though those can be more Engrish at times (I'm looking at Lion and the net-nerds that insist that that's the proper English spelling and continue to type it that way).

God. 'Lion' is quite possibly the worst Japan-official romanization of any playable character in the series. Ugh. (if you want to include NPCs, that award goes to ToS' Dirk, who goes by "Dike" according to the soundtrack)

Anyway, back on topic. Rimuru. (gogs, I'll reply directly to your response a little later). I did a little bit of research for possible "real world" alternatives that stray from the original katakana to various degrees. Searching several girl name sites I came up with the following:

Leonora
Lemuela
Lenore/Lennore
Linore
Linura
Remira
Riyana

Umm.. there's also Lemuel, but that's a male name D:

Also, if you try to be less true to the strict katakana pronounciation, there are are some other possibilities that I think look great.

Limura/Rimura

I still don't like any of the suggested transliterations based on the strict kana pronounciation. I like most of these slightly less failthful alts much better.

I like Limura, and who says you can't change the name to something you like better.  I will always say that Raine is 50x better than Refill.

Yeah, Refill and Genius would've been too "on the nose" in English.

Lemuela and Limura look good to me out of your suggestions, Cless. Mythologically, I really wonder if they were trying to go for something relating to Lilith, but I didn't see anything that would really point to that under Lilith's Wikipedia entry.

Yeah, some of those official name changes were certainly for the best...

I agree with Limura. Lemuela would be too hilarious for me to take seriously. XD

Quote from: Leroy
I'd have to imagine that Lilith's daughter's name would probably use L instead of R. Something like Limuru or Limule. Limule looks really good in my opinion. I've got the Tales of Destiny Character Book at home, I'll check that when I get home to see if they have an English spelling in there..
You can look up Limule and see why I didn't suggest it. I didn't see any English spelling in the book.

About Lion, you have to understand Lion Magnus keeps the pun. Great Lion. And of course, there's the part where the Japanese don't care about Engrish since they pronounce things using the kana. Hometek did a 180 to actually spell out the pun from Philis to Felice (and possibly Tone in Chelsea's name).

If you decide to stray a little from the sound, there are a ton of choices. You can have something as sophisticated as Lemieux. I just didn't suggest any of those because you can make a good looking name from the given kana without straying from the sound if you try hard enough. Whether you wanna do that is another matter, right?

Shrug. Lilith *is* an actual girl's name, but I seem to recall the offcial transliteration of her name being Lyris (also a normal girl's name..). You could get either from the katakana of her name, really. I didn't do much research, but from what I did see, Lyris doesn't seem to have any mythological connection.

I did however, (half jokingly) consider completely renaming her Morrigan, to create a horribly non-subtle Darkstalkers reference. (tomatoes...?)

Mario Lemieux!! Wink

Sometimes for stuff like this, you really need think outside the box for the less obvious possibilities. But man, I've already spent more time on her name than I'd like to have.

I rather liked Limura myself. It doesn't stray much at all, and it's gaining the popular vote...

The bon instead of pon bothers me a little, but it works.

Clamp-on was actually a result of me misreading that... bugh.

Could you post a pic of Clamp-on, Meldworm, and Flagger? I might be able to confirm those if I can see them again, but I'm away from my apt for 2 weeks.

I'm not sure I can get any screens. I can get the sprite sheets, but they're made of body fragments, and not just complete animation frames. It's not too difficult to figure them out though.

Is Aquarians intentional? Not related to protozoans in ToS, but still uses same names minus Flamis for Fenrilra iirc. ToS uses Aeros, Aquan, Arthis (screwup in US ver). Earthis would be more recognizable than Arthis and I guess Flamis spelling should go with Earthis. Cyl can correct me on these.

Ah, they're in ToS? I wasn't really aware... it's been awhile since I played it. I guess I'll use its convention and fix the earth one.

Safe search? The kana doesn't sound like door ドア though.

I don't like censorship... Wink

I wasn't really sure how to spell it, so my first instinct was to use door...

Nah, not Froze. It doesn't help they made a typo. Doubt it's intentional. Japanese tends to go with Freeze or Frozen for kana instead.

It's one of the names of Fenrir (or Fenrisulfr and Fenriswulf). Hróðvitnir or Hrodvitnir and Hrothvitnir (フローズヴィトニル) if you anglicize it.

Interesting... well, it's not the first time the team's done it. I remember the アップルシードル from ToE all too well. At least that one was a little more obvious!

