Oops, I made a mistake in the widths. W, M, w, and m are actually only 6 pixels wide, not 8. Guess I confused myself... I'll reply to the rest of your post in a bit.

EDIT: Uppercase T is 6 as well.

The m/w is great, allows "Costume Artist" and "Sword Goddess" to fit. But with T=6, we need to fix Demon Trainer. X( I guess Demon Tamer makes more sense anyway.

Squire
--Note: Apprentice Swordsman is long and bleh. If Kenshi=Knight (see below), this one might as well be Squire.

I am using "Apprentice" for Cless' identical title in ToP PSX and would prefer it to stay that way. The description can be used to clarify context.

Knight
--Note: I know kenshi doesn't mean knight, but there's lots of precedent for that trans (as in, kenshi does mean the RPG definition of knight), and I don't like the word Fencer, and I figure people would gripe about Mel being called a swordsman more than about her being called a knight (despite the fact that swordsman is technically a unisex term while I'm pretty sure there's no such thing as a female knight). Knight also sounds better with the other costume names that include the word kenshi, and knight is the official trans of the costume.

Approved.

Sword Master (63 px)
--Note: The official trans for this costume is Master Fencer.

Go with the official.

Grappler
--Note: Don't like this one. Can't think of anything better. The name means "assistant instructor," um, of a martial arts dojo I guess. There was an enemy in ToP PSX/GBA called this. It looked like the kenshi costume though.

I know! "Right Hand Man"... j/k. Nice horrible pun there. Tongue

There's also Brawler, or Scrapper...

Anyway, an enemy by that name doesn't exist in the PSX list (GBA version has quite a number of new enemies, or had a bunch brought back from the SNES version that were cut or replaced in the PSX one... don't really remember).

Sumo
--Note: Sekitori is a kind of sumo wrestler or something. Also "Sumo Wrestler" makes it slightly too long, 66 px.

Sumo Wrestler will fit with the revised m/W lengths.

Thief
--Note: Touzoku means theif, but this costume, er, can't steal. Only the next one (and Suzu) can. What do you think of calling this one Rogue and the next one (おおどろぼう) Thief?
Burglar

I suppose Thief can be Rogue... but Burglar depends on the costume... is it a stereotype or not?

Big Merchant (57 px)
--Note: I don't like this name. Can't think of anything better.

Wholesaler? Leaves me with an impression of being larger than just some lowly merchant...

Gladiator (38 px)
--Note: Don't like this one either. It's a fighter/swordsman mix, like Cless or Stahn.

I say leave it...

Bolt Warrior (55 px)
--Note: This is a lightning-based fist-fighter. Thunder Master was 71 px. Thunder Champ was 66 px. Bolt Fighter was 51, but I liked it less.

Dunno yet.

Dark Eye

DARKEYE? (yes, including the question mark)

In all Japanese versions of ToP, that's how these eyes are named... in english, both words connected, and ending with a question mark, and all caps. It's sentimental I guess, but I've always liked it left that way, but all translations of the game have that stuff removed. I've left them that way in ToP PSX.

--Note: We are still using Demon for mamono, right?

I uh... don't know. I guess this one didn't hit my radar.

Reaper
--Note: It doesn't include a scythe. God of Death is 55 px, should we use that instead?

Grim Reaper seems to have a strict requirement for having a scythe, so I guess God of Death it is.

Actor
--Note: The costume looks like a "Kabuki Actor" (54 px). Even though the name isn't that specific, should we call it that instead, so people don't go "What the--? Why's this costume look like THAT?")

I suppose it's suitable for localization...

Illusionist (42 px)
--Note: This is actually magician (as in performer of magic tricks), but I was worried people would expect it to be more of a wizard. Plus the one quest that is this costume's justification for existing doesn't use it in the typical magician way, imo.

Sounds fine.

Ronin
--Note: A rounin is a masterless (wandering) samurai, which is not quite what this costume is, technically, but "Wandering Swordsman" and "Wandering Knight" are both too long. It looks similar to the samurai costume, is male only, and isn't used in any quests. Spelled as ronin, it's an accepted English word.

Go ahead.

Fisherman (42 px)
--Note: The "official" trans for this costume is Angler.

Go official.

Pac Man

PAC-MAN

Grobder
--Note: Cameo. Need spelling confirmation.

Grobda

Kagekiyo
--Note: Cameo. Is this what he's called in English?

I don't think he's in any US released games...

Sandra
--Note: Whirlo?

Who-what-where?

But with T=6, we need to fix Demon Trainer.

