I apologize if this question is answered somewhere or if it's something I should already know.  I was curious if the save data I currently have will work with the someday-to-be-patched game.  Is anything being changed such that the save data from the unaltered game will be incompatible with the translation?

It should work. All the patch does is alter some coding, but the same basic game is still there. The save file checks if the game is the right one, and then it will let the game load the data.

After hearing Cless say something about using a save file from the Japanese version of ToP-GBA for the US version, I decided to check on that. I took the save file from my emulator for the Japanese version and changed the file name to the US version's rom file and it worked.

Basically it should work, but there may be some errors like some words remaining in Japanese. For ToD2j, Cless listed some problems that may arise if you use a file from the Japanese version with the patch. He'll probably list issues for this as well if there are any.

We're not changing the save format so they'll work fine in the patched version. About the only thing you'll need to do with an 'imported' save is fix the character names...

A few questions about the names then.  First, the default character set in the game is all caps.  In the patch, are there going to be lower-case characters for when you first enter the character's names?  Or rather, perhaps I should just ask how many changes you're planning on making to the character naming screen.  Are you planning on removing the Japanese characters altogether?

Finally, in the patched version, will it be possible to enter more then six characters when putting in a name?  The game as it is now is set to accept either 6 characters, which works fine for names spelled in Katakana and well, anyone except for Chester really...  So are there any plans to change that?

The more than six characters has been done already. No more naming Chester, CHESTA. Lower case letters have been already too so no more naming Cless in Caps. However I am unsure if they removed the Japanese characters or not.

I see.  Thanks for the info, though sorry if it's something I could have already read somewhere else...
