Wow, that was a month ago, I was completely unaware. Anyway, that wraps it up for the fansub. When I get my computer in working order, the torrents are going down.

I'm still committed to finishing the script someday, though. So if you get a raw, you can watch it with vsfilter or something...

Seems a bit fishy to me...this was posted some time ago. Wouldn't we have heard some official details by now? I must admit, though, it seems really interesting - perhaps I'll be able to focus on the OVA itself, rather than the subtitles at the bottom!

At least this link clears up that the Tales of Phantasia OVA is coming.  It certainly got my attention and was nice to hear.  I also know I'm going to end up getting it (Though I get a bad feeling it's going to be one episode per disc, just like how it was released in Japan).

Well, with just that link it would seem fishy. And it does seem a little weird that more news of it hasn't been spread. But... I guess it is official. it says here that "Galaxy Anime is reporting that Geneon has licensed the Tales of Phantasia OAV for release in the United States. " I guess no dates have been set, though, because I couldn't find anything past the fact that it's gonna be released in the US.

Eh... I was looking forward to Cless' fansub of Episode 4. Oh well, I guess. ^_^;

News more than a year old and there is no Geneon official opinion on it?? And no update, also.
It really seems VERY fishy to me.
Better check it out a little before stopping the project for it.

I don't know what's so fishy about an official VA basically saying his NDA has been lifted and that he has been cast to play one of the characters. Seems rather credible to me.

Hmm... I dunno the source seems to be unreliable if you ask me. But then again all blogs looks unreliable >_>

Wait a minute.... you were waiting for a perfect moment like this so you can ditch translate the horrid 4th episode! You sly old dog!

Still even if it is made in blog by an official VA you can't really call it official until everyone is going around gaping their mouths because of official articles.

I agree. I wouldn't stop translation and subbing the 4th episode until it was clear that it was official. I've tried and tried to find an official announcement from Geneon that they are, in fact, releasing the OVA in the US, but I can't. I can only find sources saying that Galaxy Anime has stated that Geneon has licensed it. But apparently Genon itself has made no announcement and hasn't commented on the news, either.

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/article.php?id=6630 has the announcement that Geneon lincensed ToP: The Animation, but the article is dated 2005-05-11. And since then, there's been no official announcement or any more news from Geneon or anyone else? That doesn't seem right to me.

I honestly wouldn't put all my faith in a blog, either, even one from a VA. I dunno if anyone else has followed the developments of the Evangelion Movie, but voice actors from ADV (mainly Tiffany Grant) released "official" news concerning the movie after its announcement. Concept art also showed "official" names for the characters. This was all patched up in due time, of course. My point is, unless it comes directly from Geneon, I wouldn't trust it.  Undecided

I realize this isn't going to carry any more verifiable weight than my original blog posting with the folks who are thinking it all sounds fishy, but I can assure you, "Tales of Phantasia" has been dubbed.  It was already in the can when I posted about it in mid-August.

Hi Patrick. I believe you. Our distributed project is still going down as soon as I get my bad hard disk replaced. It'd be nice if Geneon gets some kind of press release out soon, though.

Also, I tend to love NGP dubs (RoD TV was amazing), so I'm sure it'll turn out great. Also very excited about Valkyrie Profile 2.

Too bad Namco chose the super cheap route when it came to dubbing the Tales of Phantasia GBA game.

Thanks for the vote of confidence.  Actually, though, it's not a NGP dub--it's Bang Zoom (my first time directing for them).

I'm excited about VP2, as well.  I'm usually too cheap to buy games new, but for this one, I think I'm going to make an exception!

I'm suprised there hasn't been any word at all on this in the last year, though I'm willing to believe that it's true.  I'm glad that Geneon has it, they're far and away my favorite licensing company and their releases never let me down.

All of this talk has left me with two thoughts though.
1) How is this going to be released?  I can't imagine that it'll be on 4 discs like it was in Japan, the US anime market just doesn't put up with that kind of thing, at least not from what I've seen.  I wouldn't mind buying two discs though.

2) Was it really a wise decision to dub the Tales of Phantasia OVA at all?  Unless I'm misinformed, I've always been under the impression that dubbing anime is one of the more significant financial costs of releasing an anime in R1.  Thus, why there have been many of these 'niche' type series released in Sub Only boxsets.  Now, don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed the ToP OVA.  But I have to recognize that it is primarily a 'fanservice' type production (I mean to say that it's something that only fans of ToP can really enjoy).  It isn't a stand-alone OVA, it assumes that you've played the games and thus it really won't make much sense to most viewers, especially considering how poorly Tales of Phantasia GBA sold.  It just seems like out of the already small anime fandom, there are even fewer who are ToP fans, and even fewer of those people who would actually purchase this OVA.  I don't know, to put money behind a dub just seems like risky business to me, regardless of how good it may turn out.  But who knows, maybe I'm looking at this all wrong.

In any case, I personally will be picking it up, so I look forward to seeing how everything turned out.

While I'm happy that the ToP OVA is coming States-side, I agree with everyone who says it sounds fishy. Frankly, I'd wait some more and see what Geneon offically says before axing the fan-sub project. I've been looking forward to episode 4 for ages now! Don't disappoint me, Cless!