Funny how you thought of referencing fighting games like that.  Maybe we should add a ru katakana after Rimuru and make a reference to Nakoruru's sister from Samurai Shodown, Rimururu.   Cheesy

Well, that may be a reason why I've been particial towards leaving it as Rimuru.  Even without that extra ru katakana, I still think Rimururu sometimes.  However, Limura/Rimura gets my vote for an alternate name if Rimuru does not pass the test.  Besides, I'm sure we're not aiming to add a ru to the name anyway.

yeah, Limle and Limura get my vote. the problem with Limle, as i see it, is you'd have to include a pronunciation guide when she's introduced, or something :/

i'd imagine it'd be pronounced "limmel", sorta, with the last "el" having sort of an "ull" sound to it?

I've skimmed over the Wikipedia entry for Lilith a few times and couldn't really find anything that could possibly be rendered from Rimuru. Even Lilin (mythologically, female demonic children born of Lilith) is really stretching it.

Oh, in regards to the Lilith/Lyris thing, it seems Namco is either contradicting itself, or had non Team-Destiny people onboard when making the URLs for the Tales of Fandom Vol.1 minisite. Even though the ToF site renders it Lyris  (as seen on this sketch page URL), the Tales of Destiny Remake site romanizes her name as Lilith in the URL for her character profile.

Since Lilith seems to be the most canonical name here (even moreso when taking into account the US localization of the original ToD), that'd be the most logical choice.

Wait, why are we discussing Lilith's name now?  It uses the same kana in Darkstalkers.  It's not our fault the people at Namco couldn't get their stuff straight.

Let's get back to what we're gonna call Rimuru.  All this Lilith and Lilin stuff is making me think of Eva, which I'd rather not do at this forum.

I'm assuming all those Owlbears at the end is filler...

Couldn't help but notice St. Elmo... that just made me laugh, then laughing made me think about how hysterical that new TMX Elmo's laughing can get and made me laugh more...

Anyway I'm fine with anything you deem to be fitting, Cless. I trust your judgement.

Interestingly enough the Owlbears are in Final Fantasy XII as well. I was really dissapointed they changed the name for the English version, though, as Owlbear is a really funny name. At any rate they changed it to Urstrix in the English version. Don't know if that establishes any tradition, but I imagine it might be a reference to this game, as the Urstrix are a new enemy to FFXII.

I'll just give the bestiary info from the game to close up this post.

"Being the progeny of wildfowl taken into the magicite mines to acertain the presence of noxious fumes. On occasion of a mining accident, these birds would be exposed to great quantities of Mist, under which the influence of they would at lenght give birth to chicks with stuntet wings of most peculiar shape. Perplexed, the hens discarded their unwanted, flightless brood, these becoming the feral Urstrix."

Don't think that really helps, but I found it interesting enough to make a post about it. I'm partial to Owlbear anyway, although, I must admit, Urstrix is a better name.

Yea, owlbears have a fair stake in general fantasy lore...

I was never fully convinced about Lyris; it only works if you pronounce it as lee-ris instead of lie-ris. It's arguable since you have words like Lyre and Lyric. Such is the problem with English.

Lilu is even closer than Lilim, I guess. Logically, the first thing one thinks of is Lilith's children's names. But iirc, none of her children are close to Rimuru.

Cool, anything resembling the sprites is better than nothing, thanks.

Sometimes for stuff like this, you really need think outside the box for the less obvious possibilities.
Right, this isn't something I contest against. I'm ok with Limura, but I'll say this: I consider Leisen a good kind of thinking outside the box, Limura imo is more on the side of "I justify it 'cause I like it as a compromise." This obviously sounds like making mountains out of molehills on a stupid name, but on the general scope of a translation, the names/terms you use is what people will know it as (hence thousands of people going around now saying Torent Forest). And you're perfectionistic (to which I exalt since I'm the same; it's just more annoying when I question something and I'm just a contributor Wink), so that's my two cents.

All righty. Palettes may or may not be accurate-- the sprite files can contain up to four or even more. I chose the first one in the file.

クラムボン

メルドウォーム

フラッガー
Interestingly, this is actually different looking to what I saw before. I was probably looking at the wrong sprite file when trying to figure him out before, but regardless, it doesn't help.

EDIT: it seems very possible that フラッガー could be "Flogger" (didn't think of this one before)
