Hello all.  First, I'll say that I've had my eyes on your ToP project for years, as a lurker, just not registering until now.  I'm looking forward to the release, and great job so far!

Alright, on to the questions.

Okay, so I just bought swap magic 3.6 (for my slimline) ps2.  That's great, I'm hoping to get some use out of it.

However, there's a few problems.

One, is that it doesn't play ps1 backups, even though it said it did (actually, it wasn't until I looked at these forums, that I figured out that it doesn't.  The site says that it works with a gameshark, however.  What kind of gameshark?  I saw the ps1 gameshark lite mentioned here, but there was something about it not working with the newest slimlines... not quite sure what the newest ones look like, but I believe it's just a normal slimline, the code says SCPH-70012 (don't think it's the newest, but not sure).  So can I get some form of gameshark that'll get it to work?

Two, is that I've been now considering playing backup ps2 games.  But, as far as I can see, from wikipedia, most of the ones I've checked (for example, Namco x Capcom (recently translated)), are dvd, or dvd-rom, rather than cd-based, and obviously larger than cds.  Now, our plain old 700 meg cd-rs obviously won't fit that, so what kind of burnable dvds do I get?  And what program to burn them?  (and for that matter, to burn ps1 cds?).  A program that's free (I think Alcohol 120% isn't), would help.

Finally, I've heard about snes and other emulators.  How do you work those?  Is swap magic all you need?

Thnx, and I'm looking forward to ToP and ToD2!

huh... SNES games can't be played on a PS2.  Tongue You'll need to get the emulator yourself and you can only play them on your computer. Or the real hardware if you have it, and the tools to get the ROM into a cartridge.

As for CD burning software, Cless gave the link to a free program on the thread of the PSP sprites patch I think. You should be able to burn CDs and DVDs with that one, and be able to play them on your PS2 with swap Magic.

As for what kind, I think any kind should be fine. I'm not quite sure though.

Hmm, according to zophar's domain, SNES games can (and zophar's usually pretty reliable, albeit not updated in years, as far as I know).

I'll look for that post, on the cd burning software.

Mmm... Can't say I've heard of playing SNES games on a PS2...

Anyway, here's the link to the thread: The thread

Um, no, that wasn't quite it.

While naturally, ToP is included (and will most likely be the first game I try), I was referring to PSX games in general: how to get them to work, what I need to get in order for them to work (I'm assuming the ps1 gameshark lite, but I'm not 100% if my slimline will work with it; while I'm not sure, there's been twice recently that I bought something I later realized that was the wrong thing).

So, psx games was my first question.  What program to use to burn ps2 (and psx) games, was my second (along with what kind of dvds to use).  My third question was about SNES emulators (and yes, I went to the link from zophar's, and there was a site).

Hmm... also, I read somewhere that "not all cd-rs and dvd-rs are equal."  That certain brands are pretty crappy, while others work great.  Any advice?  (in addition to the other questions, still, naturally).

Okay, so I got it, and after some figuring out how to work the thing, I got the Japanese version of Marvel vs Capcom 2 working.

Now, recently I heard that you're supposed to use something called a Breaker Pro with Swap Magic in order for psx games to play.

Is this so?  Or should I look for Gameshark Lite?

Well, hopefully someone can help you. I can't, as my PS2 is chipped so I never really researched it. I do believe I heard you can use any old PS1 swap disc, but don't take my word for it... I vaguely remember something called PSXchange.

Oh, you know what. Since you have a slimline, you can use really ghetto method that has a slight risk attached to it. Have a real PS1 game that boots normally. Load up the game and when it goes to the Playstation logo screen, take out the disc (yes, the disc is still spinning, that's the risk) and put in the import/backup before the logo screen ends.

Um, well, I do have a friend that did the disk switch trick on his psx, but I'm not so sure I really want to do the same with my ps2 - not quite the same value here.

I've been spending quite a bit recently on playstation related stuff (usb charger for my psp that I actually didn't need, swap magic, dvd-rs), and I've actually been getting some money (mowing lawns).  I'm going to look into the breaker pro, or maybe the gameshark lite if the breaker pro doesn't work out.

I'd just use an PSX emulator.

They can actually....SNES Station is an emulator that can be burned onto a CD and be ran on a PS2...of course, you'll need Swap Magic/modded PS2 to be able to run it...

Yes, I remember hearing about that...
Thing is, I'd need to have a LOT of SNES roms to justify using a 700 meg CD-R, something I don't have currently, and I don't really have a million SNES roms.  Moreover, there's never the guarentee that all the roms (particularly ones I like) will actually work.  I remember both Fire Emblem 3 and 4 didn't work on my psp snes emulator; I could probably get it working with a fresh rom with a new patch applied, but if the game's been burned to a CD-R there's no fixing it.
Furthermore, for now I think I'm pretty fine using my psp for most SNES games (though, Star Ocean sounds pretty weird sometimes...)
Thanks for the help though, guys.

Here's another question: what do you do when you've got a two-or-more disk game with Swap Magic (or a swap disk for ps1)?  Do you simply insert the other game?  Or put in the swap disk?  Or can you simply not progress in the game at all?

Most games ask you to save the game before that, so just save, turn off the console, put on swap magic, turn it on, and run the second disk.
