Leave the orb blank, that visually translates to void better than anything else ever could.

I'd be in favor of the idea of leaving the orb blank if it didn't create the feeling that it was blatantly forgotten.

But pokemon did that for "Normal" element and I didn't see a problem with that.

Make the orb a black colour maybe.

Well let's say Pokémon and Tales of Phantasia are two very different things

No They're exactly the same. What are you talking about? One has tiny animals you USE to kill and the other just has you kill tiny animals. GOD. lol I kid you.

Okay, it's truly time to wrap this up today. I've been inserting some suggestions into the game and seeing how they appear in context. I'm not finished yet, but here are the ones I've done so far.

X frequently stands for "unknown," but I think the meaning could be stretched to work for "nothing."

I liked this icon in the drawing but in context it's a bit jarring seeing that it hits the edge in all four corners. :/

A "prohibited" sign can also stand for "no." That was the point of this idea.

I also thought this looked fine in the original image (even though it wasn't a perfect circle to begin with). But, for some reason, being inside the orb seems to highlight the irregular shape, at least to me. Sad

A blank orb, within an orb. I suppose this is the best alternative to leaving the thing blank.

Okay, it's official. We're going with the orb-in-orb for void/non-element.

I also created a modified set with all icons filled in (except wind). At the moment it doesn't mean I'm going to use them, though, as they might need some refining. Here they are, though:

I think it makes the Earth mountain a bit a more... visible? Not really sure I'm feeling the color I used for the glare on the Void orb and Water droplet, though. kinda hard to see. but then, glares do things like that...

To me the shadow one looks more like a void. =/ I associate black holes with void more than shadow/dark. I do like the orb in the orb idea for void, but I'd suggest using something else for dark. Someone posted a pentagram-type symbol a while back. I think that suggests darkness better. *shrug*

Earth: Looks way better.
Water: Mixed feelings. Like how it looks, miss the transparent water feel. But it looks great anyway.
Thunder: Better
The little bastard (Void): With orb-in-orb... I kind of imagined the inside orb darker but I have no idea about the limitations you have there. The thing is that when you have a circle in such low pixels you could try to make it blend a little bit with the background so the border pixels are less noticeable.

Anyway, I'm glad you're making a decision on this.

The filled water one is the one I'm really feeling the least. It looks more an ice drop than a water drop, to me. I'm going to change it back. The others at least seem like an improvement.

Filled is the closest thing we can do. While each orb has eight possible colors, they are used for the shading effect-- one set of four shades for the orb itself and four shades for the icon. If they weren't going for glossy effects in the Monster List menu I'd have been more open to the idea of using all eight colors for extra details. If we had changed the palettes that way, the glossy effect would probably look more like a flashing effect.

Just a little thing, I feel that the colors for the thunder orb looked better before.

It's probably just the glossy effect being at a different luminosity than the previous screen.

I am just saying that the orb thing is used in both games for different elements so I figured I could use it as an example for the blank-orb thing to show that it has been used in another commercial game before, I AM NOT COMPARING THE TALES GAMES TO POKEMON.

Man, that transparent box was a really cool idea.  Would have commented earlier, but vacation seemed more important at the time.

Regardless, I'm quite pleased with the icon choices for the orbs, and not just because my reworking of one of demon's icons was chosen.  Good show.

PS: Sorry Gogs, I couldn't agree with what you felt void was, it will always be non-elemental to me.  Maybe if there was a bigger precedent for your "spiritualism" take on it in the games I had remembered playing.....Although the orb within the orb seems to work, right?
