I could never really get into those SaGa games. Is there one that uses a basic EXP system instead of FF2-style stat development?

Square-Enix's lack of DS localization announcements is getting kind of worrisome. Their backlog is getting larger, and they haven't even announced Dragon Quest IX, which is a 7-month old game at this point. I want FF Gaiden and SaGa 2R quite badly.

Final Fantasy 12 is my favorite FF next to FF4. My first FF was FF9.

There's a fan translation of SaGa 2 Remake in the works by the same guys who're doing Tales of Hearts... and it's nearly complete, so I don't worry about that one anymore. And Dragon Quest was never my cup of tea, so the only recent Square-Enix games for the DS I really want are Blood of the Bahamut and FF Gaiden... and I could live without them, to be honest.

As for my favorite FF games, they're 9, 8, 5 and 7, in that order. The rest ranges from "pretty good" to "worthless piece of crap", but I won't say any more than that. Some FF fans can be pretty nasty when pissed off. >_>

how true, how true...

my favorite FF has to be 5 though. i really loved the job system out of anything all of the other FF games have had. it's the only FF game that i've actually replayed without getting bored, although i've yet to finish that game.
here's a fun story. i got extremely far into one of my files of FF5. i stupidly decided to park my airship on the entrance to a mountain. ON THE FREAKIN' ENTRANCE. when i went into the area and left, i realized i couldn't use my airship anymore. i had to delete my file since i couldn't get any farther into my game. i only had 2 more temples to go. kudos to anyone that actually spent their time to read this Cheesy

How can you say Final fantasy 12 was the worst. I believe that all the FF series is awesome except X-2 now that one could have been better if there was a free roam world map.

Well, first off, I thought I would never being saying something like this but...

I'm actually playing...Final Fantasy X again.  After 9 years since I played it, I decided to give it the long overdue second chance I've been wanting to give it.  Oh yeah, and it helps that I'm wanting to play something Final Fantasy related while waiting for Final Fantasy XIII (which I got preordered).

The rest ranges from "pretty good" to "worthless piece of crap", but I won't say any more than that. Some FF fans can be pretty nasty when pissed off. >_>

I tend to be worry about that...but more on when they cry about something they don't like.  They hear something about Final Fantasy XIII (it's linear, you're controlling only one character) and they already cry that it's not Final Fantasy anymore.  I mean, it's more recently that I tend to realize that Final Fantasy spits on its formula and conventions when it feels like it (but honestly, the Saga series is considered the true rebel against RPG conventions).  Maybe that's something I learned with my short time playing Final Fantasy XII.  Square Enix isn't exactly going downhill, I'm just not into Final Fantasy like I used to be (though I am actually excited for Final Fantasy XIII).

Oh yeah, let's not bring up that they blame the fact Final Fantasy XIII got an Xbox 360 version as to why FFXIII became an inferior game. Roll Eyes  Yeah, they're real nasty there.

Do they? To me the complaints seem more like "it's been so dumbed down we can't pretend there's nothing wrong with it anymore". I'm not surprised it turned out that way, though... 10 was already a pretty big step towards the linear, restrictive direction the series is likely to follow from now on (as long as Nomura's the one in charge, at least) - the only difference being it was slightly less evident, and thus not as many people were bothered by it. 13, it seems, just throws it in your face - "look, you have to get to that place. No sidetracking, no shortcuts, no interconnected areas, no towns. JUST. GET. THERE." - in a way even a 3-year-old kid can notice. And that's why it's been so heavily criticized since its release.

IMO, the FF game that actually gets all the "it's not FF anymore" crap is 12.

i don't really understand why a game being linear seems to be such a bad thing. i honestly LIKE that in a game. Sometimes, having a game where so much stuff is actually optional, annoys me. that's why i never try to beat a game 100%. if i can't figure it out without a guide, then screw it. the developers obviously didn't want me to see/use it.
I also don't see why people are like "it's not FF anymore!! wahhh!!!" the FF games are ALL stand-alone games. they just have similar things, like spells, weapons, etc. the battle systems, the way the story progresses, everything else SHOULD CHANGE. otherwise, it's playing the exact thing all over again, and that's not fun. i mean, look at how much the games have changed.
1) basic, basic, basic
2) growth system
3) job system
4) ATB
5) visible ATB, with enhanced job system
6) magic system, able to switch characters with ATB system
7) materia system
8 ) no idea, something with squall's normal attacks i think...
9) ^^^ haven't played, so no idea lol
10) new/old turn-based
11) MMO, nuff said
12) free movement, ATB, thing... free control of character growth.
and now 13) character growth, new battle system.

big woop, things change. aren't we SUPPOSED to EMBRACE (end) change?

For FF8: The Junctioning. You use magic to increase your stats. Oh, and the GFs have their own HP.

The problem, at least in FF13's case, isn't that there isn't much side stuff to do. It's that there are no towns whatsoever and "dungeons" are all one big straight path. You basically just hold the analog stick up and wait till you get to the exit. I have nothing against linearity myself, but that's way too much even for me.

Oh, and I heard there are only two character stats, attack and defense. I haven't checked if that's true or not, but if it is... lol.

i have to admit, after reading that, i'm a bit shocked. normally the FF games have at least some exploration in them. i was expecting at least an open field... or turns.
as for the stats... lol.
