and I got that far, but when it comes to reinserting the movie file back into the ISO, it rends the game unplayable. This is my first time ever trying anything like this, and I have NO IDEA what to do. I'm guessing it's because the file I'm trying to replace is smaller than the file I'm replacing it with, but I can't figure out a way to make it any smaller, or change things in the ISO to accommodate for this new bigger file. : \ Could someone help me out?

I realize this might be pretty off-topic, so if it is, feel free to delete without hurt feelings, but I figured since Cless is doing this with ToP [is he doing that?], this would be a good place to ask. Thanks.

It's been six years since I last attempted this. It was successful (but video quality significantly degraded), but I don't remember the process clearly.

I think I:

1) Ripped the original to an uncompressed AVI using PSMPlay
2) Encoded subtitles via VirtualDub, uncompressed AVI output
3) Encoded it back to MDEC through movconv32 (file was precisely the same size as the original, must be constant bitrate)
4) Replaced the file and rebuilt the ISO via BuildCD/stripiso (I'm not sure how else to insert a new XA file other than this method)

That could be missing some steps, and I don't remember anything at all about dealing with the audio.

I think there ought to be methods without loosing more of the already "barely enough" quality of the Psone hardware. The procedure is being done more now as translations of games go on too, and I doubt many would opt to do that.

Try looking around or asking in www.romhacking.net is my advice

Okay, thanks. I'll try it out and see if there's any significant decrease in quality.

Also, I actually already started a topic on romhacking.net, and I got less helpful responses there. : \

ouch Sad

Try sending a PM for people you know who did such, like Gemini, I recall him talking about re-encoding a persona opening video for his P2: Innocent Sin translation (I don't know if he did already, but he should have the know-how) and he's a pretty nice guy so you're bound to get an answer.

I was thinking of maybe PMing him... If the buildCD thing doesn't work, I'll try to contact him. Thanks. :-]
