Tales of Phantasia Engine

Well i'm just wondering, and i'd appreciate not being flammed for asking
. Is there a Tales Engine that people can screw around with that someone made? Or Cless, do you ever plan to make one since you seem pretty good with reverse engineering and whatnot. I realize it's a big task if there isn't one, but i think having a Tales Engine would be pretty cool to use instead of some crappy RPG Maker XP and so forth engine.

I know there's an RPG-Maker-like thing for fighting games that people sometimes make Tales-themed fighting games with, but I'm not sure what it is (Fighter Maker? Mugen?), and there's nothing to make an actual Tales-style RPG. You might try Game Maker?
But, arggh, I've seen people ask this before, and it always gives me this hard-to-supress urge to see if I could program the basic structure of a Tales game in Flash. If I was able to do so and put the .fla for download, someone who's not a total failure at programming could edit it to create an actual game... if they Flash... which costs $700 if you want to get it legally. >_>; Well, if anyone's interested, I'll put it on my to do list. I need actionscript practice, so I can justify spending time on it (starting in a few months).

Cyllya predicts:
--Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World will reveal that Ratatosk was involved in ToS's last required scene in Heimdall.
--Tales of Vesperia's plot will involve space aliens in some way

I use it.
The Verge coding language may be a bit crude, but it is pretty flexible. With a bit of work, I can see someone putting together a Tales battle engine with it.

Yeah it's Called M.U.G.E.N i can't remember what it stands for. But it's interesting i played as Cless and 2 other Tales characters but it bored me pretty quickly. Unfortunately i couldn't even begin to help, i have used RPG Maker XP it isn't a bad program but unless you know a ton of Ruby Script it's really a waste of time. As for Game Maker, i did take a look at it, at one point i'm not sure why i didn't try it. Maybe i thought at the time it looked too much like RPG Maker XP, if you ever used RPG Maker XP when you walk around it just doesn't feel right a very generic feel too it, I'd love to get a hold of a Tales engine or a Ys engine.
As for Verge i didn't like the look of it at all, i could probably make a non RPG game easier with RPG Maker XP but thanks for mentioning it.
I've heard some good things about your work Cyllya. So if you ever do anything like making a Tales engine i wish you luck.

VERGE is probably the best and most flexible engine that I've seen, especially for RPGs. Sad it's not more popular than it is. Seemed very capable in its version 2 form, not sure what's new in VERGE 3 aside from better color and higher resolution modes.
I haven't been a part of the VERGE scene since 1999/2000, though. I lost my crappy game in a hard disk format and really decided I didn't have what it takes to make a good game from scratch anyhow, and went back to hacking and translating commercial games...

Mugen is really really bad imo. I prefer Fighter Maker. It's alot easier compared to Mugen, and is actual pretty fun.

Where can you find tutorials and stuff for Fighter Maker? I have the program here but I'm completely lost at what I'm doing....XD

I'm not really sure. I actually learned how to work with Fighter Maker on my own...technically. I was browsing through the game "Cross Calibur" (Fan made tales of fighting game) and I kinda got the hang of it. Just kinda browse around for that and look how moves work, you'll catch on quickly.

About Verge, it's going great. The last version added Lua as an alternative language to the native VergeC, and the map/entitie system has advanced a lot since the times of Verge 2

I looked around in it as well for a bit, but I got lost. :x
Maybe it's because I'm just used to other game developing software...XD
I'll try looking around it again and start messing with things more when I have more time.

I still find it amazing how a few color changes in graphics in FM can make the attak graphics look 3D

It really depends on the system you plan to make the game for. If, for instance, you'd like to create a game for the psp, you'd have to code in C, which means you'd have to start from scratch, while a pc gives you more options.
I personally love to use C, because you create all the code yourself, so you can optimize your program a lot better.
