 Grin.....  http://www.reuters.com/article/rbssConsumerGoodsAndRetailNews/idUST11627020081210

It says in the article that they're attempting to reach a larger fan-base by going to the Wii........ Does that mean that DQ will become a casual gamer's game.... NOOOoooooooo  Sad LOL I hope that doesn't happen

A LARGER fanbase? I guess they're aiming for a bigger fanbase in the West, because other than that, I can't see how they could expect to get more attention in Japan.

I guess it'll become about as casual as DQIX.

As casual as DQ 9?? What does that mean? didn't they change DQ 9 back to the orginal Dragon Quest format after complaints? I like the idea of being able to customize preset characters but what I'm worried about is it becoming like DQ: Swords... ugh

I'm guessing DQX will be like DQVIII. Hell, they'll probably re-use a lot of textures and assets from that game.

they did, his point is that the "oh god, casual!" has no reason to be in the first place.

Besides, Dragon Quest could use some inovations that I doubt they'll make, not because of the platform mind you, but because of the core fans expectations.

won't happen, that's a spin-off made of the Dragon Quest Kenshin (google it), this is a regular Dragon Quest, for the leading platform.

Wii in itself is a bigger userbase than the others, and Dragon Quest didn't exactly make a splash outside Japan just yet, so really, don't read that much from it. Finally a decision that makes sense for Square-Enix though.

Well, yes, but also, taking handhelds aside, Wii is the only sane logic for a new Dragon Quest entry, even if you only took Japan in question.

This said, a lot of games would only make sense on it and developers manage to well... be stupid.

I dunno. If for some reason they decided to release it to either the Xbox 360 or the PS3, I'd expect it'd give the platforms quite the sale boost in Japan, given how popular DQ is.

DQ is indeed a system mover, but Hori himself says he prefers to put them on the "leading" platform. That's why DQIX is a DS game. That said, I wonder why X isn't following that lead. The DS is still destroying everything else.

Maybe he prefers to put the mainline installments on consoles, but there was no clear "leader" as far as consoles go when DQIX was conceived.

I dunno, but I've always seen DQIX as the exception on a trend, more like... making a wall come down; I mean gameboy had been market leader since 1989, I'm sure back when PSone came out it had a way bigger userbase, so why putting DQ there instead? point being... handheld was never meant to get a main game, it would instead get some spin-off, that holds true to this day, bar DQIX and I feel DQIX pioneered something that could happen more often in a few years. I mean I even remember hearing that getting DQIX approved for a handheld was something hard to do.

On the other hand, the remakes came to the DS and releasing a main numbered one there is quite the cherry on top; so it's hard to me not to think of them all as... kind of the same package.

But after it's over and done, I still prefer these games on a home console, and I feel they belong more in there, so I find this as a fine decision. Not to mention that Square-Enix support up to this point for the Wii was getting moronic, they needed some title to cover that up, and hopefully, change their ways.

So... I guess must be a mix of efectively being the leading home platform and that warranting the title, and Square-Enix needing to announce something for the Wii and do it quick.

I don't think moving a hardcore RPG series to the Wii makes it more "casual".

And assuming the Wii is only for casual gamers isn't very wise. Every system has a certain amount of casual titles.

DQ will always be a hardcore RPG gamer's game.

I was kind of hoping DQX would remain on handhelds since I definitely prefer them for RPGs - especially Dragon Quest kind of RPGs, but Wii is a fine and logical choice.

DQ has always been for everyone which is precisely why it has to always be on the system with the highest userbase. It appeals to basically everybody in Japan, and so the DS and Wii are such perfect fits for the franchise.
