isnt strictly impossible.(look how long the top patch has taken) therefore you cannot really tell someone a project they want to get started is impossible. I'm sorry if i seem a bit rude. its just that im a CSE major at a university and it pisses me off whenever my classmates hate and say i wont finish any of my side projects telling me it is impossible. I love the look of envy when i show it to them though.

Firstly, thanks jaja ^^ I'm totally with you.

Even if you could dub the game and replace the files there is that matter of the file size changing. Unless you change the lba, the game won't be able to take it and will either reject the file upon insertion or just corrupt the entire ISO.
If you still believe, want to and think you can do it then you're living in a dream world.
1, What if I managed to create the exact same filesize as the file I am replacing?
2, I'd rather live in a dream world full of possibilities than living in a real world where there are too many said impossibilities.
EDIT:
3, If I believe that something is impossible I will never get anywhere. Impossibilities is for the individual man to decide himself, for one man approaching women may seem impossible. Whilst for another man it is childs play. One man may feel it impossible to build a house because he hasn't realized the knowledge of building a house. Whilst a weak old man may see it as possible to build a house and does all he can to build it.
Saying it is impossible is harsh. Can't you at least "lessen" it and say "It will be a hard task and very time consuming" which is more truth than "impossible". It is just hindering me and putting mental obstacles in front of me. Though you are also giving me more to prove and more to become satisfied by at the end.

Honestly, I think you're nitpicking at his words. Of course it's POSSIBLE, but with how big the game is, and how difficult dubbing would be, on top of making sure the files actually work with the game, making sure everything's lined up correctly....
Ideas are nice, but how are you going about on implementing these ideas? Making specific tools for the game to dub them would be great, but it's not easy by any means.
Even if doing it the manual way was flaw proof regarding file sizes, there's still a lot of room for human error...

to make it the same file size you'd have to strip the game of the original audio. Even then it's not going to be a sure. Compression can be somewhat unpredictable at times what size you estimate the file to be might not be what you wanted. The only way to make sure you can make it the same size is if you're audio files were the same length as the originals. If you wanna do it go for it. It's up to you. If you are successful then maybe you can share the your work with cless (if he is willing).

Honestly i say go for it. some people like to see people fail but other people like myself like it when people set 'impossible goals and achieve them.'
Most likely you won't NEED other peoples help, but asking is not out of the question. i have some other friends in CSE who are seniors so i'll see what i can do. As far as sound recording goes, i have 2 childhood buddies who graduated from MI this past summer so i'll see what i can do. Till then good luck.
edit: im not trying to come off as an asshole to you guys. its just with all the hacking and stuff that goes on i was baffled by how much this guy was bashed. it just seemed like you guys wanted him to quit without even attempting this and everybody hopped on the bandwagon.
ehhh dont mind my mindless rants. its late and my ladyfriend is annoying me so im taking it out on a forum ahaha. my bad guys, my bad.

We're not trying to crush his hopes and dreams, you know.
We were just being realistic. This game is in a weird format as it is.
The only file that could possibly have the audio files in is DAT.BIN but sadly most of the stuff in there, including images is just a compressed pile of shit that only Cless knows how to decompress.

I have actually been wondering, though yet to ask. I have the knowledge and tools to extract the audio from the DAT.BIN (but no other files, which is the frustrating part) and I can't compress it again because that's beyond my knowledge as of now. My friend is currently studying programming for gaming, but I don't know if he'll ever get the knowledge to decompress the DAT.BIN file. Maybe he'll get a greater understanding and knowledge on how to do it in the future, but as of now I have no idea how to decompress the DAT.BIN completely. But to the question!
If it would be possible to extract all the sound files (which I can do) and record them (translated), would it be possible to compress it into the DAT.BIN and replace the original files? Or do you have to decompress it all, replace and the compress?
Now to the REAL question, IF I extract the sound, replace all the sound files (dubbing), could I send the files (in one way or another) to Cless and he can do the compressing or whatnot? Just asking meh. I'll find a solution one way or another but I just had to check the shortcut.

Well the new sound files are obviously going to be a different size than the old ones so to update the new file and have it actually work you need to increase/decrease the LBA size so it fits in properly, otherwise it just corrupts the file.
I'm not really sure how it works with people who make undubs of games because technically Tales of the Abyss Japanese and English sound files will be a completely different size to each other.
To your friend learning programing, is he just learning the usual c++ and what not or is he actually leaning MIPS R5900 (which is PS2 Programming language)?
Also, compression is different with pretty much every games so just because he knows how to do it with one game doesn't mean he will know how to do it with the next game.

yea thats very true. it gave me nightmares...hmmm id say right now you should really look into the undubs for clues if you havent already. there will probably be info there that'll take a lot of the work load away(at least abstractly). if your friend is learning ps2 programming then the undubs will probably help a LOT. as for me i still only program with C so i have to do more research into this ps2 programming. ill update later

But it is still possible to make the new sound files to be the exact same file size as the original file. We've already went over this. But of course, it'll be a lot of hassle and probably will be very frustrating getting that last one single kb or to decrease one kb.
Example:
Quote
Original Filesize: 100 kb
Me: Alright... recording...
Recorded Filesize: 101 kb
Me: GAHHH!!!! *records*
Recorded Filesize: 99 kb
Me: GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!
etc. etc.
:p
He is learning java, c++, gaming development etc. etc. as I said:

Knowing the concept of doing it is different from knowing the actual way to do it <- and that was what I meant with the above quote. That he might grasp the concept, but not know how to do it. But we'll see bout that, cus that's in the future.

Do you have any idea how completely difficult and time consuming that would be?
You'd have to plan the lines then if it turns out they are too big you'd have to get them re recorded. The file size has to be exact, it's pretty much impossible to do it that way.
You would actually just be better off rebuilding the whole thing...

yah thats why he should get into contact imo with the undub teams or at least some members who can point him in the right direction whether they be official or not.

Undubbing is swapping two big files around, the fact that the files both techinically belong to the same game, different region or not makes it a hell of alot easier.
