Shinsen-subs are good
yeah, at weeaboo pandering, but not at putting out a professional sub.

Sorry I know my subbers and I probably watch more anime then you
not likely, considering I spend a good 12-14 hours a day doing it. That or posting/lurking on /a/.
Shinsen is only good for people who don't want an actual localization in their subs. I was absolutely disgusted by their job in Kara no Kyoukai.

Anyways Craymel you can try gg Fansubs; they arent so bad either.
gg are alright, but they are notorious for how they like to troll.

This is the only reason code geass r2 was as enjoyable as it was for me

this is exactly what i heard about "shitsen", but ToA seems to be going well. they're actually trying to go by the localization and everything. my only real complaint is the HUEG and somewhat stylized dialogue font. (well, and like 15 nitpicks i posted in their comments, but they're not quite as major as the number fifteen makes it sound.) i'm not sure on the audio; it does sound very slightly more aliased than osu's, but i'm not sure if that's due to picking some shitty bitrate or just that the raw's audio wasn't quite as good.
osu's has more localization flubs and general editing flubs. hell, you can see it from the first line! but i like that they didn't downsize the video. the 720p definitely looks slightly better.
that said, i want to also check out AC and gg... AC's silly arte display thing is incredibly ridiculous looking, though. their raw or their encoding looks pretty bad from the screenshots, on top of the filesize being ridiculous, but i'd rather see it in motion before making any judgments.

It is. It's pretty damn huge compared to a simple rectangular translator's note box. Other than that, it seems to be a very competent sub. As you can imagine, they have the naming conventions correct. Glad most people requested American naming conventions such as Master Luke opposed to Luke-sama and Van-sensei crap that most anime viewers should know or could easily look up on their own.
A few direct translations, for example when Luke is talking to Pere, AC translates a line as "Don't tell Guy. He'll be annoying" when he's going to go off somewhere. It's more of a nitpick of one instance however, but I liked the liberty Osu took in translating it as "Don't tell Guy, he'll tell everyone." Not to say AC doesn't take some liberties as well (feels like more than other groups to me actually), they do take some to make the dialogue sound more like natural English. I particularly noticed it when they have Luke say "Master Van, let's begin, please!" for 宜しくお願いします instead of Osu's direct "Master Van, please take care of me." Also when Tear yells 覚悟 twice, they don't make her repeat the same phrase, instead "Prepare to die" for the first occurrence and "Die" for the second.
I was noticing a little less color saturation with Osu's subs. Weib had better saturation, but more localization flubs as you would put it. Both are high quality TV rips. I notice more color saturation with AC's compared to Osu, but a noticeable amount of graininess/artifacting compared to Osu/Weib. It could be ignored, though I still notice it sometimes when watching.
The arte display is annoying but I can ignore that. If they just got some higher quality raws/encoding, I'd be completely sold on them. I still recommend them anyway though.

after checking all of them, i'm going to have to endorse
gg
and
shinsen
for now. shinsen's writing is definitely the best, but the HUEG fonts, smaller resolution, possibly lowered audio quality, etc. may not appeal to you as much. gg is excellent all around, and they did catch more game terms overall than shinsen. (light of the sacred flame being the only one they flubbed, iirc.)
so basically, if gg got the shinsen guys to do a final pass edit on their scripts, the quality would be OVER 9000!!!11/10.

thats good to know. Time to stop wasting bandwidth now
Edit: Kay now that I've actually seen episode 1 & 2 I'm going to stop ignoring an issue I have with the animation. To me it feels like the proportions of the characters (especially their faces) are awkward and inconsistent. It has become obvious that sunrise doesn't have their most talented teams on abyss. Other then that I'm good (cept for Luke's voice). I'm loving Tear's VA right now. Yukana also did C.C.'s voice for code geass and I'm a big fan now. I'm looking forward to watching this.