Well, with the lower m pixel count, it still balances back into affordable range.

Here's the attitudes. Words in parentheses are the meaning of the word without regard to space or sounding good. I am somewhat bothered by the fact that some are adjectives, some are nouns referring to the trait, and some are nouns referring to a person with that trait.

Basic Attitudes

Humble ...29 px [I hate this word]

Joker ... (Facetious, 43 px)
Playful...31 px (Mischievous, 52 px, playfulness)

Kind ...45 (Considerate, 51 px) [Concerned = 45]
Kind? (Sympathetic, 51 px)

Zealous ...32 px (Hot-Blooded)
Glamor (Glamorous(42)/Sex Appeal/Charm/Seductiveness)

Dark
Malicious ...38

Curious (Idly Curious)

Combo attitudes

Popular (Popular Person)
Charming... 38px

Cheerful (Smiling Person)
Loving (Person of Love)

Just (Sense of Justice) [Honorable and Righteous were too long]
Shy

Sulking (Peevish/Sulking/Pouting Boy)
Pouting (Peevish/Sulking/Pouting Child/Girl)

Dreamer...36 (Dreaming Boy)
Dreamer (Dreaming Girl)

Nice Boy ...34px
Nice Girl ...34px

Frivolous...39px [or Flippant... 33px] (flip; frivolous person; person who readily chimes in with others; person who gets carried away easily)
Sexy Girl... 37

Cynic (Cynicism/Sarcasm)
Huh (prankster, mischievous child)

Fool (Foolish Boy)
Fool (Foolish Girl)

Sensitive... 38px (humanity; empathy; kindness; sympathy)
Maiden

Troubled...38 px (Troubled Boy)
Troubled (Troubled Girl)

Nosy (Meddlesome, 48px)

Lil'Demon [Demon Child too long] (Child Devil)

Absurd (Absurd Boy)
Friendly? [that's the same as Kururu's tomodachi...] (term means "Everybody's friend," come off to me sounding like a bad thing. But the description is "Doesn't discriminate and treats everyone kindly. It's easy to be misunderstood, so be careful.)

Weirdo (an eccentric)
Bad Girl (Trouble-Chan)

Kururu

Friendly...32
Faithful...30
Wild

And I figured, while I'm at it, I might as well take a stab at Kururu's forms, even though it's not needed for our script translation. Here's pictures of all the Kururus, in case it's helpful. It takes up eight spaces including Kururu's name, so assuming Kruelle will still always take up 4 spaces, that's 32 pixels left including the space.

Pen Kruelle (18), PenpenKruelle (30 w/out space), or PenguinKruelle (32 w/out space)
Ukyoo Kruelle (I think it's just a squeaky animal/baby sound)
Muffin Kruelle (Not sure, it doesn't look like a muffin...)

Tail Kruelle
Horn Kruelle...don't like this one (One-horned, narwhal; ikkakujuu=unicorn)
Spine Kruelle (Thorn, spine)

Soft Kruelle (funyafunya = soft; limp; flabby)
Kruelle Bird
Kruelle Ball

Huh (er, I don't know what ponyon means... he looks like a cloud with a Star Cap)
Kruellefish
Meow Kruelle (cat sound)

Huffy Kruelle (puripuri means angrily/in a huff, but this Kruelle looks very happy... its signiture move is "ochiru niko niko" o.O)
Ammon Kruelle (30) (Ammonoid/Ammonite)
Burn Kruelle, Fire Kruelle, Flame Kruelle (Burning)

Kruelle Doll
Crabby Kruelle (Crab crab)
Star Kruelle

Sea Kruelle
Kruelledon
Shell Kruelle (I think they should have called him クルールッパ Tongue)

Giga Kruelle
View Kruelle (not sure what this means either)
Kruelle Beast

A little weird this time, but should be okay.

Quote

Here's the touzoku and oo dorobou pictures respectively.

(Hope ChangeV doesn't mind me direct-linking.)

Dorobou means burglar, and it looks like a burglar, so there's nothing wrong with calling it burglar, but I figured we should call one of them Thief. But I guess we could go with rogue and burglar.

Actually... there is one case in which the touzoku costume steals. A story event. So maybe it's okay to call it thief.

Quote
Wholesaler? Leaves me with an impression of being larger than just some lowly merchant...
Hrmm, later I'll go through the script and find the story event that uses this costume. Hopefully that'll make it easier.

Kinda weird to call it DARKEYE? when the costume name is written differently from the ToP enemy, but it's safe to assume they're supposed to be the same thing, so we might as well call it DARKEYE?.

