You can often change the character encoding of the page that you're viewing depending on the web browser. For example, the first block of text that you posted was in Shift_JIS. The second block was likely in UTF-8 or something else that's viewable under what Firefox tells me is standard Western (ISO-8859-1).

Original Klarth looks... weird

I don't know, if you gave me a really basic description of the guy: white hair, kinda grumpy, studies magic for a living, a bit scruffy....that's probably what I would draw although possibly with a less dopey hat.  Not that I don't like his redesign, but the whole vaguely shamanic vibe with all the tattoos wouldn't have occurred to me.

No...the character I find weird on that site is Origin.  Not that she's female...that makes sense.  It's not the dress either...a dress black as the cosmos spangled with stars seems appropriate.  But the thigh high slit...the cute lacey fringe...the perky little wink in the picture with all the spirits....yeah, weird.

I like old Suzu a lot though.
