My top 10 favorite game series are:

1. Final Fantasy. I love Final Fantasy far more than any other video game franchise.  I enjoy listening to Final Fantasy music outside gaming.  I by father prefer Final Fantasy games past IX over the ones that predate it.  I do not care about what negative stuff other people say about Final Fantasy games past IX.  Final Fantasy X was met with mixed reactions at the time of its release, such as some calling it a "great masterpiece beyond perfection" and some calling it "a piece of flashy garbage."  Final Fantasy X-2 is massively underrated.

2. SimCity. I was introduced to SimCity in the same year as Final Fantasy, which is 1995.

3. Star Wars. May the Force be with you.  I am addicted to Star Wars: Empire at War.

4. Fire Emblem. Marth happened to be my favorite character in Super Smash Bros. Melee.  Ayra, from FE4, is my favorite Nintendo character ever.

5. Dragon Quest. It has historically been the most popular video game franchise in Japan.  Dragon Quest III is my favorite Dragon Quest game.  I would like for it to be remade for a Sony system.

6. SaGa. This game series is underrated.  Unlimited SaGa is a cult game.

7. Seiken Densetsu. I was introduced to Seiken Densetsu in 2001.  Seiken Densetsu 3 is the best of that game series.

8. Chrono. Chrono Trigger is overrated. Many praise the game all too much.

9. Front Mission.  I only played the Japan-only original.

10. Metroid. Super Metroid was historically labeled the greatest game of all time.  Metroid: Zero Mission is the canonical representation of the events of the NES Metroid game.

Honorable Mention: Tales, Breath of Fire, Star Fox, Legend of Zelda, Castlevania

Solid ranking isn't easy for me but here's an attempt...

Valkyrie Profile

Metroid (I like both 2D and 3D)

Zelda

Nippon Ichi PS2 SRPGs (okay, I lump this into one series. Disgaea 1 and 2 notwithstanding, they're all incredibly similar, yet have different ideas on going about things. The only one I did not like was La Pucelle)

Resident Evil (If only for RE4. Such a bloody amazing game)

Tales (main series, not a huge fan of the spinoffs)

Phoenix Wright, aka Gyakuten Saiban (only played the first one, but best storytelling in a game EVER. I can't wait for the rest of the series to hit the US market. Supposedly, it only just gets better and better...)

Star Ocean

Final Fantasy (mainly for Tactics. I liked some of the earlier ones in the main series, and had a nearly unhealthy obsession with VI a decade ago)

Shadow Hearts (Covenant was awesome... and it's not often you get a direct sequel to an RPG, much less with a recurring main character)

hm. I can;t really say.. I like a lot of them, and yet hate a lot of games in series that I would otherwise adore..  : \
Well going by my fondest memories, and ignoring the horrible ones, in no particular order... (only for series with 3 or mare games, regardless of how many I actually liked)

Phantasy star: 4 is the peak, while 2 and the original were also quite good - the online death of the series still irks me, as does the cancellation of the 1,2+4 remake package.

Star Ocean. Love to play these. 2 is my fave actually. Don;t know why, even.

Shining Force - 1 and 2 are some of the best games I've played, as well as quite a waste of more then one summer. I'd love to try the US scenario of 3, but can;t afford it. But, while neo is admittedly fun, it's not shining force, and this has to stand as another loved series SEGA has killed.

Sonic the Hedgehog - Grew up with this guy. 1-3, S&K, Spinball, Sonic CD,... I was an addict, and I dont think for no good reason. Sadly, while adventure and even adventure 2 were fun, they put too much enphasis on Sonic's "attitude" or whatever, and added too many support characters, and it kind of .. changed. I still have some small hope for this one, though.

Ace Combat - Fell in at AC4, and been playing it even since. I absolutely LOVE to play this. Hard to get back in after a large break though.

Grandia - Specifically 1 and 2. Great stories, awesome character development with horrible endings, and tedious battles. Every other game in the series is a tragedy.

Dragon Quest/warrior - The original, 4,7, and 8 are wonderful wastes of time. And I think 4 is the best true RPG on the NES.

Final Fantasy - I actually almost hate this series, but have undeniable love for 6. 7and4 tie for second, as do 5, 8 and 9 for distant thirds. Everything post 9 is just flashy garbage, and I don't care who says otherwise.

Tales - Eternia and Legendria to a lesser extent are my faves for the fighting. Symphonia has a good, fleshed out story (if redundant and annoying) as I think did Phantasia and Legendria (I was beyond suprised at that).

MegamanX/Zero - The dash button and it's abuse makes this a good series to play at just because you can move so quickly and smoothly through levels, and once you get good, it besomes immensely fun to do so. The stroy is better off ignored after the original MMX , because it's just horrid (though Zero's simple plotlines aren;t all vomit worthy), and AVOID 7.

Zelda. 1,2 and 3 are king. Pretty much anything that depicts Link as a blond prettyboy with an earring I hate. But at least things are looking up (but I still missed when Link used to actually WALK where he was going instead of being a lazy bum, always using a horse)

Metriod - 3 is absolute king and Prime is pretty good, as is the original. Prime2 and Fusion didn't throw me, though. Can't wait till a Wii incarnation...

Okay, that's all, sorry for rambling.

Tales Around the same as Cless really, love the main series, not to keen on the spinoffs.

Star Ocean yeah of course.

Castlevania Yup love them all. Even before the game hit RPG style. Not to keen on the first game though but Chronicles fixed it all up anyway.

Gradius I bet everyone knew I was going to say this yup. Parodius is pretty awesome too but they don't seem keen on making another one Sad

Aleste and Zanac I bet everyone knew I was going to say this too.

