Bright implies light.. which seems to match the description.

Blight implies decaying.

Well, first, I think Excite is just making stuff up.  I think it's closer to: 'The Spirit of Light is Summoned, an incredible number of light bullets are fired, after which an explosive light attack bursts forth from the ground.'

Between Soul Bright/Blight, I would have to say I prefer Soul Blight, but I think I would actually have to see the attack or at least a shot of the Spirit to say for sure that it actually worked...

Ugh. I just had another idea.

Dark Summon could be Luna Shade.
Light Summon could start with Sol.

Luna/Sol... the names of the moon and the sun (though Luna could of course be a reference to the spirit Luna).

Sol Blight?

I like Sol Blight.  It makes more sense than Soul Blight really.

地面で強力な爆発を起こす火炎弾を降らせる<LINE>
中級晶術<END>
Raises a powerful explosion from the ground and fires a blazing shot.
Mid Level Technique.

Can't seem to wrap my head around this one for some reason... maybe I need to watch it before I try to edit...

EDIT: The effect is a fireball falling from the sky, causing an explosion on impact.

EDIT 2: Description I came up with:

MID: Blazing shots from the sky produce a<LINE>
powerful explosion on impact.<END>

連続的に水流を地面に叩きつける中級晶術<END>
A pillar of water bursts from the ground, continually striking. Mid Level Technique.

The effect of this spell is more like a waterfall... the water comes from above and drops on the enemy. I don't know how much of a stretch this is but I put it down as this:

MID: A powerful current of water from above<LINE>
slams into the ground.<END>

For the first one, it's like 'A powerful shot descends from above to raise a blazing impact.'  I think what you said sounds better and it gets the whole message across, so stick with that.

For the second one, you're right, I didn't read one of the words close enough.  Actually, what you said is very close to what it says.  The one part that's missing is that it says something about consecutive strikes.  But that's not really essential.

I'll see about working more on some of this later if I have a chance.

ah, right. I'll mod the second one into a plural.

MID: Powerful currents of water from above<LINE>
slam into the ground.<END>

hmm.. I'm gonna forgo Abyss' "novice" spell tier and just use "low", primarily for space saving reasons.

Are you planning on marking the Extensions somehow?  I didn't know if you had enough space or not.

It seems that I completely missed the point of the light summon, ソルブライト, when attempting to 'localize' it.

After reading a description of it from a Japanese Wiki, gogs and I have theorized the name could be a pun. Sol/Soul and Bright/Blight. The wiki description is:

光の精霊を召喚、凄まじい量の光弾を放った後、地面から光を爆発させて攻撃する。

Engrish Excite translation:

Light is exploded from ground after the spirits of the dead of light is summoned, and terrific amount of Hicatama is shot and it attacks it.

actually, that's just excite screwing up. i agree with throughhim's translation. there are no spirits of the dead; it's just saying that the seirei (精霊; those spirits from ToP) of light is summoned. it should probably be Sol Bright, as there is nothing in the description or spell effect that indicates anything sinister (blight), nor anything having to do with souls.

LOW-Ext: Three strands of light release a<LINE>
destructive burst of energy.<END>

...etc. btw I wasn't really sure how to mark the description for crazy comet though...

FORBIDDEN: Summon a raging comet from the<LINE>
depths of space. Odd TP use and chant time.<END>

(it's hard to word this without raping it because of the space contraints...)

Hm... for Crazy Comet, you probably don't need the second sentence.  It is in the description, but you could leave it out.  I mean, the player can read how much TP it takes in another place and the cast time is kind of implied by the spell.  As for the Forbidden part, I remember that Genius' Meteor Storm in Tales of Symphonia was marked as Mystic High, so you could use that if you wanted.  Though it's not quite the same.

I wonder if you actually see the Crazy Comet description in the game through normal means. Usually hiougis and things are not visible in the menus without hacking... I've never finished this game so I wouldn't know... but then again it's the only one that does have a description...

crazy comet is a normal move, afaik. like, you can set it to the d-pad and all. the other three moves after crazy comet are extensions.

the extension spells can be cast directly sometimes, i think. like, kyle ends up getting vortex heat despite it normally being an extension spell.

Quote
三連の光弾から滅殺の稲妻を放つ下級昇華晶術<END>
Three strands of light release a destructive burst of energy. Low Level Sublimation Technique.

"The three bursts of light release..."

the low level extension spells follow from the low level normal spells. like, the first spell effect leads to the second. so, they should probably be read together as one unit when translating them. same goes for the mid level spells -> mid level extension spells.

one other thing... in case you didn't figure it out already, these files are generally meant to be read from the bottom up. i'm not really sure why it's like that, but it seems fairly common (at least for tales games, anyway).

Eh, I'm not quite sure where everything is going and what naming conventions you guys have decided on (this is kind of organized wierdly), but uh..

Prism Flasher is different from Prism Sword, so you can't exactly just go making it Prism Sword too =P. Alot of people already know that ToD2 uses an entirely new spellset (Save for..Heal and..Raise Dead?...and Resurrection?) that has new names, even if they clone the original moves. It'd be wrong to give them the names of the older moves.

I know you want to go for as professional and presentational an effort as you can with the spell names, but merging Prism Sword and Prism Flasher into one seems wrong, IMO.

Prism Flasher ToD2j has been a long stream lights crashing down from the sky. Horizontally in a sort of way to make you try to dodge them. These weren't so heavily colored since they're so bright, IIRC.

Prism Sword in ToE was..well, okay, it closely resembled that >_>;. Only that they looked like actual swords, were sword of rainbow-y colored, and hit the entire field, IIRC. ND3 was wierd in that it basicaly made these colored swords fall down for Prism Flasher, but the beginning was cut (all of the swords popping up and then falling down).

Prism Sword in ToS was totally a Holy Lance clone in terms of looks. Field surrounds enemy, swords crash in. End Move.

Prism Sword in ToTA actually looked like a prism, locked an enemy in totally brutally injured them with hits while they're incase, and ended with a pretty sword landing in the middle to break it all.

While the spells in ToD2j and ..the regular Tales games do share alot of similarities, there are minor differences that set them apart in terms of use and how the player would react. Keeping in mind that the end IS Flasher for ToD2, and since then the name has remained Sword. There's a different in the source name and the way the magic is executed.

Prism Flasher and Sword is sort of muddy to mess with. Let's try.. Wind Slash!

Okay, Wind Slash, totally resembles Wind Cutter. Difference between them? Wind Cutter scores more hits, a variable depending on the game really, Wind Slash scores two. =P

I don't mind hyper analyzing and stuff, but merging names between ToD2's spellset and traditional Tales stuff seems wrong, even if they try to clone them, they're still rather seperate. And I know it'd make your life easier..but ..I'll just repeat my point on and on here, I'll just stop.

But yeah, if you don't mind. I'd like to take a shot at this? I just don't know what kind of limits we're working with here as far as how engrish you'd want to go, character limit, how far from the source material you want to go. I realize ToD2 has alot of funky spell names, and I hate them so dearly, but --okay okay stopping now XD

Okay, in short, ToD2 is one of my least favorite Tales games, but I'm a huge Tales spell whore, I'd like to lend a hand, how's it sound? >_>;

The only thing that's retconned is Prism Flasher...

If you have some ideas, speak up, that's what this thread is for. Tongue

Hell if you want, I could just call it Prism Blades or something just to keep it different.
