Geneon USA, the company that licensed the series, is dead (unfortunately. They were my favorite US anime company, afterall). Anyway, it's unknown if they'll return in any form. So while the licensing is in limbo we could possibly revive the project, maybe revise the three released episodes, and finally put out the fourth.

But I don't know if there's really any point in doing it. I never did pick up the official US DVD, but I was confident Geneon did a pretty solid, if not spectacular job with it.

On the other hand, it just feels funny that we never put out the final episode. Nothing is concrete, but ep 4 was so close to being finished anyway. *shrug*

I would love to see a revision of the OVAs as well as see episode four subbed by Phantasian Productions. Smiley

Oh and btw, the ToE anime sucked, please don't waste your time trying to sub it. I doubt you would be able to find HQ raws anyways. >__<

I did, and they seem to have done everything up to my (rather high) standards. In fact, I ended up buying some Rozen Maiden DVDs when Geneon USA picked that series up. I got 4 out of 6 before they died. I always seem to come in too late.

I'd still like to see that. Geneon did the best job they could, but their subtitled version was always going to be hampered by the quite basic subtitling available on the DVD video format. Fansubs aren't limited by that.

Oh please do so. I preferred your subs more than any other's. And the DVD was okay. I guess.

I never knew Geneon was dead O_o

I'd say you should have a look at the upcoming Japanese Blu-ray release of the Tales of Phantasia and Tales of Symphonia OVAs before making any decisions on a possible future revival. (yeah, yeah... Know this topic dates back to January)

Even though Phantasia appears to only be upscaled from a Standard Definition source, I guess the image quality is better as the video source will most likely be a higher bitrate 23.97 progressive source than the 30 fps interlaced telecined DVD version. (Symphonia on the other hand seems to be a full proper HD transfer)

I didn't even know the phantasia ova's were licensed or being licensed in the first place Shocked. If you are gonna revive the project how will you release them meaning what containers would you use, hardsub, softsub? Personally I prefer fully softsub mkv h264 releases myself.

I'm pretty uncertain at this point now, anyway. Geneon's not actually dead, they just didn't have any deals with distributors (in a nutshell I guess. I'm sure it's a little more complicated than that, with Dentsu pulling out on them). At AX it was announced that FUNimation would start redistributing some of Geneon's titles beginning in August. I don't know if ToP is part of that deal, though...

But maybe releasing those scripts I promised ages ago could still come to light.
