Those catchy theme songs and old TV shows.
«

August 03, 2008, 02:18:50 PM »
So, I got addicted to hearing theme songs to some nostalgic TV shows and end up getting them stuck in my head. Also doesn't help I'm reminded of a certain Nostalgia Critic's Top 11 catchy theme songs. So it comes to this topic, mainly to see if anyone can top the ones I mentioned. Which theme songs do you find so catchy that you're going to have to warn people not to listen to them?
Oh, and I will not be held responsible for any theme songs that get stuck in your head.
My catchiest ones, at least for this post, is more of a tie between a couple of Disney cartoons.
Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers and DuckTales.
I don't remember much about Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers except the theme song. Yeah, that's how catchy it is. I don't remember stuff that happen in the show but I remember its theme song. Once it gets into its hyper upbeat part, it's stuck in your head.
DuckTales I tend to remember more of but seriously, the theme song is what you remember. Let me put it this way. My friend was asked if he remembers this cartoon, and his response was "DuckTales? No!" unknowingly singing it to the theme song. Borrowing a page from referenced video, I'll say this. You think you're getting ready to play Tales of Vesperia this month. But no! The only tales you're thinking about are..."DuckTales! Wohoo!" I'll even say you probably know most of the lyrics to the theme song.
Further proving the catchiness of the two theme songs, if I end up playing the classic Capcom games based on these two cartoons, I have to leave it on the title screen to have it play the 8-bit rendition of the theme song at least once. I can't start playing the game unless I hear it through once! That's right. If I pop in my copy of DuckTales for the Gameboy, I can't start playing unless I hear the theme song play once.
Now, like I mention, I'd like to see if you can top Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers and DuckTales as catchiest theme songs that get stuck in your head.
Edit: UraRenge brought it up and I figured I'll link it here, since I was referencing him in this post.

Someone mentioned Thundercats. Yikes. That's another one stuck in the head. Well, I got another one.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5OueTGtbUyk
The Carmen Sandiego cartoon. Yes. She stole something...our focus! All thanks to this theme song! (Well, give me an encyclopedia and I'll go track her down and get that focus back...hopefully in 26 hours.)
Oh yeah, and since I know random people that fondly remembers Carmen Sandiego would mention it, I'll go ahead and mention the Rockapella from the Carmen Sandiego game show.

(I'll admit, I don't know if this should count since I'm using the credits for its theme song)

Both Carmen Sandiego songs were awesome. Here's another catchy tune from the Fox Kids Golden Age:

zomg memories. This thread needs
Captain Planet
. he's our hero, gonna take pollution down to zero... god I didn't even remember there was a rap part at the end. I always hated Ma-Ti's douchy power and his stupid monkey. And Linka had a terrible accent. Now that I know Scott Menville was Ma-Ti, I hate him even more. :p
I used to love GizmoDuck. Nice! DuckTales for GB was really a great game.
But I always hated the Chip 'N Dale song though (chipchipchipchipndale was just grating) ^^; I remember thinking the green housefly guy was annoying.
Holy crap, yes, of course, the Carmen Sandiego Rockapella. That show got me to buy those CS game books with rip-out clue cards.
Voltron... I'm such a fan of that show I even watched the 3D one (Voltron: The Third Dimension), aired right after
Monkey Magic
I think (great show in its own right too, pretty damn accurate to the story).
Also,
Turtle
power.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmcKGcKW76M
Tiny Toon Adventures! (GB game also great) , Animaniacs (any animaniacs song, country songs, Pinky and the Brain), Darkwing Duck, Samurai Pizza Cats (greatest dub ever), Speed Racer, The Flintstones.
These to a lesser extent:
Gargoyles
,
Inspector Gadget
,
King Arthur and the Knights of Justice
,
Double Dragon
,
Eek! Stravaganza
(Eek! The Cat). The chorus to
GI Joe
and
Transformers
.
Mega Man
theme memorable in a bad way.
When the 90s comic book animated shows hit, the
X-Men
theme (back in the day, I used to shove hella quarters into
this
thing all day) and
Batman
. And maybe
Spidey
.
haha wow, goemon fan, carmen sandiego, ducktales gb, I swear we had a similar childhood, CA.

other than the obvious shout outs to the Rockapella, Captain Planet, Turtles, Tiny Toons Adventures, Animaniacs, Gadget, Double Dragon, Eek, Transformers, Mega Man (what?! it was awesome), X-Men, Batman...
Monkey Magic? nice! wasn't aware anyone else liked it
also, i hear the samurai pizza cats dub was great. i also hear they lost the japanese scripts/translations or something, so they just made it up. is that true?

