Okay maybe I contradicted myself when I bought one yesterday >_>

I didn't get any PS3 games yet, and have been testing out my PS2 games on the system, which don't look nearly as bad as the ones in that youtube clip. I'm finding out that if you don't have an HDTV and you're using component or S-video, the resolution is 480i regardless of what type of game you're playing. My biggest gripe with the system so far is its lack of PS2 memory card slots, and the  fact that you're forced to BUY the memory card slot adapter seperately.

It's times like these that it's best to go outside and make lots of friends. One of them has to have it.

If you don't have an HDTV, there's not much of a reason to even get a PS3 at all at this point. Even then.. and maybe it's just me.. its only real purpose right now would be as a budget Blu-Ray player.

Are regular DVD's really that low in quality anyway? I don;t own an HDTV, so I couldn;t tell you, but I saw an DVD/HD-DVD 'side-by-side comparason' in some store or other and there's no WAY any DVD I've seen ever looked that bad. it looked like a you-tube clip enlarged. Any videophiles to testify to the new DVD formats' validity?

I've seen some high definition myself, and while it looked pretty good, it was hardly mindblowing.

I think that like some previous technologies (VHS, DVD, the internet) high definition will be helped to the mass market with the support of pornography. Since pornographers are apparently having major problems with Blu-ray (too expensive, and the Blu-ray Disc Association being reluctant to let them use it) it seems HD DVD may be winning this format war. Which is certainly bad news for the PlayStation 3...

I don't really think the porn industry will help that much in this format war though
Pay 30 bucks for a 1h20min "movie" + HDTV  over 1000 bucks + HDVD Player almost 500 bucks?Huh?
why so much if you can get some porn for free on the ineternet?
Maybe in a few years when the price is affordable to the average consumer but certainly not yet

Do you really wanna see ejaculations in 1920x1080 XD ?

I don't o_O

Videophile here. The new formats validity are entirely dependent on having the proper (and properly calibrated) equipment to view them with. If you only have an SDTV then you will NOT see a difference over DVD. To illustrate, check out this Wikipedia link.. the lower left box is what resolution DVD is.. the entire box is the resolution of HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. Yeah, the difference is HUGE.

http://en.wikipedia.org/w...ge:Standard_video_res.svg

As far as regular DVD being low quality.. once you've watched a lot of HD content it is a bit jarring to go back. Obviously a store's "side by side" display is going to be exaggerated as they're trying to sell you something. A properly encoded DVD is the best you'll get in standard definition though and is only "low quality" when compared to something SIX TIMES its resolution.
