I've recently found a few cool chip tune sites. For those that don't know, chip tunes are basically music made on using the sound chips of old computers such as the NES, Game Boy, Commodore 64, Atari ST, etc.. so if you're into that kind of nonsense, here's a couple of good sites to check out.

HUGE collection of chip tune stuff, organized by release. Most of this stuff is good, a lot of it is GREAT. The Xinon, Vim, USK and She mini-CDs are getting a lot of play by me at the moment. They even have little CD pictures which make cool album art for iPod owners.

This is a podcast, well two podcasts. One is of course chip tune specific, the other is just music made on Amiga computers, but not necessarily chip tune style. They're all recorded from the the original hardware too. Pretty cool stuff.. though I'm personally enjoying the stuff from 8bitpeoples more.

Yeah, chip music rocks.

Also, similarly, I like The Mod Archive. The place is an ocean of unsigned tracked music modules of various styles... stuff you won't find anywhere else. I love diving in and finding treasure. The really bad stuff can be comedy gold, as well.

Ah yes, I've been going to Mod Archive since around '96 or '97.. when everyone in my high school was being manipulated into listening to Nirvana and Sound Garden my friend and I were making cassettes off of Mod Archive. Good times. Consequentially, there was a .mod there of a song by a German group called Dune.. which led me to being a big fan of theirs back in the day.. which led me into the whole European dance/trance scene.. which led me into being a DJ for a couple of years. Once I got back into gaming I dropped the DJ thing - having two expensive hobbies is no fun.

So do they make their own original music, or re-do songs into the 8-bit format?

Most of the songs there are original, they're some remixes here and there. The remixes are pretty shoddy if you ask me though so I tend to ignore them.

I never paid attention to many chiptunes there though, there were a few that are quite well noting.
