Someone tell Atlus the PS3, X360 and Wii exist, for YHVH's sake.
I absolutely loved the first Raidou Kuzunoha game, but this one... don't know, it seems to me like Atlus is too lazy to move on to the next generation, and is doing things the easy way... recycling graphics and characters from a popular game from a well-known spin-off series so that it's almost guaranteed it will sell well with minimum effort. Not hyped for this one, but hope it surprises me in a good way.

Reminds me of whats going on with persona 4. I they were worried about console sales they could have put it on the wii at least. Ya know, because it's the best selling console at the moment. Yeesh I'm really getting tired of developers continuing to make ps2 games. You know what else? This trend only seems to be happening with Japanese developers.

what's the problem with the developers keep on making games for ps2?, as long as they keep the quality I don't see any problem in it, or are you so into next generations console that you forgot the good games the we all played.
and why they would stop all of a sudden to release ps2's games? it would be a disrespect.

....you do know that they STILL release DC games in Japan, right?
Hell, there was an SNES game released in 2000, and it wasn't just any game. It was a goddamn Fire Emblem game (and quite possibly the hardest game of all time)!
My point being, the majority of 3rd party developers in Japan don't move on to next-gen for years, because they know that everyone still has the systems from the gen before it, which is not the case with the current, where the Wii is the only system that actually sells in Japan!

Wii might sell a lot, but most players got still to decide between one of the next gen, and MANY have got a PS2 at home playing
In my opinion PS2 is still a competitor witht he next gen consoles and shouldnt of been taken as "outdated", not until one of the next gen consoles actually is better, and I dont mean only hardware specs, I mean catalog too

well, yes. But I'd still like a Wii version.
16:9, 480p and the visuals hold their own. Like I said, the platform sells, could sell less than the PS2 at this point and still make a good investment, and who knows, perhaps a good transition if they eventually phase out new PS2 games in order to do then for the Wii, and they'd be creating a userbase on a platform starved for RPG's as well.
I mean, american studios release PS2 crap all over, why can't the good games make the transition as well? at least as PS2 games, these games live off the artistic direction they have, it's a lot less insulting than some fugly game getting ported.
Still... if Atlus wants to they can keep releasing them on PS2 to no end, I'd rather purchase a Wii version at this point, but it's better for me than going for the HD consoles, IMO. (bigger development costs, longer development cycles, expanded team, etc... and I really think their games and their engine is fine as it is)

Ive got your answer, cause unlike PS2, Wii community is directed to younger people, thus RPG starved, thus RPG people stay away from the Wii unless they see a good amount of RPGs. It is not only me that thinks that, producers call the Wii a fever, cause you buy it, use it, and then most people at a few months get bored, but in the meantime a friend might see the Wii and get hooked in, a vicious circle.
You get a small interested full dedicated RPG community on the wii, on short

I disagree, and there's statistics of wii usage by consumers that say otherwise. still a console is like a dvd player, people won't buy epic films if they don't release them in dvd, same for rpg's, it's the developers loss though. And our as consumers.
PS2 wasn't core-aimed at RPG people either, it just happened, sure it carried on from PS1... and PS1 began with a RPG userbase? hell no, but look at the titles it eventually had, it developed it. We wouldn't be expecting Wii to sell a shin megami tensei better than PS2 at this point... but it would be cheap to make, even as cross platform and profitable nonetheless.
Also, ToS2 is Japan sold pretty well, as a mere sub-sequel. Sold more than any "insane budget" moneyhatted X360 RPG in japan, and that dragon quest spin-off before MGS4 shipped was the fastest selling third party game in Japan this gen... a mere dragon quest spin-off, how is that even comparable to the desirable sales of a primary game like DQ or MGS? and imagine if it was?
They have every advantage of raising the Wii userbase with RPG's, due to the broader market... some developer might have in it's hands the next FF7 (or to a lesser extent the next FFX). Why? because square is stalling, like and old boat that takes time to turn.
PS1 was considered casual in Japan, then came FF7... and served as a gateway... hence why a lot of people say it's the best game ever and stuff like that, that I can only judge as overating the game... but it most likely was their first rpg, so... it's natural. (same for FFX actually)
I'd say too, that Persona subseries of the SMT are very streamlined and at a fine position to do that, or at least grow quite a bit as a franchise due to the lack of bigger name rpg's at this point on the Wii. (although there's some new ip's looking good coming, but you get my rift)

