An odd request, I know...

Okay, here goes:
I'm making my own Tales game, and I'm testing some things out to see if they'll work or not. I don't plan on having it fully voiced, but for battle would be nice. Therefore...for anyone who'd like to have a little fun...send me a recording of yourself shouting "Demon Fang" or "Tiger Blade" or something, as if you were voicing the battle cry for a character in a Tales game. I'd do it myself but...you know.

That sounds awesome, but how exactly are you planning on making it? Like, are you programming it from the ground up, or using a program like RPG Maker 2003? (yes, I know, that game uses a side-view system, but it does have the ability to make a Tales-type battle system)
^_^ This seems really interesting. If you'd like any help on it, I'd be happy to do what I can. I'm not that experienced with actual programming, but I use to be an RPG Maker junkie (I used RPG Maker 2003 to make version of Space Invaders for a school project once...), and you never know, that knowledge might come in handy.

It's not going to consume my life or anything, I just figured it would be fun to do in my spare time. I'll be using RPG Maker XP to do it...I had planned on using 2003, but there are some features I wanted which it can't deliver. I'm only just starting it now, but if I should need any help, I'll be sure to go to you, Mr. Former RPG Maker Junkie ^_^
I'm still toying around with story ideas, but I think that basically I'll use characters from various Tales games (along with some new ones of my own creation) and put them in interesting little scenarios. They won't necessarily be together, either...for example, you may be Genis and a friend of his and complete some kind of mission and then move on to being Stahn...so actually it won't be one large story, but several little ones. I dunno. As I said, I'm still toying around with ideas. Any and all suggestions are welcome.

I tried RPG Maker XP, but it glitched (redownload needed, maybe?)
http://charas-project.net/
That site is the best for RPG Maker resources (not much for XP, unfortunately), so check it out. you can probably convert sprites and stuff, but they already ripped a lot of graphics from different ToP games. On the left hand site map, just go to "Complete Resources" and make searches for what you want.
And GOOD LUCK! I know you say it won't consume your life or anything, but...LoL! ^_^

Once again, thank you for your support, Fluffy! By the way, I'm pretty sure I still have the original setup file for RPG MXP in case you want and can't find it...I know it's pretty hard these days. Anyway, all I've succeeded in doing so far is making the basic items. I had fun ripping and importing a bunch of item pics from Tales of Phantasia. See?
It sucks so far, but still a long way to go.
By the way...still could use some recordings!

I dunno about recordings... maybe? I could give it a shot? XD
The item menu looks nice -- since the default Battle System is a first-person one, kinda like Dragon Quest... well, how do you plan on making the Tales-type battle system?
And the custom menu system (unless you're foregoing that...)
Those are gonna be the hardest things to do. Gotta completely re-code the battle system from the ground up... Variables, Switches, Fork Commands.. *shudders at the thoughts and memories* XD LoL~!

I'm not using the default battle system. I'm using my own variation of a script I found online to code the battle system, which will basically be like a side-view system since I'm sure a Tales-style system would be way too hard to be enjoyable. I'd show a pic, but modifying the script is proving to be very difficult and I'm not really getting anywhere yet. I will also be doing a custom menu system to conform with what would be expected from a Tales game.
As for the recording...I seem to remember some n00b coming in here a while back and ranting about how it was his dream to be a voice actor. Where is he when you need him??? And I've just now realized that this entire thread consists of just you and me...

Part of me feels like shutting up because I feel like a n00b for being the only one replying. XD but...um... maybe other people just don't have an interest in anything consisting of actual game designing? It's not like people couldn't go off and talk about games they've made or whatever.
Well, who cares, anyway. XD I really am interested in this. For a while I wanted to make a Tales game with RM2k3 and never did, so if you actually go through with this and pull it off, I think it'd be cool. =P Hopefully someone out there agrees... ^_^;

I'm going to try it, just for fun.
I've just tried my laptop microphone and the quality is pretty decent. I'm just going to wait dawn in order not to wake up everyone in that house (it's 1:15am here) and that everyone leaves too
Anyway, tomorrow is going to be a fun day for sure.

Hey, I'm interested! Where'd you find the script? Nice menu, too.

Ok, here's what's up:
Battle System:
I'm am torn. I want a
Tales
-style battle system, but I need one pre-made. I can only do basic scripting for RMXP, and I would never be able to construct a battle system by myself. So, I am currently trying to decide between a few pre-made systems - two in particular. One of them runs very smoothly and has no bugs or errors. The problem? It's more of a
Final Fantasy
system than a
Tales
one. Then, I have one that runs just like Tales of Phantasia, and displays like Symphonia. The problem? Though it shows excellent potential, it's extremely buggy and currently only supports one character at a time. In the world of these codes, beggars can't be choosers. Until the Tales system is completed, I'm stick with the safe one.
Menu System:
Fortunately, the Menu is going better than the battle system. I have found a script for a menu very close to that of Tales of Symphonia. Though I'm going to need to fix it up a little bit myself, I don't see any problems in the future.
Graphics:
Well, what can be said? The graphics are going fine...they're basically just all images that I've ripped from various Tales games.
So...yes, basically I am cheating. Using the works of others and putting them together to make my game...but as I said, it's just for fun, so...
@Kikujiro: Not bad...are you trying to mask an accent there?

You're not obliged to be polite you know, you can say "damn it sucks xD"^^
Anyway, I'm French. And I was not really "trying" to mask any accent, I must have done it without noticing.

From my experience, RPG Maker (of any kind) is your best bet is to steer clear of it if you want an authentic Tales, or Tales-esque battle system. RPG Maker just doesn't have the versitility in its programming to allow you to do that. It's hard enough to make any kind of custom battle system, but trying to imagine making the complex AI that the LMBS employs... well, it just hurts to think about trying to implement that with RPG Maker. Just my opinion. You could, if you really, honestly wanted a Tales-esque battle system, I would suggest downloading Dark Basic (
www.darkbasic.com
, I believe), learning a little programming language, and going from there. But the program costs money, which I doubt you want... Then, you could try a different free program. There are a few different ones here:
http://www.gamingw.net/
(they have tutorials and stuff, too, so my guess is you've already been there). But of all the programs there, RPG Maker is still the best available, in my opinion.
As for the Final Fantasy-type system... It's better than a first person battle system. At least you can see the characters in battle. I'm sure you'll work something out. ^_^ Good luck, and again, if you need some help, don't hesitate to ask.

I really don't think it's a problem. XD...
