Just got word from a friend of mine and it's on a few websites (none of which I can access from work). Looks like Capcom is dissolving Clover studios, whose named was supposedly formed from the words "Creativity Lover." Apparently, Capcom has had enough of creativity and is shutting the studio down, most likely to finance more Resident Evil and Megman games.

The studio was responsible for Viewtiful Joe, Okami, God Hand and, before they had the studio name, Steel Battalion.

I bought Okami.

I also bought Viewtiful Joe when it was on clearance but never got around to playing it and eventually sold it.

But as far as Resident Evil, I'm all over them if they follow in the footsteps of RE4. :P

Okami is one of their only games I've played, I just never got around to the others.  In any case, Okami was one of the best games I've played in a long time, so I'm sorry to see the studio dissolved.  But it's not like there will ever be a game shortage, so it's nothing I'll lose sleep over.

Ah. Since the interview said the rights to the Clover properties will be transferred to Capcom, looks like Capcom may still attempt to make more games like Clover's... but the problem is that most of the staff is gone...

That's no problem for Capcom since they were doing that anyway. That's why Clover was actually founded, to allow their creators more control over their creations (remember Devil May Cry was taken away from Kamiya after the first game, Gyakuten Saiban is now handled by different people, Resident Evil 4 was ported to PS2 and extended without Mikami's consent etc.). Edit.

That's good to hear, I hope they find a more willing publisher this time.

You know something's rotten in the games industry when the reward for producing a magnificent adventure like Okami is the complete liquidation of your studio. All is not lost, however, as the former members of Capcom's Clover Studios have moved their aspirations to fresher soil. GameDaily BIZ reports that the team's new studio, Seeds, is currently in the process of hiring new employees to join a current roster of 51.

Amongst those lies a designer trifecta: Viewtiful Joe's Atsushi Inaba, Resident Evil's Shinji Mikami and Devil May Cry's Hideki Kamiya. Seeds has yet to announce any projects, but a cel-shaded, survival-horror title (with a guitar-wielding protagonist) would certainly be a good start.

I thought Clover was broken up because Okami didn't sell that well.

Clover was brought into Capcom to produce fresh properties.. then when Capcom found out they can actually do that internally (read: Dead Rising and Lost Planet) I guess they figured Clover wouldn't be needed.