....are you kidding me? No, seriously.
Do you realize how powerful the very words of "Dragon Quest" are in Japan? There's a goddamn law that says that any DQ game CANNOT be released on any day other than Sunday, because they don't want people skipping work to go out and buy it! If Final Fantasy is the king of RPGs in Japan, then Dragon Quest is their GOD. I mean, Dragon Quest is the reason that Togashi takes forever to let a new chapter out!
also, games can look just fine on the PS2. You don't need to wow the player, you just need to provide a solid playing experience.
That's probably why Banpresto won't have the SRW series leave the PS2 until after this one.
Though I have to say that their newest one looks pretty damn impressive.
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3

There is no such law. That's just an extremely popular urban legend. Hell, take Dragon Quest V DS as proof. It was released on a Thursday.
That being said, Dragon Quest
is
ridiculously popular in Japan, to the point of being more popular than Final Fantasy. It's a pretty close race, though.

Just telling you one thing, I agree on the point about the Wii being cpaable of turning into a RPG console, I dont agree on the point, that you think that a simple game, or a series can make an RPG console, gamers decide that.
PSX had more advantage over the N64 and when the PS2 came out, PS2 was more advanced (we are all speaking from catalog, ok? Not specs)
Wii is gotta make a whole new improvement to change this, a lot. I am seeing a lot of new RPGs, but man many more RPG fans are still with a PS2 at home.
For programmers it is easier to program on PS2, and for developers? Hell yeah, they sell the same or even more on a PS2 than a Wii. Gamers are happy? Yeah, since tey are releasing more games on consoles they own, which is finally what they want.

I'm definately looking forward to the new Devil Summoner game,I really enjoyed the last one...even if others bashed it because of the gameplay, but still gave it points for it's plot involved.
To each his/her own.
But having to summon two devils this time will be interesting and more helpful in battles.

Might take just one game actually, it took one for PSone, just like it took one for the original gameboy (pokémon)
There's titles that start fevers. but yes, that usually is followed by titles cashing on that success. The ther way is lots of RPG's making a console obligatory to a RPG gamer. (that's the DS case IMO, there was no discernible FF7 entry point RPG for the masses, but it has rpg's in quantity and growing)
This said, Wii has quite some RPG's coming, mostly new IP's. DS was also like that at first, even square, released a game called "egg hero" or something like that first.

Dreamcast was more powerful than PSone and came out 2 years prior and discs with more capacity, square didn't jump ship for them.
Psone was considered a mainstream console, next to... say Saturn. Multiplatform titles would sell more on saturn despite a lower userbase... then FF7 happened.

They just have to pull a DS.
If anything, the platform is starved for RPG's, I'm nor saying a game like persona 4 shouldn't come out on PS2... but I'm saying that a Wii version would be painless and a worthy adition... who could expand the userbase for the series.
And atlus needs that.

Actually, no. PS2 is harder to develop for than the Wii, Wii has less architecture handycaps, let alone you not needing to deal with vector units and the fact that it's simply several times more powerful.
Still, it's SD. Atlus games "as is" look fine.

Yeah, and I'm a huge fan of both Milestone and G.Rev, for that matter. But I do think not letting the Dreamcast have a respectable "death" is plain stupid, even more when developers release enhanced PS2 versions shortly after they're out on DC (Triggerheart Exelica Enhanced anyone?)
Quote from: Denim on August 06, 2008, 06:20:14 AM
what's the problem with the developers keep on making games for ps2?
In this case, the only problem is using the same ugly as shit graphics. That shows they're too lazy to either move on to the next generation or improve on the current one, and kinda makes me lose the huge respect I had for Atlus R&D1 before that announcement (and P4... and Nocturne Chronicles -__-).
That's all, really. Except for that, I'm actually happy it's coming out for the PS2, as next-gen consoles in my country are three to five times more expensive than in pretty much everywhere else and I won't be buying one
until there's a safe way to run pirate games.
I don't care THAT much about graphics anyway, and from what was revealed it will be awesome on the gameplay department and will hardly disappoint on story and characters, so yeah, I'm looking forward to it.
Didn't feel like reading the rest of the posts, will do it later.

PS2 was difficult to develop for only in its early years. Developers mastered it over time. They have to learn an entirely new architecture with the Wii. I would say it's easier for experienced developers to develop for the PS2 right now.
As for moving development to newer systems... I can't say I care that much. And Atlus just proved the PS2 is still a strong, viable platform with Persona 4, with its first week outselling Persona 3's entire lifetime sales. It's stupid that the system's being artificially killed off right now.
