I bet that it the only avoids others there, and being possible to be translated are very good. We should make the topic concerning making fun of an online translation. It might be interesting.

After slaving for some hours, I've managed to find the font. But as of right now I'm not entirely sure how to edit it yet.

There's hope yet that we'll have lowercase letters in the patch!

I don't care much. As long as there's progress.

Actually, if a good auto-translator (e.g. not Babelfish with Japanese) is used by someone who knows some of the language the text is being translated from, is fluent in the language it's being translated to, and has a good bilingual dictionary handy for a second opinion, it can actually do a pretty decent job. For example, I used G-BOC for interpreting grammar of complex sentences, WWWJDIC for unfamiliar words, and my own knowledge of Japanese and English to make sense of it to get this this. (I'm certain of the accuracy of any line that's not labeled otherwise, so I'd estimate overall accuracy to be at least 90%. Granted, the relative simplicity of the text and my personal familiarity with it made a big difference too.)

Of course, that 90% comes from analyzing each sentence individually, not running the whole script through in two minutes. Personally, I can't handle an auto-translated paragraph.

But it's a moot point, I guess, since 90% is not perfection...

Neat. Is there any hope that it could have lowercase without messing up the Japanese? Since you're only translating part of the game, messing up the Japanese is not too good, right? But I guess most people using the menu patch might not care....

The game has two separate fonts. One for the half-width characters and one for the full-width ones. 99.9% of the text in the normal game uses the full-width font.

I'm only editing the half-width font, since all the text I insert is in half width mode anyway. This will leave all full-width text intact.

The half-width font contains kana characters but they're only used in some very small specific parts of the menu. I'm replacing the hiragana with the lowercase letters. As far as I can tell this will only break naming things in hiragana. That can be edited seamlessly though if you just changed the hiragana part of the renaming menu to 'lowercase'.

ダオス「ここまで来るとは、たいしたものだな」

something like "Impressive that you've made it this far" ? Tongue

also, we salivate eagerly at the prospect of new screenshots.

Yup! Literal translation would be "You've come to here, big thing you did, hm." But of course, that's literal, and that'd probably be the translation you got from a translating engine. "Impressive that you've made it this far! (MWA HA HA HA....)" is what you get with human translating. Without human translating, the end of Lufia 2 would never have had the word "hoochies" in it.

I could definitely help out with your remaining 10% there. Let me know. I also emailed Cress about helping with the TofD2 translation.

I guess this is sort of my intro post. I'm a nerdy Linguistics/Japanese double major with way too much time on his hands. Nice to meet y'all.

Presently, I'm learning how to program hacking utilities.

I've just made something that extracts all the map archives in the game. These archives contain the regular script (no skit subtitles... we'll be able to dump those later).

The goal is to transform it into a script dumper over the next few days or so, so that the story translation may really begin.

ToD2's script is 1.16MB (not including skits). About twice the size of ToP PSX.

Okay, actual script dumping (to text file) is in progress... just need to go through all 400+ script files and find some undefined control codes.

Should also be able to dump skit scripts soon as well.

It's great to hear progress is being made on the script.. but 1.16 MB not including skits?! I hope the translator has an iron-cast will to handle that. If you don't mind, what all is left to be implemented for the Menu Only Patch?

I handed off what was incomplete/in need of revision to the translator. I haven't gotten it back yet. I'm not sure what he's done with it so far...

Anyway, I dumped the script yesterday. There's some redundant text at the bottom of most files which is bloating the figure a bit.
