You tell me, you're my audience.  Some of these puns are the devil to work into English without losing them entirely, so any brilliant flashes of inspiration should be sent my way posthaste.

If you've played the game, especially the GBA version, you know where they are.  Otherwise, you'll just have to wait.    Grin

No worries on that score.  That's why I bring up the GBA version really, you can tell where the puns are because that's where that version has the really, really lame jokes.

Actually, on the humor front, I think Cless and nusakan are the ones who are pulling most of the weight.  Well, they're pulling most of the weight anyway...   Grin  Considering how lame some of these puns are even in Japanese, they've done a good job.  It's not hard for me to imagine throughhim curled up sobbing in a corner over some of these, and he did a good job too.  The tree pun in Demeter's mansion is making me want to commit seppuku with my pen.

To be honest, I've always felt that puns (by default) are really lame jokes. Regardless of language, they're the cheap shots of comedy and are delivered the same way as a bag of self-mixed candy (That's why people have such a love/hate relationship with them haha)

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to see what the next build (that comes my way) looks like. Amazingly enough, even though I've probably seen "most of the game" a good few times already by now, I've yet to actually play a full playthrough, from start to end, on a single build. Anyway! When the time comes, I'll be as thorough as I was on the demo. That's for sure.

I agree with you.  I think most of the puns are not particularly clever even in Japanese, but I do admit that I speak as an outsider with only limited knowledge of that language.  It would be nice if they were at least mildly clever in English, while still preserving some aspect of the original joke, but I don't think anyone is expecting Shakespeare here.  I commented to Cless once that I think maybe the GBA version was just going for maximum silliness, because that's funny in a way too.

Of course, you could conceivably come up with something totally different, but in some cases the joke has to match onscreen actions, and that's what makes the pun in Demeter's mansion so annoying.  This localization thing presents me with new and interesting writing challenges, that's for sure.

Actually, I can think of a few places I've seen that I think are funnier than the original (or at least funnier than a translation of the original, which admittedly is not the same thing.)  Sadly, none of them were my idea.  Grin

that 'kay thing from Lymle has to be the single most annoying character trait in any RPG i have ever played.

the rest of SO4 is pretty awesome though as long as you turn off Lymle's voice.
