I have heard some things on other tales message boards that this will only be able to be played on a modded PS2 after we use the patch, is this true? Because I only have a normal US PS2 and a slim JP PS2.

Yeah, only a modded PS2. Because you're going to have to take an image file of the original Japanese game, apply the patch to it, and burn it onto a blank DVD.

You can easily mod your slim PS2 and buy Swap Magic discs

You mean to say that we won't be able to run this game with the PS2 hard drive loader also? I read somewhere with the PS2 hard drive, you can apply patches to any iso, copy it to the PS2 hard drive, and then run it from there perfectly fine with the help of the HDLoader program.

You may be able to run it with HDLoader, but some games are incompatable or require special fixes. Abyss required some special fix to get it to run perfectly with a HDD, but Cless says the loading times are significantly improved with it. I don't have a HDD so I wouldn't know any compatability problems, but a good amount of games are reported to work perfectly. In sum, I wouldn't know if this games' patched version will work on a HDD. Cless has one, so I'm sure he'll test it himself before he releases it, but I think it will work.

ToD2 works on a HD. I can't imagine our hacks doing anything that could break the support...

Does the PS2 have to be a certain version (I've got one from launch) to play the DVDs, whether or not you have Swap Magic?

I don't believe it has to be a specific version.

With any fan translation patch for a console game, your console has to be capable of playing pirated software in some way because game discs and cartridges are read-only, and fans can't make bootable discs on their own. That means you'll need a modified PS2 or some exploit like HDLoader. This should be obvious, and I think even the FAQ for the translation project states that. How else would you boot a burned disc when game consoles are known to not boot burned data discs?

My brother told me that you have to swap discs right when the ps2 screen turns black to make burnt games run without having your ps2 modded of having a gameshark (vers 2 or lower, I believe)  I also heard that you need to stick a credit card in somewhere on one type of ps2.

We have 2 working ps2s and about four broken ones...   (one slim and five 'bulky')

Lol. By doing that you can damage your PS2 and disc severelly. and you ALSO need an auctial copy, So with an american PS2, that swap trick wont work.
Your MUCH better off gettnig a swap magic, its easier and much more clean.

For people who use the old fat modle PS2, You need to check your PS2 version Here:
http://www.modchip.gs/ps2version.htm

After you know your PS2 version, You need to buy the Swap magic and new PS2 case to match it.

Fat PS2 version 4-8 mod:
http://www.divineo.cn/cgi-bin/div-cn/ps2-smuftv4

Fat PS2 version 12 mod:
http://www.divineo.cn/cgi-bin/div-cn/ps2-smuftv12

Guide:

That should answer all questions relevant to this topic. ps2 slim you use that guide for holding the sensors down, and for the fat ones your swap magic comes with a new case with a fliptop

I guess I'm lucky, since I have a modded PS2.

I'll be able to play the ToD2... With the advantage of running it in upscalled 1080i(look for the brazilian modchip called Thunder Pro II).

For those who doesn't want to mod their PS2, the best sollution is Swap Magic.

Heh, finally a game translation project that I'll actually be able to play with my in-the-mail swap magic 3 (I was devastated that I found that I couldn't play ToP with just sm3).
