At this point in the game, you've all know I've had a pretty conflicting history with Tales of Legendia.  I used to like it, I defended it, then realized it wasn't as great as I thought it was just from recollecting.  During that, some people here were questioning why I was bashing it on the count of how I used to defend the game.  (Then again, I also find myself questioning, "Why is it so strange that I don't like Tales of Legendia anymore and harshly criticizing it?"  It's not like I will be wearing those rose tinted glasses forever).

Okay, since my thoughts was blurry in regards to giving criticism to Tales of Legendia in regards to the actual story and feel like anything I say is going to get shot down harder, I went through to do something unthinkable for most people.

I replayed Tales of Legendia.  Yeah, I decided to do it, despite other games I want to play.  Since I haven't exactly talked much as of late, I just decided to post this topic about me revisiting this game.

What do I have to say about it?  Well, it's an okay game at best (note the key words, "At best").  Do I necessarily like it after that playthrough?  Not really.

I'm not going to talk much about the gameplay, since it's been said enough that the battle system was shallow and the dungeon design was badly designed, being linear yet with a copy and pasted look to it that it's easy to get lost.

The rest of it?  Well, the graphics weren't too bad.  At least it looks good enough (in a design way).  Everything else, I just mainly saw plenty of mediocrity that could also pass for awful.

Now, what I'm going to say is the one I know is going to get a mob ready to chase me out of town.

I find Tales of Legendia's soundtrack to be highly overrated!  I'll admit that there are a few standout, but I can say the same for Tales of the Abyss.  The vocal tracks were good and stands out.  Outside of those few, I really don't see what was so great about it.  Honestly, say what you want about Sakuraba.  Just because someone else came in and composed for it doesn't automatically mean it's better.  Tales of Legendia's soundtrack was no better than anything Sakuraba created for the series (and I'm still on the record that I'm not a big fan of Abyss's soundtrack, so I'm not necessarily a Sakuraba apologist).  It may have a different sound to it but it ends up just as bland as any other Tales soundtrack.  It's a shame too because I actually find Go Shiina to be talented.  I just find his better stuff to be away from Tales of Legendia (Tekken 6 for example).

(On another note, and I'll admit here this part is merely nitpicking more than anything, that one particular track used for some sort of, "Aww, we feel so close" moments, gets really abused to the point that I could do a drinking game where I drink when that track play during the story.  It got pretty tiring hearing that track used so many times.  But like I said, here, it's just nitpicking)

As for the story, I have been seeing some mess with the story and the character development.  The development of the world feels like an afterthought.  They never really touched up about the world outside of the Legacy.  The villains were pretty lame.  Like Vaclav and how he ends up being one of those highly disposable villains, despite how he's supposed to be such a big bad guy.  I also didn't like how they pushed Shirley onto Senel so forcefully (and I do not play the shipping game.  I honestly hated that push in the story).  The character quests were hailed as having such great character development.  All I actually saw was poor character development exposition.  The formula for a character quest pretty much cheapens the development.  Plenty of the issues that were in the character quests were brought up in the main quest and felt like they forgot them and had to throw them in some "extra" quests.  Worst of all, the character quests felt more like an excuse to pad the game for more hours.  It's a shame because there was some genuine emotions in there if the story telling wasn't so bad.  In fact, there was so little meat to the character quests that if they were integrated into the main quests, the character developments wouldn't be so great.  I think I'm more disappointed on how it squandered a story that wouldn't have been so bad but ended up being so poorly told.  That's why I find myself wanting to say the story is mediocre/borderline awful.

So, I found Tales of Legendia is nothing more than an average game that manages to also have flaws that can push it into the awful zone (I have said earlier that the game is okay at best, but never as a definitive viewpoint.  I put it as a mediocre/borderline awful game).  It's not the worst game in the world.  However, I no longer get the love this game gets, mostly as of late.  5 years later, I have come to see that Tales of Legendia really was a serious disappointment (and I probably would love to retrospectively place Tales of Legendia as my most disappointing game of 2006).

When I went back and tried to play Legendia after playing some of the more recent games, I found it almost impossible. For whatever reason, the battle system that I didn't have any serious problems with the first time around grated endlessly on my nerves. Legendia has a lot of flaws. Lots and lots of them. It also has some nice moments and some wasted potential. It could've been better than what it was. I enjoyed it at the time, and so I'm content with the experience I had with it.

