Wondering if it's that or maybe I'm just using bad burns.
Normal games work just fine but "back-upped" games struggle and lag annoyingly through cutscenes while actual "gameplay" seems to load a little longer than I remember....*sighs*

Might be the laser packing up because of poor media used for your backups.

make sure you are using high quality media. Verbatim is one of the prefered brands for PS2 DVD games.

Forgive me if I wasn't specific - I have a mod for a Slim PS2.  And I've always been using Maxell DVD+R with no trouble at all until recently.  Maybe I'm using a crappy program/settings while burning.  What are some recommendations?