By the way, is there a "big eye" in ToP? There's a ND1 boss called Big Eye, which bugs me. I keep wanting it to be something less stupid-sounding, like maybe Great Eye. Something that discusses serious moral dilemmas shouldn't have a stupid name.

Quote
Sandra
--Note: Whirlo?

Who-what-where?
The particular character I'm pretty sure this costume is supposed to represent was called Whirlo when his game, Sandra Daibouken, was officially translated. I'm not sure all the Valkyrie series official trans are consistent with that though. But maybe Whirlo was the trans for クリーノ or whatever instead. Maybe gogs knows for sure.

By the way, I know the official translations I mentioned because of the trading cards ChangeV scanned. I don't know whether there are other cards or what's written on them if there are...

Sword Master (63 px)
--Note: The official trans for this costume is Master Fencer.

^ Kengou can also just mean swordsman I believe.  It implies a higher level of skill certainly, but when I came across it in game, I just used Swordsman.

Grappler
--Note: Don't like this one. Can't think of anything better. The name means "assistant instructor," um, of a martial arts dojo I guess. There was an enemy in ToP PSX/GBA called this. It looked like the kenshi costume though.

^ How about using 'Black Belt' or something to keep the martial arts reference intact?

Sumo
--Note: Sekitori is a kind of sumo wrestler or something. Also "Sumo Wrestler" makes it slightly too long, 66 px.

^ Sumo Champ?

Thief
--Note: Touzoku means theif, but this costume, er, can't steal. Only the next one (and Suzu) can. What do you think of calling this one Rogue and the next one (おおどろぼう) Thief?

^ I was thinking the same thing.  The class is the dagger-using, swift type that makes me think Rogue.  I'd say make this Rogue and make the おおどろぼう be Thief.

Big Merchant (57 px)
--Note: I don't like this name. Can't think of anything better.

^ Entrepreneur maybe?  On second thought, maybe not...  You could just call the first one 'Salesman' and then make this one 'Merchant'.

Humble ...29 px [I hate this word]
Joker ... (Facetious, 43 px)
Playful...31 px (Mischievous, 52 px, playfulness)
Kind ...45 (Considerate, 51 px) [Concerned = 45]
Kind? (Sympathetic, 51 px)
Zealous ...32 px (Hot-Blooded)
Glamor (Glamorous(42)/Sex Appeal/Charm/Seductiveness)
Dark
Malicious ...38
Curious (Idly Curious)

Here's what I had used for these:
『すなお』 - Honest
Mischievous (I like your Playful better)
Thoughtful
Charming
Ill-Natured (I like your Malicious better)
Curious

Honest
(I hadn't come up with anything I liked, so your Joker works well for me)
Considerate (too long though, right?)
Fervor (I was thinking maybe something like 'Intensity' too)
Dark
Curious

I'll take a look at the Kruelle stuff and the actual names of the personalities themselves later if I get a chance.  By the way, you got all of these done really fast. O_o

--Note: The official trans for this costume is Master Fencer.

Swordsman sounds weaker than Knight though.

Well, Cless wants Master Fencer. Is that too troublesome for those times you have to refer to it?

Its belt is white though. Cheesy

Honest works for Sunao too. Can't use Charming for Oiroke because there's already a チャーミング. I like Mischievous over Playful, but the former won't fit. Sad

Thoughtful is 54px Sad

Caring fits though! We can use that for one out of Itawari or Omoiyari. But which one? XD

By the way, you got all of these done really fast. O_o
Possible reasons:
--I copy/pasted the Japanese list from Majestic Phantasian (pooey, they don't have a proper scenario item list)
--I use a kick-ass electronic dictionary.
--I'm already familiar with the terms.

some thoughts, suggestions, etc... (i did them as i saw them, before i read through the topic, so sorry if someone already mentioned some of these Tongue)

>> けんし Knight

it really ought to be Swordsman, in accordance with RM... but screw it, i suppose.

>> しはんだい Grappler

TA? Grappling TA? Judo TA? Tongue

>> せきとり Sumo

Sumo Champ? Sumo Star? Sumo Ace?

>> とうぞく Thief

just leave as thief?

>> おおどろぼう Burglar

i was going to suggest Robber, but looking at the picture... that's great Tongue

>> だいしょうにん Big Merchant (57 px)

Tycoon? Franchiser? (i like Tycoon...)

>> ほのおのけんし Flame Knight (54 px)
Gale Knight (46 px)
Holy Knight (46 px)

Swordsman, as per above.

>> かみなりとうし Bolt Warrior (55 px)

Bolt Fighter?

