Shocked

Not an all-time high for the series, but one of the bigger debuts for a recent Tales game. What gives?

What gives?
Two possibilities:
1) The PSP has the biggest share of the Japanese Tales fanbase. (Where were they at the time of the release of ToR PSP though?)
2) The Tales series reached a saturation point where new main games don't reach the whole Tales fanbase anymore due to fatigue while new all-inclusive fan servicing games like this one still do.

That's an intriguing theory that might have some real weight to it. Have Japanese fans finally grown so tired of the storm of new Tales games that they would rather take refuge with older, familiar characters? On one hand, it seems viable, but on the other hand, you would expect ToS:KoR to have done better in Japan if that was the case...

ToS-R doesn't really compare here, being "only" a reference to ToS (which limits the potential audience). If ToS-R were to perform better, ToDr/TODDC should have done better than they did as well etc. Unlike those though RM2 includes references to pretty much the whole series (thus potentially reaching everyone who at one point bought a Tales game), while still having room to include even more in a later iteration.