Regarding the soundtrack, it appears Legendia's soundtrack remains my favorite in the series based just on the quantity of music from the album that I rated highly. That's in spite of the fact that it has less music than most of the other games. I don't think it's flawless, but it is very very good. I like a lot of Sakuraba's music. I always enjoy his battle and world map themes. I rarely enjoy his dungeon or city themes (A Vow of Unity excluded). I don't think Shiina is inherently better than Sakuraba, but I did think that the game that he composed had more interesting music than most Tales games overall. I'd like to see him do another game, but if Sakuraba is all that we get from here on out, I can be happy enough with that. There are gems in almost every Tales soundtrack and I don't think that's going to change.

I listened to the ost on the youtubes and I have to say it kicks every other tales sound tracks ass. I did try playing it myself a few years ago but stopped playing it and returning it for a very specific reason. Usually I stop playing games just because but when I return one then there was something I truly disliked about it. I can't remember what it was though. I may take another shot at it and pick it up again cause I that's the mood I'm in lately. I do remember really disliking the character designs though.

I don't know.
Legendia wasn't horrible, but it wasn't great, either.
My take on it's based on it being my third (fourth if you count the hour or so I spent on Destiny before giving up on it) game I played in the series back in the day; I do want to go back to it some day to see how it holds up after playing later games in the series but I'm a little scared that the lack of things I take for granted now (I ABUSE backstep when I play the 3D games) will hinder my enjoyment of it..!

Also, RE: the music: THIS is not only the best song in the game, but the best song in the entire Tales series: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=799e7RFesrI
Honestly, though? I absolutely loved the Oresoren and the Bantam Bouncers, and it's a shame that later games rarely (if ever?) reference them. :/

Now, just to mention a few things in regards to the first time I played.

I tend to end up remembering how there was certain things about the battle system that rubbed me the wrong way.  Now, I've learned that this was a throwback battle system done the wrong way.  Also, the dungeons got pretty tiring and boring.  I get the feeling I was sort of in denial about Tales of Legendia 5 years ago.  Replaying it got me to remember some of this stuff from the first playthrough.

That does get to see a few things with how I saw Tales of Legendia on my second playthrough.  I was pretty aware that I'm 1 of 5 people who actually isn't impressed by Tales of Legendia's soundtrack.

Also, I was trying to avoid defending my position with:

1.  Shirley is a mary sue argument (especially using the term).  I can see why people hate Shirley but most of my reason for not liking Shirley is more of a case of, "They really didn't get me to care enough about her, no matter how much they try to make me care."  Yeah, not even to the point of, "I so want to give her a good punch to the face because I can't stand her!"  Besides, someone else already said something about her using the "Shirley is a mary sue" bit.

2.  The cliché argument.  Now, I know there's the phrase, "There's nothing original under the sun."  I know, late 2009-2010, I used that argument in regards to Tales of Legendia, since it's pretty much rehashing elements of Tales of Eternia and Tales of Symphonia, and did nothing special with it.  Of course, I also remember a certain movie was also released in late 2009 that was highly criticized by many for basically being a rehash of Dances with Wolves or Pocahontas (take your pick) and really stick with the argument.  I wanted to avoid using that argument.

That being said, neither of those were took into high consideration in regards to what I thought of the story.  I don't think Tales of Legendia's story was really anything special like it was made out to be, even without those argument.

So, I'm just mentioning a few things I tried to avoid doing when I was talking about this.

*watches clip in SoNick's post*  Okay, I'll put the Oresoren Dance as one of those, "It has its moments" thing.

The main problem I had with the game besides the battle system being a bit stiff and clunky is that most of the Character development was in the post game. Now don't get me wrong some of the post game character development was very good but have what feels like 75% of your character development in the postgame seems like a terrible idea.

My biggest complaint with ToL (Besides for the story, gameplay, characters) is that I feel the title was a spin off to a Tales game I never played. You only ever explore the floating island/ship thing and never the various continents that we hear so much about though out the game.

My condolences. If you're going to waste your time with a kusoge, the least you could do is play something by Idea Factory. ZING!

PS: That was an altogether not-serious post. Do not take seriously. I repeat, DO NOT TAKE SERIOUSLY.

One playthrough is enough for me, I went into it with severely low expectations and came out pleasantly surprised; wouldn't want to murk that up!

One thing about the soundtrack is that while I think the individual tracks are pretty much all amazing, some are overused and don't fit into the situations as well as they could have. I think it's a great soundtrack to listen to when not playing.

I like the soundtrack by itself too. This track is probably my favorite both in and out of context:

Unless I'm crazy and imagining an extra violin, I like the dueling violins that kicks in around 14 seconds in.
