Question about Phantasia
«
on:
May 03, 2006, 02:27:19 PM »
Hello!
I'm a bit of an amateur, and I really don't understand how all this hacking stuff is done. (So please don't yell at me for being stupid!) I do, however,
really
love Tales of Phantasia(and all
Tales
games, for that matter.). My question is this: when the patch for Phantasian Productions' localization is released, will there be a way to burn a disc and play it on an actual Playstation console, or will it only be playable on a computer using an emulator? If playing it on a PS2 is possible, will I need a Japanese model, or will an American one work? I tried to find such an answer on the main website, but I didn't really see anything.
I'm sorry if this was a stupid question! Either way, I'm really looking forward to playing the game once it is finished!

An american console will work since it uses the same video mode as the Japanese model, but you'll need to use some sort of modification to play a burned image like ToP will be. The ps1 makes that fairly easy since there are all sorts of easy methods available, from plug-and-go mods to boot disks. The ps2, you'll end up using either a solder mod or something called swap magic that I think you need to alter the top cover of your ps2 to be a flip-top and then you do a swapdisk method. There are a lot of ways to go but the point is you'll need to use one of these methods to use an actual console instead of an emulator.

Swap Magic doesn't let you play burned PS1 games.

Ok, thanks...so...can somone tell me exactly what I would need to do in order to play the game on a console? Or would it just be easier to stick with the emulator? It doesn't matter either way - I'll just be glad to play the game!
Again, thank you guys for being so helpful!

Using an emulator is the cheapest method.
If you want to play on the real PS1, you need either a mod chip, swap disc, the switch trick, or various other methods.
For the older model PS2, you'll need a mod chip, no getting around that. For the new slimline, possible the cheap method of plugging a certain part may help, but I know nothing about the slimline. You could also get modchips for the slimline too I think. That's all I know.

You can disc swap on the PS2, you just need a swap disc or gameshark/action replay that's meant for PSX games. (And then just follow the usual disc swap procedure)
I know some releases of the action replay came with a "Playstation bonus AR disc", that one does the trick for most games + works fine with texture smoothing and fast loading switched on too.

Do you know of any swap discs that would do this? I have Swap Magic, but I want to play PSX imports on my PS2. I have heard things about downloadable swap cds ...

Downloadable swap disc is a myth that doesn't work.
What you need is a PSX GameShark, PSX Action Replay or evt. something like a "
Breaker Pro
"

I have a PSX Gameshark (the old, discless kind), and a PSX boot disc. Would a download-type boot disc not work in I used my Swap Magic to boot it? Hmm, maybe I'll boot my PSX boot disc with Swap Magic. Double disc swapping~! ^^

Right, well....as I said earlier...I am an amateur. I've never even played a hacked PS game before - not even on an emulator! And I'm not familiar with all of these boot disks and such, so...perhaps when the patch
is
finally released, I'd appreciate it if someone could give me a bit more detailed instructions?
(Again, sorry for being so stupid but if you guys help me out, maybe we can change that?)

the PS2 with a Swap Magic (CD), wont allow you to swap to a PSX disc, as the PS2 is expecting to be fed more PS2 data. (And before it's asked, no, there most likely is no way to start it with say a swap magic, then insert a PS2 data disc that tells the PS2 to switch to expect PSX data next instead)
What you need is what I mentioned before, a disc-type PSX action replay, game shark or evt. a breaker pro (When I mentioned it in my previous post, there was a link if you clicked on the word "breaker pro")
Works exactly for both PSX and PS2 and does the trick for PSX imports/backups.

I have a special swap disk just for PS1 games (PSX-Change), and it won't let me play Japanese PS1 games on my PS2. I keep my PS1 hooked up just to play ToP. 9_9

Cyllya predicts:
--Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World will reveal that Ratatosk was involved in ToS's last required scene in Heimdall.
--Tales of Vesperia's plot will involve space aliens in some way

Cyl, Japanese originals or backups?
I seem to recall (but not entirely sure that I remember correctly) that some early PS2 mod solutions wouldn't play import originals, so they had to backed up first to work :S

Buy breaker pro if you want to play PS1 games on your PS2. I don't see why it won't work on PS2 if it works on a PS2. However I think what Cless is planing on doing is just getting it working first however it can. Then fine tune it to actually work on systems
. This is what I remember reading from the old boards anyhow.
Hope this helps

Thanks, you guys!
One more question
How would one go about burning the game to a disc? Is there anything special that I need to know/do?
Talking about this makes me want to play the game!!! I can't wait!
