We don't want to use someone else's translation. It's bad form.

Oh okay, but if you would ask for those people's help in this project would that be using "someone else's" translation as well?

I purposedly save an ISO of ToD2:DC just to wait somebody (esp you) to do a translation project. What a nice New Year present I got now.

Thank you very much for doing this. I'll wait for your release ^^

It is?

The three lines you've done so far don't seem very different than the ones on the translation site.

Well, I'd be more happy about this if it wasn't for the given circumstances but it's in the right hands so I guess I can smile about that.
I'm mostly looking forward to the story translation XD.
But maybe that's because I've been playing with a Partially english menu for a while now.

The lines we've shown were very short so it's really no surprise if they're similar. As long as they're translated properly, I'd be more surprised if there was a big difference. To be perfectly honest, I've never actually looked at that translation site, so I'm not sure to what extent they're similar. It's my policy not to look at those sites because I don't want to accidentally steal someone else's idea.

True, I guess there not word for word. Your's sound better when you read them aloud, I guess all it is really is the choice of words since translations don't always make sense.

I posted this on the Tales Series Forums, but just in case people want to talk about it here...

Quote from: throughhim413 (copypasta from TOSF)
In ToDr, if you select 術技 in the battle menu, you'll notice that their translation of it is "Skill Spell".

The only thing referred to as a calibur in the game is the Blast Calibur. There is no indication elsewhere in the game that this is intended to refer to all techniques.

The official English term for "skills" is now Artes. Since there is nothing in Destiny that attempts to differentiate the skills from any other Tales systems, we saw no reason to create a new term for it. Some of the previous debate seemed to center around the fact that Destiny is somehow "different". We don't believe that to be the case and we want to support the creation of a "Tales vocabulary" that remains consistent from game to game. Artes are an important part of that.

I have une question;
Why have you chosen 'Artes' over 'Calibur'?
I was gonna go with Calibur out of originality and Destiny doesn't really have an 'Arte' like system.
Plus before a 'Blast Calibur' is activated you see "Dillusion Blast Calibur" or something written across the screen.

Well, I've always been up for colorful and liberal takes on different terms. But I'm also one of those who wont fix something that's not broken. Anyway, about the Caliber thing; I, of course, would've loved to see Calibur (Namco's own awesome misspelling). But if I've understood things right, the Disillusion Blast Caliber is tied to a Blast Gauge(?). Thus making "Blast" the keyword, unless you'd read it as "A caliber w/a blast."

Also, the reason for Artes being the current translation is more or less sealed by Radiant Mythology and Dawn of the New World.

Tales of Destiny PSX used Spells (and skills)
Tales of Eternia used Craymel Artes (and skills)
Tales of Symphonia called them Techs (and EX skills?)
Tales of Legendia had Eres
Tales of the Abyss went with a resurrection of Eternia's Artes term (and AD Skills) <- Actually, I guess it was Fonic Artes.
Radiant Mythology had Artes
Tales of Phantasia GBA had just Skills (I think)
Tales of Vesperia returned to  Artes (and Skills)
Dawn of the New World has Artes (and Skills)

The things worth pointing out is:
ToD PSX is an old game which uses a 12 year old glossary.
ToP GBA wasn't Hometek, I think...
Radiant Mythology contains crossovers and uses Artes as the universal term.
Dawn of the New World is a ToP/ToS related title and used Artes instead of Techs/Skills.

So Artes is at least a safe common ground.
(Just like Techs and Skills, which are generic game terms for these kinds of things)

I'm not saying that Caliber is an impossibility, but there has to be some solid ground to stand on if that's the term to be used. And personally, I'd love to see it Calibur (from Namco's typo title Soul Calibur) instead of Caliber, if it was to be used, but that'd require some additional edits to the existing graphics and stuff while people are at it.  But for now, I think it should just remain artes. (Maybe evt. a middleground with referring to them as Calibur/Caliber Artes? Going with Fonic, Craymel and then... Caliber.)

[not really an edit, as I saw it when I hit preview]
See that throughhim's chimed in on it too.

Just wondering what exactly Blast Caliburs are. Is it similar to a Mystic Arte like in vesperia?

I have a few name-related questions, they're not really important but anyway: are you going to use Katrea or Kartret? Also, Felice or Philis? I prefer the localized names in both cases, but either way is fine. Tongue

Not 100% decided, but I think I currently have Katrea down for Rutee but Philis for Philia. It seemed like Philia's last name was sort of like a pun on herself, that got lost in the localization...

Calibur/Caliber Artes does sound kind of neat. I'd say that we could use the term to differentiate Swordian Artes from standard ones, but the fact that Blast Caliburs can be used by all characters doesn't really allow that usage.

Wouldn't that make the term almost appliable to everyone?
Or do you mean that a Swordian Master unleashing a Blast Caliber may not exactly be doing a Caliber Blast Caliber, but a Swordian Blast Caliber?

No, I meant that using the term Caliber Artes to refer only to one set of artes (either Swordian Artes or Standard Artes) wouldn't work because everyone in the game can use Blast Calibers. Calibers themselves don't seem to depend on a Swordian, so if we were going to use the term Caliber Artes, it would either have to be used for all of the artes in the game or none of them. If that makes sense...

Can you add Leon and Lilith to your party in this one? I know there's Lion's Side and Lilith's side, but other than that I don't know much.
