So in this thread I would like to discuss all the "remaking" that is in the making. Honestly it feels a bit ridiculous that Final Fantasy 1 has been released on like... 5 consoles, and still being the exact same game as it was on the ol' NES. But then again we have titles like Star Ocean First Departure, Final Fantasy III and Final Fantasy IV that actually HAVE changed slightly, and not only in appearance but in general system and general feel too.

I'll begin this thread with Cannon Fodder:

Cannon Fodder

A rather pointless game to begin with, but even so a classic and one of my favorite games.

Are we tired of game remakes and do we think the gaming companies should look forward, instead of turning around now and then looking at what they can milk? Perhaps it is good that the companies are looking back now and then. I think Star Ocean 4 might be a result of something that they realized while remaking Star Ocean 1 and 2 (I read that Star Ocean 4 was originally going to be named "Star Ocean 0"). This is however just speculation.

I believe Final Fantasy Dissidia also was the result of the same situation. By remaking all the games from 1-6 over and over again on different consoles grew on Square-Enix and thusly they released Dissidia. Perhaps that was the end of the classic Final Fantasy remakes, or will we be seeing a 3D port of Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy VI on DS as well in the future? Why stop at Final Fantasy IV? Really?

Final Fantasy IV

Are remakes really good all the time as well?

Chrono Trigger DS

http://www.gamecyte.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/chrono-trigger-ds-1.jpg

I've heard Chrono Trigger offers you the amount of TWO new "awesome" features. One new boss... one new ending. Makes me want SHRIEK in excitement <- Sarcasm intended if you didn't get it.

For me graphics does not matter, it depends on the content in the package. Is there a new system? New moves? Revised game script? And so on etc. etc. graphics is the last priority. And betcha I got disappointed at that Chrono Trigger remake. A good remake is something like this ^^

Tales of Destiny (PS2)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/b/ba/Tales_of_Destiny_Screen.JPG/250px-Tales_of_Destiny_Screen.JPG

http://www.siliconera.com/news/0609/todps201.jpg

Which has enhanced the story, the battlesystem, new attack moves. This remake must be the most ideal remake for someone like me. And did it bother me that a release for America or Europe never came? Yes. Yes it did. Did I get happy when I found this site? Yes. Very much yes. Though in the beginning you never talked about Tales of Destiny PS2 translation back then, and I thought "Well, Tales of Destiny 2!" as I pretty much know the story of Tales of Destiny story. But nonetheless, back to the topic at hand!!

What do you think about all this? Should they stay turned for inspiration, or for milking? Or is it about time they turn back forward after bringing back the past to the future? I myself am growing slightly tired of all these remakes, even though I appreciate them very much.

Spell Checking fun: Square-Enix = Scaremongers? :p

From the past to the future, and back to the present~
While not strictly an actual remake, as it's more of a re-imagining of the story, I personally enjoyed the Gameboy title Seiken Densetsu (aka. Final Fantasy Adventure) that was remade into the Gameboy Advance game Sword of Mana. Some fans/gamers didn't like it at all, but that's par for the course with the series. Shame it was the last decent Mana game ever made, though I haven't tried Dawn of Mana yet because it didn't come out in Australia.

Sword of Mana was great. I can't fathom why Mana fans hate it. FFA was my favorite in the series, and Sword is essentially FFA with fancier graphics and presentation. I certainly enjoyed it more than the overrated Secret of Mana and Seiken Desnsetsu III. Small text is fun.

Also:

Dragon Quest IV
Dragon Quest V
Dragon Quest VI

DQ4 and DQ5 are loosely based on prior remakes for the PSone and PS2, but Part VI is brand-spanking new.

Legacy of Ys is another one to add. I actually want to try it, because it implements a Zelda-style combat system.

A Boy and his Blob is being remade for the Wii, it was an NES game, and the art style they're taking with it looks great. The game is very early in production I heard, so don't be shocked that there's hardly any sound in the video aside from the BGM...

I LOVE remakes to death, and I wish quite a few older games would be remade, like Tales of Phantasia. (would really love seeing Phantasia in a Vesperia or Destiny Remake like style...)

I'm pretty tired of ports...at least the ones that add a lot of extra content, sure, you get more stuff, but it feels like the early adopters got screwed over...I do end up buying the same game twice if I really love it, but I wish developers would just take more time developing instead of "Hey, we're not finished with this part yet, oh well, release it later in a Director's Cut edition or DLC! Cheesy"

Wow I'm really impressed with that one. That's the most like a cartoon I can ever recall a game looking.

I agree, Secret of Mana wasn't very good if you ask me. However I loved Seiken Densetsu III and I personally prefer it over Sword of Mana.

you guys are crazy!!!112 secret of mana was totally awesome.

... but i see no one is defending legend of mana... out of curiosity, is it considered a main entry in the series? and if not, was that decided during development, upon release, or some time after release like tales of the tempest?

No, otherwise it would have been titled Seiken Densetsu 4, like Dawn of Mana was.

Never played Legend of Mana. I heard some bad things about it. Might try it out once I have some free time.

Can we stop it with the small text now? >_>

I enjoyed Legend of Mana, but yeah, your mileage may vary, as they say. The soundtrack is one of the strongest points about the game, but actually playing it is another matter. Bit of a niche title because of the way it was executed.

I think we've steered this topic away from the intended course a bit. So... uh, let's start mentioning other videogame remakes!

Hmm, Furai no Shiren (Shiren the Wanderer) got a DS port, if I recall correctly, but it doesn't qualify as a remake. I haven't played either version because I suck at roguelikes. XD

Phantasia has been remade quite a bit. I personally would rather not see another remake for it.

Phantasia done in the style of Vesperia would be awesome. That would be the only justification for Namco to revisit it.
