The game when released back on the SFC was simply the most stunning RPG on the system. The graphics were gorgeous , the music was beautiful, the story was memorable and there was plenty on content on the game itself. The gameplay whilst not up to par with the later games, was quite entertaining back in the time and the action based battle system was much more interesting then the typical turn based system found in most RPGs. Like Oshaberi Parodius, it also featured voice acting and lyrics in music which was somewhat mind breaking at the time.
The remake for the PSOne further enhances these features. The graphics haven't changed much but changed the main cast graphics so that they would match the artwork properly. The battle system has been improved and is no longer as stiff as the SFC version, it also further removes this stiffness with the addition of a manual mode. There is also a lot more voice acting in the game and some special movie sequences which add some form of an emotional impact on the player. Finally additional side quests, higher level cap and stronger monsters help boost the game's replay value.
When compared to the other Tales games it simply remains constant, Tales of Phantasia clearly has the best plot in the series. Destiny may come close with its fantastic cast but Phantasia has both a great cast and a great storyline. It also has far better music then the other games in the series as well. Eternia and Destiny has AWFUL music in comparison to Tales of Phantasia (Eternia in particular) and I'm one of those people who believe music plays an important role in an RPG. It helps set the mood of the story.
Tales of Phantasia remians to this day my favorite game in the series. Though I havn't played many Tales games. The only others I have played thus far are Destiny, some of Destiny 2, Symphonia and Eternia.
... Why do I have a feeling this post made no sense =(

I second that.
As for why I like ToP, because Cless kicks ass. Anyone agrees? >_>

Well the reason I like ToP so much, is I happen to be a big Klarth fan. But on the game side, I was completely amazed by the graphics and music for a snes game. Watching Cless' reflection in the water, as he crossed the bridge outside his house for the first time, my reaction was, "O.O Wow..."

My first experience with Tales of Phantasia? The GBA version. I shit you not, the GBA version. I had previously come to the website "tales-cless.org" for the "FFIII>FFVI title screen" patch. I hadn't checked out much of anything else. So, I knew the game existed, but I didn't know its name. Later on in life, Dragonsbrethren made the "Tales of Phantasia EU GBA font patch." I kept accessing his forum via the main page, and after seeing that update sit there for a while, I figured "What the hell, why not." I downloaded the game as well as the font patch and Kajitani-Eizan's text patch, and was blown away. And you know what I thought of it?
"This game
kicks ass
!!!" I was impressed by the voice acting, the battle system, the fact that the Customize menu just gave you so many
choices
, the story, the catchy music... It made my head spin. I loved it. "Wait, you dumbass!
Lots
of GBA games have VAing!" I know, I know. But I had only previously encountered voice acting in games that used a disk format, not to mention I'm easily impressed. It wasn't until later had I discovered the GBA version was the worst version of the emulatable trio. So I tried out the SNES version. And you know what I thought of it?
"This game
sucks ass
!!!" Sure, I could understand the technical improvements for the SNES, but seriously. It was so damned clunky and evil. It's like the game
wanted
you to lose every battle. "Oh, we have spell-pausing, but you can still get your ass kicked while it pans back to your summoner who's crying out 'Shiruf!'" Bah. At any rate... I downloaded the PS1 version, still in Japanese at the time, and loved it. I finally beat it when it was translated, finally. Basically, I fell in love with everything from day one, like I did with "Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu." It's hard to explain. I just love all of my games--Bahamut Lagoon, Beyond the Beyond, Breath of Fire I-IV, Chrono Trigger/Cross, Dragon Quest I-VII, EarthBound (Zero), Final Fantasy I-IX, Legend of the Dragoon, Lufia: TFOD/: RotS/: LTR, Secret/Sword of Mana, Seiken Densetsu 3, Tales of Destiny/Eternia/Phantasia, Wild ARMs 1 & 2... I'm a rare breed of gamer in the world, it seems
As a side note/afterthought, I can now play all three computer-emulatable versions of Phantasia on my computer and actively switch between them (Which I'm currently doing >_>) I love all versions of ToP. It's that simple. I have no idea why anyone can think one version is inferior to the other--Each version has something different to offer (Though this is a bit hypocritical on my part, as I like the PS1 version of ToP best
).

Umm I think GBA version voice acting and music was not as impressive as the SNES, wait which one are you referring to the JP one or the dub one?. Anyways either one is horrendous because it was so staticy ; though its the original music I think the GBA version is the worst out of all the version. The dub version just makes my ears bleed when I hear it, and not only the VA but so much lag. The game was so disappointing that it makes me want to form a riot and go to Namco and burn down whoever screwed up my favorite tales series.

I think you just suck that all, TOP Snes is the first tales game and it had not the best combo system but a Unique battle system. The game is not as hard and not slow ass the GBA version. The best trick to the TOP Snes game for the caster or actually for any tales game is to have them cast only the best skill or summon and the rest just disable it. As for Mint just tell her to cast Nurse and manually control her to cast Resurrection if needed. Furthermore have the caster wear Mystical Rune if your complaining about slow casting it half their spell casting. And for Cless give him Nightmare Boots to speed up his movement by half

indeed because Tales PP took 10year approximately and I am looking forward to it when it release, good job and credits go to Cless and co.

i still love the ToP SFC battle system to this day. cless's hyperactive running back and forth is pretty, well, hyperactive, and it's sort of interesting how much damage he avoids by doing that.

Right, but this was my
first
experience, mind you. I had no idea that an SNES Phantasia even
existed
at this point. It wasn't until after I started hunting the Internet did I find out that GBA ToP = teh suxxorz.

HOW DID YOU FIND OUT ABOUT MY DAY JOB!?!?!?

This is true. I like all three of the computer-emulatable Phantasias, as I think I summed up in in my ending sidenote.

The game is not as hard and not slow as the GBA version.
This is also true, although before I mastered the SNES version's LMB, I liked the slower battles of the GBA version better, as they were more "lol ur a nub" friendly.
Now, I'd have to say it
is
easy--You don't have to manage your allies as much as later versions (And plus, the GBA version has all those complicated commands for battle).

Whoa whoa whoa, thanks for the strategies, but I know how to play the game. No, really, I appreciate your help, but I can manage on my own. The casting
itself
isn't slow, but the transition from Cless to a mage is. See, say you're fighting a Bugbear. Mint decides she wants to cast Deep Mist (for whatever reason). The screen starts to pan back to Mint for a transition, but the fight of Cless vs. Bugbear continues for a few seconds (Leaving Cless's defenses open to attacks and being stunned) before she cries out and the textbox displays "Deep Mist."
