I'll have to pick it up myself.  I don't know when but I am sure to pick it up.  Already heard it kicks butt.

I'm really surprised at how much flak this game is getting... elsewhere. It's really well, and brilliantly designed, IMO. The only thing I don't think I like much is the new shell powerup.

It's been hell at GAF, people are such a bunch of whiny kids.

"OMG this doesn't live up to my child hood memories!1"

Waahmbulance down there. I guess it shows the power of the Mario franchise; a well designed 2D game getting flak? That wouldn't be the case with just about any other platform series.

What I want to know though is if the level design is on par with SMb3 and SMW? It's hard to know what the general consensus is when people are simply fighting over opinions...

I'd say stage design is "most" like SMB3, but you've got touches of things seen in SMW and Yoshi's Island.
(mostly stuff related to moveable objects, locations like the ghost houses, red coins, multiple exits and changing terrains)

Controls feels pretty much like SMB1 and SMB3, with an added Mario 64 triple and wall jump, an evil blue mushroom that makes you really tiny and a giant mushroom that makes you big and lets you stomple around and break down objects (even pipes) :p

This game is truly a 'worthy' (if you wanna use that expression) sequal to the original games.

And just for a little personal thoughts on things:

I like the blueshell :p

And I just wonder what's up with the heat some people give this game... I think it's the typical thing that happens when a new platformer appears, mixed with the retro sequal syndrom:

*starts playing and dies a few times at the same spot early in the game*
-Holy shit this game sucks! <- Totaly ignoring that it's not the game, but they, as a player, that suck.
*sees new features and spots no stages or music that is exactly the same as in the original*
-OMFG THIS IS NOT SMB! <- Which totaly ignores the fact that every Mario game has had new features and mostly had totaly new/original music everytime, with just a few tunes comming back (such as the underground theme)

I've pretty much accepted that nothing's going to bring back the feeling of childhood memories. The last time I really felt any semblance of that was 6 years ago.

What I want to know though is if the level design is on par with SMb3 and SMW? It's hard to know what the general consensus is when people are simply fighting over opinions...

Honestly, I haven't played those games in well over a decade. I never really put much thought into any of that... I just sort of played them without a second thought. If you know what I mean.

One thing I really dig though is that nearly every level is different in its own way. One level features a lot of bouncy platforms, another you've got to deal spiders falling from the sky every few seconds, etc... it really keeps things fresh.

The versus mode on this game is so good. I really wish they'd make a full-out separate versus game based on this, with a 4 player mode and 30-40 levels. I think I've gotten more play out of the versus mode than the single player game.

I love the DS.. we managed to get a seven player game of Tetris running at my place last weekend!
