I don't know if this is common knowledge, but while testing something that could've been a perceived bug, I found that you must encounter all of Dhaos' forms in order to have Klarth earn a title for encountering all enemies.

If someone played the original game in Japanese and somehow managed to get their Monster List to 100% on the first playthrough, it would probably be incredibly confusing for the player to not get the title, especially if they are aware of its existence.

So, adding Dhaos eliminates this potential confusion, because it's not possible to earn the title during a first playthrough.

A useless bit I've learned: The game tracks every unique monster encounter. The game even checks off that you've "encountered" Dhaos during the prologue battle (and mildly interestingly, the game doesn't count this encounter for Klarth's title). On the other hand, this useless info also tells me that the alphabetized Monster List will not display incorrect results on a save originally used for the Japanese version.

Well done.  You've progressed from straight localization to marked improvement in short order.

No up to 4 is possible already. Still needs the channel ring so maybe Cless can get that requirement away (I thought he already mentioned it before, but that was only for manual instead semi-auto).

That's a great thing to hear. This is going to be so cool once it's released, I'll have a party and we'll play ToS and ToP all night. O.o Weekend long party? I must do this!

The name "DOOM" for the difficulty is a placeholder, right? It looks strange compared to everything else that looks professionally done. Tongue
Might I suggest using the Tales of Destiny 2 names for difficulty? Normal->Second->Hard->Mania->Unknown?

Though I never really liked "Second" either. :x

And would it be difficult to add a option in the menu to access the Sound Test at any time? Though I imagine this might have some problems restoring the music on the map you were on...

I know you just said you don't like Second, but I second the notion of DOOM possibly not being the best name choice. Maybe it being in all caps is the turn off, but even something cliche'd like Hell or Crazy looks better next to the other modes. Then again, its just my opinion. I haven't hacked at anything that isn't wood, so I suppose my opinion is worth less, or maybe even worthless.

DOOM is in caps for effect. And the name has kind of stuck and I don't have any intentions of changing it to anything else.

I have a rather mixed opinion about the "DOOM" thing.

It's the whole "Wow, all caps and an odd name! That doesn't look too nice"

But it is not something that in any way should harm the first impression, as those of you who are following every single screenshot and word of progress should keep in mind that it'll only be there for those who end up doing a second playthrough.
(Or in probably a few odd cases; those who start out by kidnapping a clear file from someone else, allowing them to start out like that from the start.)

The name is very direct and self explaining. It does not jump into any questionable grounds when it comes to what type of words one would actually use in a localized product of today.
However, I'm sure that if by some magical turn of events, a better name someplace down the road would show up, I wouldn't say it's unlikely that Cless would give it a second thought and change his mind.
(I've seen it happen!)

Anyway, any negative thoughts about this name and its appearance (for now) is what I certainly would call a minor issue (For the reason explained above).
And I guess you could somewhat compare it to... say... something like the secret hi-res mode in God of War II (NTSC only), which gives the game a tiny performance loss, but allows the game to look much better.

I'm obviously pretty new around here, but you raise a pretty good point about it being a minor issue. Plus, from what I've read and figured out, Cless himself is the only person who's been involved in the project without doing a disappearing act. If I'm wrong about that, sorry if I've offended anyone. But yeah, his project, his opinion, his decision, right? The DOOM thing was the only part of any of his additions, touch ups, changes, or anything that I even had the slightest qualm with at all. If I seemed to be overly critical over something like that, sorry. If I haven't made it obvious enough, I'm impressed by this whole project. Oh, and Cless's good taste.

Edit : Also, God of War II kicked ass.

Am I the only one who noticed that, when you start the game from either a cold start or a hard reset, find that the monster list/zukan always opened up to monster #5 being displayed, if you had encountered it?

This stupid little thing always seemed weird and kinda bothered me. Most people probably don't care about this, but I tracked down the cause. I've hacked this so it'll now start at the more sensible monster #1 in our hack (after you've encountered it, obviously).

Man, monster list, you're SO annoying.

There's this feature where the name of the menu is is supposed to sound bigger as you fill it up. i.e. Monster List -> Big Monster List -> Mega Monster List... etc.

I was about to cut it from the game because of screen space reasons. But we managed to find a clever way to word each tier.

So then we add the new names for each tier, only to find the code that selects the appropriate menu name is COMPLETELY, AND UTTERLY BROKEN. This isn't a fault of our hack, it's a problem with the original game. For example-- the third tier name will only appear if you've encountered exactly 100 monsters. Then the broken code will go back to the level 1 tier menu name right after that.

I'm looking into a solution right now, and I think I have one.

The bug is fixed and this feature now works as I believe it was intended.

A fantranslation fixing a nearly 10 year's old game's bugs, how great is that? At this rate you should release a fixes patch for Japanese gamers as well. Grin

Anyway, I'm convinced the 5th tier difficulty is impossible, but we'll see what happens in the hand of a truly hardcore Tales player, I guess. I'm actually not that good at these games, if you can believe that.
I'm not sure if I qualify as a "hardcore Tales player," but this does sound fun...
