I was wondering, how much of the story's been changed? Would I be able to enjoy by using the PS1 English version as a translation guide?

As a translation guide, probably not. The story hasn't actually changed.. but it's been rewritten and a lot has been greatly expanded. Generally though, if you've played and are familiar with the PS1 version and want to jump into this for the new gameplay, you'll do fine.

As for me, I managed to get a good session going yesterday after an otherwise crowded weekend. I've just crossed the halfway mark (beating Lydon) at 20 hours with my characters at level 40! This is EASILY taking over Eternia as my favorite Tales game. The gameplay in this one is maddeningly awesome. I simply love everything about this game.

I got a surprise half-day at work yesterday and managed to get a good run in (instead of going Christmas shopping like I should have). I just completed Leon's fate.. and boy did they ham that up nice and sloppy.. oh well, I figured they would.

On a sort-of related note, a friend and I were discussing how ridiculously stupid Aries' death was in Final Fantasy VII, to die from a little butter knife wound after being stomped on by giant robots, shot at consistently by machine guns and clawed and chomped at by huge bestial monsters, not to mentioned being revived several times by items and magic.. it always seemed incredibly retarded to me. Anyway, looking at the FMV for what happens in Tales of Destiny, I have to say.. even considering the game logic (Life Bottles, etc.), he's pretty screwed. It's much more believable here, in my opinion.

A better voice, her hi-ougi voice clips hurt my ears.. I didn't find her voice anywhere near squeeky in the original, but now nearly 10 years later it's like ow <_<;. Regardless though, the VA's did pretty good for reprising their old roles.

And well, I always figured that story deaths are actually deaths, where as being killed in a battle is just a character being knocked unconscious. It makes it all make much more sense unless the game specifies otherwise (Fire Emblem).

Here's the first draft of a Jewel/Material Guide I composed. Often when I'm playing Japanese RPGs I'll grab an item list or something from a Japanese guide and run it through Google to give me at least an idea of things I can't read or figure out on my own.. I figured I'd submit this to GameFAQs so I added in all the introduction and instructional stuff (usually I just make an Excel spreadsheet for my personal use). Hopefully somebody else will find it useful.

     Tales of Destiny PS2
     Material/Jewel Guide
         Version 1.00
Created By: Leroy (PixyJunket)

==============================

This guide covers jewel creation for the PS2 remix of Tales of Destiny. It is
primarily designed as a brief explanation of the refining process along with
charts of the various materials and what effects they have when refined into
jewels. If Bandai-Namco surprises us with an English release, this guide will
be useless as the material/jewel effects are listed in their descriptions!

The original material/jewel list was taken from the Japanese site @WIKI, so I'd
like to give them full credit for their work on that.

01. Jewel Creation
==============================

Jewels are created though the "Reraizu" [リライズ] menu option. That in itself
is a bit of Engrish, so I'll just refer to it as Refine from here on. Refining,
if you don't already know, allows you to use Lens to upgrade various items. A
"Jewel" [宝石] is created by refining raw "Material" [マテリアル]. Once a jewel
is created, it can be equipped. Each character can equip two jewels. Jewels can
then be further refined to enhance or change a secondary attribute. The
secondary attribute is simply a numeric increase to any of the base stats
(attack, defense, etc.). Each base stat is represented by a color (chart
below). When you first refine a material, you can choose from red, blue,
yellow and green. You will be presented with different color choices on each
subsequent refine based on the current color of the jewel.

For example, a Red Crsytal Poison+1 [赤晶ポイズン+1] prevents poison status
as well as giving a +10 bonus to that character's attack stat.

Mary as a Support Character will randomly upgrade the levels of already created
jewels (equipped or not). Their color will remain the same through this method.

I'll also provide a step-by-step "How To" in case anyone needs it:

1. Choose Refine [リライズ] from the main menu.
2. Choose a Poison Material [ポイズンマテリアル] from your material list (they
will be listed under the "gel/gummi" icon).
3. Choose Red Crystal Poison+1 [赤晶ポイズン+1] from the four options. The
Lens required will be listed in the text box below along with a "party
level" requirement (if not exceeded). Basically, if you see a red number in
the text box, you'll need to level up that many times.
4. Voila! You can now equip it or further refine this jewel through the same
process by choosing this jewel from the Refine menu instead of the material.

------------------------------
Jewel Color Chart
------------------------------

[赤晶] Red Crystal    = [攻撃力]   Attack
[青晶] Blue Crystal   = [防御力]   Defense
[黄晶] Yellow Crystal = [術攻撃力] Magic Attack

[白晶] White Crystal  = [体力]     Physical Strength
[黒晶] Black Crystal  = [命中率]   Hit Rate
[紫晶] Purple Crystal = [集中力]   Concentration

Is there a reason there aren't any skits with Igtenos? I just finished Coudius and I can't recall a single one yet. It just seemed odd since the other Swordians are so chatty.

Igtenos is kinda like Garr isn't he?  Would you want to see a skit with two Garrs talking?  Does Garr even talk that much?