>> あそびにん Clown

does this look like a clown? i think the teichan ND3 site listed it (in english) as Idler; not sure if that fits at all.

>> やくしゃ Actor

should be Translator.

lol! ... yeah, Kabuki Actor sounds good.

>> うたひめ Songstress (49 px)

Pop Star? >_>

>> さすらいけんし Ronin

RUROUNI!!!!1111!!11

>> まんがか Comic Artist (55 px)

might be misinterpreted as a stand-up comedian or something? or not; i guess the prerequisite costume and the sprite probably make it clear...

>> りょうし Fisherman (42 px)

"official"? Angler sounds fine, too.

>> ギャル Gal

VALLEY GURL!!!!!11111111!

out of curiosity, what's the sprite like?

>> すなお Humble ...29 px [I hate this word]

seems more like a Honest, or something. like a wide-eyed kid?

>> ひょうきん Joker ... (Facetious, 43 px)

Funny? facetious and joker (batman begins's sequel, anyone?) both have some rather negative connotations...

>> いたわり Kind? (Sympathetic, 51 px)

ouch, hard one... Thoughtful? the other one should be kind/considerate, but this one seems more like... a kid who, say, does the dishes for his mom, especially if she looks tired that day, or somehing.

>> ねっけつ Zealous ...32 px (Hot-Blooded)

i like Zealous.

>> いじわる Malicious ...38

a little extreme? maybe Mean?

>> せいぎかん Just (Sense of Justice) [Honorable and Righteous were too long]

aww, Righteous would've been perfect, too. Virtuous? Sincere?

>> おちょうしもの Frivolous...39px [or Flippant... 33px] (flip; frivolous person; person who readily chimes in with others; person who gets carried away easily)

i like Flippant. frivolous has... connotations Tongue

>> ひにくや Cynic (Cynicism/Sarcasm)

Cynical?

>> いたずらっこ  (prankster, mischievous child)

Rascal?

>> むちゃボーイ Absurd (Absurd Boy)

Impetuous? Rash?

>> はっぽうびじん Friendly? [that's the same as Kururu's tomodachi...]

like a social butterfly? which is too long, of course... :/

>> ちゅうじつ Faithful...30

Loyal?

>> ビュークルール View Kruelle (not sure what this means either)

Failure Kruelle? (aww... :/)

>> Caring fits though! We can use that for one out of Itawari or Omoiyari. But which one? XD

i vote itawari.

Grappler
Why not use Martial Artist?
And Champion is probably something closer to Grandmaster.

Quote
There was an enemy in ToP PSX/GBA called this. It looked like the kenshi costume though.
shihan - master
shihandai - sergeant
jukuren kenshi - veteran
renjuusei - trainee
i guess their classes don't really fit here (you don't want to use theirs anyway, misreading dakutens (Jinpachi/Jinbachi and Pluto/Brute) and Ishrantu).

Magic User (48 px)
it's the root of all the ____ Mages so I suggest Mage. (matches the higher-ups better)

Wizard
Warlock? Magus? *shrug* Wizard and Witch both sound a little weak as the highest class.

I like とうぞく Thief/Rogue, おおどろぼう Burglar.

Ninja Master (57 px)
--Note: Literally "Ninja head/leader"
Ninja Lord if you want to keep the leader meaning.

Merchant
Big Merchant (57 px)
Trader (Salesman/woman requires changing) and Merchant.

Flame Knight (54 px)
Gale Knight (46 px)
Holy Knight (46 px)
Bolt Warrior (55 px)
Pyromancer, Stormcaller, Paladin, Thunderbane?
hah, too crappy or i guess only work for the mages, I dunno how much you want to keep the ___ Knight pattern. Thundermonk/Thunder Monk? Thunderblitzer?

Animal Trainer (62 px)
Demon Trainer (64 px)
I always thought one of these could be Beast Master with the whip, like those Beast Master and Hell Master monsters. (That's what these 2 costumes are sorta mimicking anyway)

God of Death
I was considering Angel of Death because God of Death seems like there's one super powerful god when it's more like grim reapers / death angels. Death Dealer, Death Agent, Death God,  Death? >_>; (the Samael monsters seem to be shinigamis?) *shrug* GoD would be ok

Ronin
use Vagabond if something happens to Ronin

PAC-MAN
Pac-Man?

Kagekiyo is in The Genji and Heike Clans, don't know if he's named.
Sandra no Daibouken is only translated in Europe and is called Whirlo. Supposedly Sandra is the name of the whole race (as they lived in Sandraland) and I think they all use it as a last name. Kurino Sandra specifically is Valkyrie's (sometimes "Walkure") apprentice/helper. His name is sometimes Xandra.

