there's still hope for a possible 2006 release in some very non-final form...
throwing in the gba version script with some mods as a placeholder until we get a true blue psx script translation might not be as a difficult as i thought. of course exclusive text boxes to the psx version wouldn't be translated...
all i need is the script dumper and inserter utilities finished (being worked on at the moment), the dialogue line-letter limit fixed (hopefully being worked on), and some other small cosmetic asm hacks that are beyond my reach to get worked on, and that's it!! top psx will finally be playable in english, if incomplete, with some text boxes here and there being empty (or some kind of text signifying an untranslated box)...
we'll see...
EDIT: On second thought, maybe this idea isn't a good one. As I copy over the GBA script for testing, well... let's just say I'm running into a LOT more dialogue holes than I was expecting. The PSX version has a lot more text boxes than the GBA version does.
And also, these scripts seem way different...

Mmm...
So, say, Cless, anything that is missing for a very early pre-alpha version is the script??
Aside form the differences beween the scripts, using the GBA one may be a bad idea also for legal reasons, if you think so. You even have Nintendo on that case, and sometimes is not a good idea to become involved in that kind of problems...

It doesn't surprise me that the PSX version has more dialogue and text boxes. ToP-GBA probably used the same (or very similar) script to the original SFC version. ...I bet someone out there will confirm this.
As for using the ToP-GBA script for legal reasons... It doesn't sound like a bad idea, but.. the way I look at it, if any legal action is taken against Cless for the translation, I don't think using the GBA script will really change anything, because there are tons of gaps and stuff. Still, seeing as how Cless is not distributing the game itself, I don't know if anyone actually has cause to take legal action against him. If that was the case, many a hacker and fan-translator out there would have lawsuits against them. ^_^;

As much as I want to see this patch released sooner rather then later, I have to say, I'm not a big fan of using the GBA script as a place-holder. There are a pretty significant number of differences from GBA to PSX, and if you're going to release an incomplete patch such as that, I almost feel like you would be better off releasing it just as a menu patch to begin with. I mean having a partial or even not including the English script is one thing, but having an incorrect one seems to be a bad choice. So
If you're going to use the GBA script, seems like you would be better off talking to Cyllya or getting a rough fan-translation from some of the forum members here. Maybe I'm just saying that because I've been interested in helping, but I just feel like you've got a good number of options that don't require falling back on the GBA script. Like others have said, I don't think it's so much a legal issue as it is a quality and accuracy issue.
Plus, if worst comes to worst, putting off the release of the patch for awhile longer until you get a real script isn't going to kill anyone. So as always, whatever best suits your interests is probably your best call.

I'm pretty sure I've already mentioned that the GBA one does use the SFC script. Although might I check oer this myself too, just to make sure.

Yeah, I second this too. Your lucky we're a patient bunch unlike some other places I know.

Well, maybe I should post this. This is a script dump of all the text that occurs in the exterior of Totus village, matching up the GBA script as best as I was able. You can all see for yourselves how hard it would be to seamlessly integrate it. All lines with ?? underneath are the major holes. And anyone that can read the Japanese even at a basic level can that some of the conversations seem a little different.

Erm, I dunno if you were looking for this kinda thing, but I'd fix some of the sentences a lil. They lack emotion. Try using an exclamation point here or there.
Btw, this is by no means critizing your work, I just thought you'd want some C&C

He said it was a script dump, so that means it's from the game itself, Cless didn't make that stuff himself

OH, my bad. I confused myself. I thought it was what Cless was putting into the translation.

I haven't checked in on this for a while, and I must say it's awesome to see all this progress being made. If you ask me, an insertion of the gba script would be pretty interesting actually, as a proof of concept if nothing else.

The problem is the dialogue holes. But I think you can hack them off too.
I would want to see the true blue PSX script though, so I'll keep on waiting. At least we're a tame, patient bunch, unlike the guys on Mother3.org >_>

I feel like a goat like now, I had a friend who could read and speak Japanese, almost fluently. I'll keep my eyes open for some kind of aid for you guys for the story translation. I too have been introduced to the ps1 version, and now want to see this patch complete.

Cless, I'm just curious, how difficult is it to get a script dump out of ToP PSX?
I'm asking this mostly out of interest and out of selfishness (since I'm attempting to do a simple translation of the main script). My current method of translating is rather inefficient and I'm looking for any way to speed myself up. Is getting a text dump from the game something that requires a good deal of programming knowledge? If so, I'll just stick with my current method, but if there's any way that an amateur could do it, it would be a huge help to me. I was just wondering, so thanks for any info you can offer.

The short answer: It would be extremely difficult for an amateur, maybe impossible. It'd still be nightmarish even for a veteran.
The long answer: Even at my own personal ability level, I'd still need a lot of external assistance in order to get to the script.
First you'll have to crack the virtual file system (VFS). A veteran rom hacker who's good at deciphering data should be able to do this. Programming experience however is necessary to extract all the files from it. Doing it by hand would be insane...
That isn't everything though. A good deal of extracted files from the VFS are actually archives that contain a bunch of related sub files. The scripts are stored in these.
Then the third and arguably most difficult thing is to get a decompressor. If you're gifted you might be able to figure it out by studying compressed files. But the most efficient way would be to find the decompression routine and translate it into a usable decompression utility. But you're screwed there if you don't know MIPS assembly.
Then you might want to find out what values represent each character used in the script. The game has around 1400 of them. And then all the special text commands. And put all of these in a table file.
After that find the files that contain the scripts and get familiar with how the game stores them. Maybe write a program to dump them all to a standard readable text file.
...it's seriously a huge mess of various prerequisite operations, as you can see.

My oh my. Thank you for the detailed answer. It's clear that getting a text dump out of the game would be far beyond my ability. And it really gives me a whole new respect for what you're up against.
I'll just keep working at my translation using my method I suppose. Given the nightmares that I'd have attempting to work at it any other way, I'll just keep transcribing the script like I have been. Slowly but surely I'll work my way through the game.
I've said it before, but I really mean it now, keep up the good work. I, and everyone else here I'm sure, really appreciate all that you're putting into this.

Those gaping dialogue holes and everything they always take out of the games I love are exactly why this game in particular needs a perfectionist translation like you're trying for. I also wish to convey my appreciation, and hope things go smoothly for the rest of your project.
