General Wii Discussion

I figured I'd start a new thread since pre-ordering is long gone.
As soon as I get to leave work (15 more minutes!) I'm on my way to pick up Super Swing Golf.. I'm hoping it'll deliver the sheer amount of fun I've gotten out of Wii Sports golf with added sugary cuteness as 99 holes instead of 9. My girlfriend plays the online PC version of this game and it looked like a blast, at least, it'll be something to hold me off until Mario Golf comes out *droooool*!!
In other Wii related news.. I took back my HDTV and am back to SDTV. I'm happy that I got to finish Zelda in widescreen.. but the TV had this loud buzzing that sounded like a fluorescent bulb and it bothered the hell out of me while watching movies! So now I'm looking for a new one.. the Sony SXRDs look sexy as can be, are 1080p and aren't quite as wallet-raping as 1080p LCD flat panels. Of course, the smallest is 50" so I'll need to check if I can accommodate that size but oh man that's going to delicious if it meets my needs in a few areas (mainly how it handles 480i/480p signals).

Nintendo is also responding to the WAY OVER-HYPED "problem" of the remote wrist straps in a replacement program. Kudos to them, I put in for 3.. all remotes that starting shipping at the beginning of December already have the new straps and of course all mine were from week one. I don't feel I need them (we all known better than to apply enough force to put a hole in the wall with them) but hey, it's always better to be safe than sorry.

Ladies and gentlemen, I have sustained the first Wiimote replacement strap related injury.
Details Here.
Yep... I'm pretty damn stupid at times.

I, too, play Pangya on the PC, and it is fun, but I htink part of that is the online aspect, which I think was taken from it with this version. Not sure how well it wil transfer to the Wii because of that and the new control scheme.
Anyway if you find it fun, let me know, was also looking into it.

Here's what I wrote on a another site:
Okay, here are some quick Super Swing Golf impressions.
Super Short and Sweet Version:
Do you like Hot Shots Golf or Mario Golf?
If you answered yes, then you'll like this game too!
In comparison to Wii Sports Golf, this one controls with the Wii remote much more like a real golf club. In Wii Sports, you can basically flick your wrist to make a swing. Here, you actually have to aim the remote down, pull back and swing forward in a circular motion. Unlike Wii Sports, the power of your shot is still "clickable," for lack of a better term. Basically, you pull back the remote until you land on your desired power and then hit A, that "locks" in your power though there is still variance in how slow or fast you swing forward. SSG also detects your left and right angle.. so for a straight shot you have to swing forward straight. The rest of the controls are basically as simple as Wii Sports, up and down to select a club, left and right to aim. B for free camera, 1 for full map.
The game has a lot of arcade style stuff. You earn money as you play, clean shots, nice approaches, etc. all earn bonus bling, and bling is used to buy characters, outfits, customizations, balls, etc. I only played two quick match games, so I can't go into the story modes and all that..
I do have a few complaints though.. there's a full roster of characters but you start with one boy and one girl character, I guess the rest are unlocked; this is a bummer in my opinion as it leaves little variety in multi-player until you unlock other characters (well, this is another assumption as I haven't played a multi-player game yet). Secondly, I actually prefer how Wii Sports handles the power.. what I liked is that it added a level of unpredictability to your shots, unlike Hot Shots and Mario where you can "click" the perfect shot each and every time. Now, that doesn't mean you can make perfect shots left and right here.. but there does seem to be a bit of a "comfort zone" in clicking the power of your shot before making the actual swing. Finally, putting. Putting is Wii Sports handled a little like actual putting in that you have to make a tapping motion with the remote. Is SSG it acts identically to a regular swing.. not major, but the difference in remote usage on Wii Sports really added a nice level to it.
So far, so good. It's basically Mario Golf before Mario Golf actually comes out, in my opinion.. so if you like that, this is good bet for you. If you want real golf.. I'm sure EA will have a few coming out every year, so I'd say pass if you want Tiger Woods. The swinging controls are much more immersive than Wii SPorts (minus putting) and there's something like 99 holes here as opposed to 9. Plus, once everything is unlocked, creating custom characters should add a little flair to multi-player games.

Cool.. Opera and Forecast Channel in the same week. Though, honestly I don't think I'll be doing much with either of them. I'm probably picking up Trauma Center tonight.. my girlfriend mentioned wanting it for Christmas and I really enjoyed the DS version so it's win-win for me.

It's the exact same game except using the old Wind Waker control scheme.
Plus, no progressive scan mode (one of the only first-party titles) or 16x9 mode.

First, the obvious: You need an EDTV or HDTV and component cables.
Second: It's automatic, simply switch your Wii to 480p and 16x9 in the System Settings and all games (including virtual console games) will run in 480p. Well, currently GameCube games still have to support it and have to be enabled as per the usual (99% of the time you hold down B while the game loads).

In the Wii version, Link's right-handed since a majority of people playing will be right-handed. They don't need to worry about righties or lefties on the GCN, so they flipped the whole thing. So if you needed to go west in the Wii version, you have to go east in the GCN version.
Edit: A few more things I remembered. Wii uses the D-pad for items, so they had 3, plus Midna at the top. On the GCN version, you only have two item slots, X and Y, and Midna is mapped to Z. They couldn't do another C-UP thing since C-stick can control camera which you can't do on the Wii version. Also Quick Spin Attack is available for the GCN version which means no waiting for the Spin to charge up before you can do another one if Quick Spin is used.

Haha, flipping the whole game just to make Link left handed in the GCN version seems like an overly complicated solution to a very simple problem...

Technically, they flipped the Wii version.

No, I know. I only phrased my statement the way I did because of how Kogahazan mentioned it above. I'm aware Link was always left-handed. Either way, my point was simply that it seems strange that rather than just flipping Link's character model, they would invert the entire game from one version to the other.
