You're not the only one searching.  I and a few others have tried looking in the past, but there is no freely-distributed program that can open the file.

Cless, the founder of Phantasian Productions (for which these are the forums), and his team of translators are probably the only people that have a program that works.  He developed it himself, but it is not for distribution to the public.

Sorry.

I wonder why Cless never releases his programs...
I know tons of game hackers that release their tools. Said they did it in order to help out people who want to learn abit more about hacking and what the tools do.

Plus it encourages fellow hackers to help in the project.
But I am not, so I dont mind

I am XD.
I could beg and beg old Cless for his programs but it wouldn't matter. Even if I were married to him he wouldn't let them go.
Though the programs he makes are usually custom to that particular game.
For Tales of Destiny: DC he has custom archive extractors, file compressors/decompressors, DAT.BIN extractors, Even a program to view Destiny's .TM2 images seen as they can't seem to be viewed by anything that has a .TM2 plug-in...

It might take a while to explain how the tools work, and he doesn't want to wade through tons of "how does this work?" e-mails (like the wiki trans questions for ToDr).

Why I don't make our tools public domain is rather simple: To help avoid potential, unwanted competition. Not only that, but to "protect" future potential projects of interest where most code can be easily recycled with few mods (hello, Phantasia PSP, Team Destiny PS2/PSP titles).

We spent all the time figuring out how things work for our projects, and it'd be a pretty big kick in the face to find out someone was using your blood, sweat, and tears to effortlessly start their own competing projects with them.

Few hackers actually release their custom made, game-specific tools for their personal projects. Most don't serve any other purpose than a translation project, anyhow. I have not made anything specifically designed to suit the interest of non-hackers (image rippers, etc.).

It might not be a big deal for smaller titles, but Tales is rather desirable to have in English, isn't it? Fly-by-night operations could potentially start all a over the place. God, do I remember the Pokemon translation days...

How does it look when all's done then? Is there any possibility of it being released when you're done translating or before you die of old age? :p Or will it disappear with you? Because now that Penance explained some of the programs, it awakened much interest ^^

Not only all that, which you said, is that it generally (probably) isn't all that legitimate everywhere (some of the programs) and if abused and misused it could cause problems for you Cless. Right?

It's ridiculous to see people pestering Cless for his tools all the time. He has absolutely no obligation to release those tools ever and the fact that some people continue to act as if they've been wronged by that almost makes me angry about it. I'm not sure when romhackers got so lazy. It used to be that when you wanted to do something, you would go and try it yourself. Frankly all of the tools that are out there now have brought on this storm of newbies who know little to nothing about create their own utilities. You think Cless had any of these tools when he started hacking? I'll give you a hint, he didn't. When he needed tools, he made them or found people to help him make them. Why should he have to reward people looking for a shortcut when he didn't get one? What he does with those tools is completely up to him. I'll bet that for every hacker who releases their game specific tools, you can find 5-10 who don't. This is far from uncommon.

Yes, you have a point throughhim, why would anyone lend their tools after so much insane work to make them, just to end up being in a negative way.
But taking this to another context, wouldnt that make it a bit easier for other people to translate other games?
At any rate, it is your tools, your decision and mainly your effort. So you have all the right to deny the tools to anyone, and to be mad about people pestering about them.
Its as if someone who is sucessful on his job has a lot of money, and people keep asking for it.  Bang Head

I fully agree with you throughhim, it is 100% up to him.

If Cless thinks like this too I have to honestly say that he is a bit narrow minded. The (singular) reason was good enough, he doesn't want any competition.

But the main point stands: "It took Cless a long time, and during that time he probably thought 'isn't there a faster way to do this?' more than one time." there should be something within Cless that understands completely the ordeal of not having a shortcut when you need or want one.

Turning it around, it can be a rewarding gesture to NOT give the people whatever they want. So that they too can suffer and understand the ordeal too. So that they too can grow up. If you want to turn 25 years old you have to live 24 years and 364 days first (if not leap year). You can't just skip ahead and think you'll be as experienced as any 25 year old.

But enough "pestering" (I would rather like to call it "discussing"), keep up the good work guys! ^^