Final Fantasy Simply for the early ones Tactics like Cless said. Although FFIX was pretty good too.

Ganbare Goemon Love the platformer ones. The overhead ones are okay but they're not as fun.

Puyo Puyo <3 <3 <3

Star Fox But alas they will never make one that matches Star Fox 64

Ogre Battle Nothing more I can say here, they can be sometimes unfair but they're still fun neverless.

EDIT: Bleh, remove R-Type anyway, the last game makes the series look bad >_>

4. Half-life: Thats right, i like shooters AND RPG's, strange mix, i know  Roll Eyes
5. Metal Gear: Loved the Solids (played 2&3), not to keen on the Ac!d part, but they aren't horrible
6. Doom: the originals were good back in the day (and are still quiet fun now) and 3 Rocked
7. Chrono: Trigger was fun, Cross could have been better, but still a good game (though ALMOST doesn't qualify as a series in my book)
8. Kingdom Hearts: These games rock, good story, entertaining gameplay makes me look forward to KH3  Grin
9. Mario: yep, i like platformers too  Smiley
10. Devil May Cry: a nice mix of platforming, RPG's, and shooters
Honerable Mentions: F.E.A.R (it's cant be on the list till the expansion comes out Tongue), Tales (I really haven't played enough of them to put it on the list), RE (just b/c 4 rocked), Valkyrie (only played 1 of 2 so... yea can't judge quiet yet), Xenosaga (Oddly enough I haven't beaten any of these (Almost got through 1 but the mem card died, then around the time i wanted to replay the game the laser died and haven't gotten enough money to replace it yet  Cry but i do plan on beating them eventually)

Interesting:
I can't quite make a "top" so I'll just put my favorite series without any ranking

Tales: The more I play these, the more I become obesessed.

Final Fantasy : I like pretty much all of them, but I don't think they're ALL excellent RPGs. My favorites are definitively FF6 and 9. I have to say that I'm quite fed up with Nomura's FF7 compilation >_>

Matsuno "series": Not exactly a series, rather games taking place in Ivalice, the world imagined by Matsuno. Which means, chronologically speaking FFXII, FFT and Vagrant Story. FFTA doesn't quite fit in the timeline, by I love it too.

Castlevania : Mostly IGA's ones. However, I begin to think all of these are starting to ressemble each other a  little too much.

Xenosaga : If I hadn't played episode III, i wouldn't put Xenosaga in that selection, but since I did, here it is. The first one was quite good, but the second a big let-down, both gameplay and story-wise. However, the last game was truely a masterpiece. Like they say, you keep the best for the end...

Zone of the Enders: I was quite intrigued by the first ZOE, which I thought was "good" but lacked a little something and was too repetitive in the end. However, the Second Runner was definitively one of my favourite PS2 games. I was heartbroken to learn the other day that Kojima wanted to make ZOE3 once he was done with MGS4, but on PS3 >_>

Winning Eleven: Well, what would you expect from a football player?^^ Each year edition brings a little more goodness and I'm never tired of playing it.

Metal Gear: If I had to rank all of these series, it would be in the top 3. Great stories, great cast, great games.

Kingdom Hearts: I've been raised with Disney movies, so I was quite surprised when the first KH came out. I immediately liked it. Being also a FF fan, this game was massive fanboy goodness for me :p

Zelda : Link Link Link.

- Tales I really loved the idea of an LMB, it goes to show that there are people still working on refining the gameplay of the RPG genre. The variations are highly creative and it makes sure that the gameplay is slightly different for each installment.

- Valkyrie Profile Everything about this game pleases me. Cheesy

- Grandia Beautiful worlds, excellent gameplay and an interesting tale of adventure and the battle of good and evil of ages past makes this quite a strong series.

- Counter Strike I played it all the time with friends in LAN centers, it is a hell of a lot of fun, especially with custom maps.

- Serious Sam This series of games has really awesome monster designs and behaviour. I sepecially loved those beheaded kamikazes. XD

- Star Ocean I haven't played it much, but from what I experienced...I really like it.

- The Incredible Machine Fun with Rube Goldberg machines and puzzles

- Quake This is FPS at its finest, without the buggery of strategy. It's pure adrenalin.

- Seiken Densetsu A pretty fun series to play around in with beautifully-painted worlds.

- Soul Blazer Trilogy (Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia/Time and Terranigma) A pretty enjoyable adventure game series. Cheesy

PS : I like FF4, 6 and 9 but I pretty much hate the FF series on the whole.

A bit of a difficult list as I'm sure there are more game series I enjoy besides all this lot. In some cases, I've also highlighted my particular faves (only where there are more than two games in a series), I find it tough to think in terms of the "best game/series ever" so they're in no particular order:

Valkyrie Profile

Metroid (Metroid Prime [PAL], Super Metroid)

Castlevania (Symphony of the Night, Dawn of Sorrow)

Tales of (the Abyss, Eternia)

Resident Evil (Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 4)

Final Fantasy (specifically XII & Tactics - yes, I'm preempting my love for XII Cheesy)

Fire Emblem (mainly the GBA games)

Ratchet & Clank - perhaps not everyone's idea of a classic series but I love 'em Smiley

Summon Night (mainly the Craft Sword series)

Megaman Zero - I discovered this series too late so I don't (legitimately) own any of them (but I will be buying Megaman ZX for my recently acquired DS - the "plays a lot like Castlevania or Metroid" comment I read somewhere has me salivating)
Edit: Scratch that, I just bought MMZ 3 & 4 (and ordered ZX). That "Metroid/Castlevania" comment may also be a bit exaggerated (but if it plays like the MMZ games, that suits be fine Smiley)