Humble ...29 px [I hate this word]
don't think it's Honest in this case. I'd use Meek, Passive or just go back to Obedient. Humble may be too positive for this. Dio could be Obedient and Mel Meek/Passive (that's if you don't mind different terms).

Joker ... (Facetious, 43 px)
I like Joker. It's supposed to be a clever kind of funny, maybe like Class Clown or Wisecracker. Witty or Comical if you want all adjs (see bottom)

Playful...31 px (Mischievous, 52 px, playfulness)
Rowdy? Rascal? (tomboyish, essential to be calm a little?)

Kind ...45 (Considerate, 51 px) [Concerned = 45]
I like Caring.

Kind? (Sympathetic, 51 px)
Something closer to Concerned/Worried (a worried/stressful concern)
Sensitive? Altruistic? Gracious? (Compassionate)
Maybe this Caring and the other Sensitive :S
(sympathizing with matters of others, that is your treasure)

Glamor (Glamorous(42)/Sex Appeal/Charm/Seductiveness)
Flirty/Sexy (channel Arche)
(way flirty, uffun musume, so is that really wise?)

Malicious
sort of a badgirl thing, maybe something over-the-top. Wicked, Evil, Fiendish? Mean is good too. Anything less serious.
(wahaha, because everything exists for my sake *snicker*)

Curious (Idly Curious)
a stupid kind of curiosity. I want to say Fanciful (as in led by fancy) but it loses the Curious. FWIW, Fanciful works with both of them.

Nice Boy ...34px
Nice Girl ...34px
Kind Boy/Girl

Frivolous...39px [or Flippant... 33px] (flip; frivolous person; person who readily chimes in with others; person who gets carried away easily)
I know おちょうしもの leans towards negative, but the description leans towards positive.
(flexible actions from flexible thoughts/intentions. nice guy)
That makes me want to suggest Carefree (Free-Spirit[ed]). flexible and plays it by ear
Flippant still works, with a little negative connotation.

Rascal sounds ok

Fool (Foolish Girl)
Description seems like Ditz/Ditzy? (Ditzy Girl)

Sensitive... 38px (humanity; empathy; kindness; sympathy)
Altruistic/Gracious/Kind then.

Lil'Demon [Demon Child too long] (Child Devil)
Hellion? (yours is cuter)

Friendly? [that's the same as Kururu's tomodachi...] (term means "Everybody's friend," come off to me sounding like a bad thing. But the description is "Doesn't discriminate and treats everyone kindly. It's easy to be misunderstood, so be careful.) Friendly works. Either that or Congenial (Miss Congeniality) if you want Kururu's Friendly to be unique.

I am somewhat bothered by the fact that some are adjectives, some are nouns referring to the trait, and some are nouns referring to a person with that trait.
I'm concerned about that too since the combos resemble Tales titles. I suggest sticking with how they do it, Base(adj) X Base(adj) = Combo(Noun), but there's no room. Joker could be Witty/Comical instead (Droll actually fits but sucks).

Wizard
Warlock? Magus? *shrug* Wizard and Witch both sound a little weak as the highest class.
Sage sounds grand enough, I think.

Thanks for the items, Gogs. Is Dowsing Rod okay? I don't know enough about dowsing... Mirror of Truth?

So, scenario items...

I was using sage for kenja though. I could use wisewoman, but...

Okay, costumes, 2.0, still open to arguments... Maybe I'll see how business man works of dai shounen. I think Salesman/Merchant or Trader/Merchant might also work out nicely. I swear I'll get off my lazy bum and grab that scene later. I'm too lazy to count, but Gogs claims Martial Artist fits, so I'll take his word. You can steal a choukyoushi costume from a Beast Master, so I guess that was definately the intent. (And you can steal shudousou from a Monk, which I didn't know when I decided to call that costume Monk.) Guess I should go with Hell Master too. But I thought hell masters were weaker?

I don't like God of Death for Shinigami, what's the opinion of calling it "Death" or "Samael"? Samael is a monster like Gogs said. Here are images for comparison.
(ToS has a Samael that looks closer to the costume, if you care?)
Unlike with Monk and Beast Master (and others), you can't steal a costume from it, so I don't think it was actually based on it, but....

I like warlock over wizard. (And it always struck me as the male equivalent of Witch, despite Harry Potter.) Can I use Warlock? Note the lack of a pointy hat:

out of curiosity, what's the sprite like?