Whoa, what a nostalgia trip. I've been trying to figure out which iteration that Carmen Sandiego theme came from (
the first one CA posted
), it's awesome to see that it's exactly how I remembered it. XD
Lesse'... Captain Planet's another obvious one, I used to watch that all the time as it was the only thing on TV in that timeslot. I'm still a MAJOR fan of
the other Monkey Magic
, even got the DVDs now; and I remember watching Transformers and TMNT when they aired during the same era (
oh look, there's even a Japanese dub of TMNT
XD). It takes very little effort to recall Speed Racer's theme song too.
Animaniacs definitely was a real hoot. Always made time to watch Pinky & the Brain! Inspector Gadget was
awesome
ness, as was Samurai Pizza Cats and Darkwing Duck (although I can't remember the theme songs to those last two without getting a refresher first).
Duuude, I didn't know anyone else remembered Widget. I thought I'd hallucinated that show or something. I wonder if anybody saw/remembers
SuperTed
?
DangerMouse
?
Duckula
?
Trap Door
? ...Yep, Australian TV was saturated with a ton of British stuff. Heh. There's a ton more but I'll refrain because I actually don't remember the theme songs to the rest. XD
Also, while technically not entirely a cartoon, I remember the
Super Mario Bros. Super Show
. Although to be honest, the ending theme to that show stuck in my mind more than the opening did:

"I think I now know why Lloyd Irving has gone renegade! He found out that in another life, he was a planeteer named Ma-Ti and had a lame power called Heart! Let's just say he had a hard time handling it."
I wanted to make this comment on the count of Scott Menville being the original English VA for Lloyd Irving and what Lloyd ends up doing in the Tales of Symphonia sequel.
While I'm at it, I'll make one more VA reference, all because I know Lloyd, if he was in the psuedo-real world, would have a hard time trying to catch Carmen Sandiego, even if Sheena Fujibayashi was with him.
---
Sheena: I found out from someone that Carmen's heading to Frederic Chopin's homeland to steal a memorial dedicated to him. Let's get to Poland!
*Sheena goes off but notices Lloyd isn't coming*
Sheena: What is it, Lloyd?!
Lloyd: Sheena, I thought we're trying to capture Carmen Sandiego, not playing Eternal Sonata!
*Sheena gets frustrated*
---
Yeah, couldn't resist.

Wow indeed! I never thought we'd have such similar childhood.

Transformers. Indeed pretty catchy.
Though there's one Transformers theme I remember more, all because I, somehow, managed to see the infamous bad English dubs to the three Japan only Transformers, later found out it was intend just for Transformers Victory
. Even if I didn't understand any of it, I still had to say that it was pretty catchy.

Yeah, I think most people remember the ending. Heck, when Konami and Nintendo announced a Mario edition of DDR, my first thought was, "Does this mean they're going to make us, 'Do the Mario'?"

i think when i was 6, i thought widget was the coolest thing ever. for whatever reason, it was my favorite show.
also, how has no one mentioned He-Man? even if you don't like the rest, it's automatically epic right at 0:30. that, and imagine "adam" being replaced by "reid", "greyskull" replaced with "fibrill", etc., and it's automatically hilarious
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEsHUel04dY
also, i just watched an episode of samurai pizza cats on youtube, and wow it's pretty damn funny
seems to be written by a team that didn't mind throwing in age-inappropriate jokes that younger viewers wouldn't notice and older viewers would smirk at.

I forgot about the tune there. Then again, of course when He-man's involved, we have to make Tales of Eternia-related jokes. After all, Reid Hershell has the power!

Not to mention, from what I heard, the dubbers either did not receive the original script or lost it (I think it was former). Due to that, they had to make it up and it paid off since it became a cult classic.

I dug up my old Beast Wars and ReBoot tapes the other day, hehehe. Talk about dated, MEGABYTE, mmwahaha.
hahah, I remember Street Sharks. JAWSOME! In the same genre of epicness as
Biker Mice from Mars
.
@Kaji: yeah, I love Monkey Magic. Nata/Nezha and his flaming skateboard thing instead of fire wheels :p
I remember Widget and Duckula! Only barely though ^^;

hehe I think I actually remember the
movie
theme best, might've even been my first exposure to Transformers.
@Samurai Pizza Cats: I absolutely love the mom and son cameos.
OH, speaking of samurai, I was really into
Ronin Warriors
. Armor of Wildfire DAO JIIIIIINNN! HYAAH! *cues Noh music* INDIGNAYSHUN
"intro" is forgetable but I still remember all the transformation/super move themes. FLARE UP NOW!
Some other obvious ones: Pokemon, Sailor Moon, Scooby Doo, The Pink Panther (used to watch the old one and the
90s retooled one
with the ant and the aardvark).
I used to wake up at like 5 in the morning just to watch
Garfield and Friends
'cause that show was on really early for some reason. There's also bits of
Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog
too, but knowing that theme is kinda cheating.
My friend brought up
Ultraforce
(just the show) and
CONAN THE ADVENTURER
(only the manliest show ever). 90s shows were so epic, everything had to be shouted.

if you're linking Transformers the Movie, i'd think you'd link...
YOU'VE GOT THE TOUCH
also, garfield and friends, nice!
and ronin warriors, wow... i never saw it until it was on toonami, where it was pretty awesome...
inferno armor
, flare up now, quake with fear, etc. etc.
that's a really terrible opening, though... luckily toonami's techno intros replaced that one.
how about...
robotech
? despite the mashing together of the different series, it was still epic. or i guess, macross and the other series were epic. never really saw the last one (mospeada or something?), but the first two were great. rick hunter (obviously) and the tech guy from the second series that comes up with the bullshit ridiculously overpowered double shot were i think my favorite characters.
